The first about a minute & a half is one of the greatest album intros ever. This whole song is brilliant but that first minute is mind-blowing.

In a "normal" man of letters - typically in Goethe - we find that as age advances there is a tendency for technique to outweigh inspiration; that what was to begin with mainly intuitive has been transformed into the deliberate mastery of a craft. In Hölderlin's poems, on the other hand, we note a steady increase in the inspirational, the daimonic element, in the improvisations of genius; whereas the intellectual, the purposefully artistic element passes more and more into the background and ultimately disappears... Songs of the Night, these fragmentary clairvoyant inspirations, no longer derive from the carefully tilled and well-lighted precinct of earthly art, from a region that has been measured and plotted. They are not sedulously wrought in the workshop of the mind, but are shapeless masses of meteoric metal, fallen to earth out of the invisible heaven of inspiration, and bearing with them the magic of their extraterrestrial origin.
      - Stefan Zweig
      (STRUGGLE WITH THE DAEMON:
      Nietzsche, Hölderlin, and Kleist)

Andy Partridge grew as a composer with every album. By this time, when fewer were paying attention, his genius was reaching its zenith. His gifts to music lovers will live and grow, unless the scarecrow people blow it all away.

too bad he can't sing, he should have found a great singer. Just imagine Pete Townshend singing all The Who songs, without a Roger Daltrey, they would never have been as big

@@westerling8436that's an insane take, hopefully satire. Andy Partridge's vocals have always been absolutely fantastic, they didn't seek out selling out arenas like The Police, other British rock bands did. That's why they never became huge.

Still boggled XTC never eventually broke large, strange world. Two of the modern eras greatest songsmiths, both wildly gifted, wasn't enough to push them through. Colin and Andy are largely unknown to the masses and they should have been household names! The unexpected intro here never ceases to amaze me.

Virgin Records treated them very poorly, and also Andy decided to pull the band out of a tour with The Police that would likely have made them a household name in America. They saw too many hard knocks :( but their legacy will live on through those of us who truly appreciate their musical genius.

I mean this song is kind of like the inverse of Nothing but Flowers. This song the narrator wants nature to take over: "I want to see a river of orchids where we had a motorway." Whereas Nothing but Flowers the narrator misses the comfortable luxuries of the industrialized world: "If this is paradise, I wish I had a lawn mower!" But yeah I can see why you would be reminded of them they both evoke similar imagery lyrically speaking.
