“He’s been awfully good to me, you know”. Jesus has been awfully good to me. I have not known “real” suffering in my life. UPS and down yes, but not suffering. Jesus has taken care of me. I do not know why, but am grateful beyond measure. Mabel’s story chokes me up every time ❤
John this is my favorite episode of ALL TIME. Mabel’s story has impacted my life ever since you first shared her and I have passed her story onto so many friends. Her perspective, her closeness to Jesus. I can’t wait to meet her in heaven. I’m forever grateful you shared her with us. ❤
Wow. My mother had some serious medical issues near the end of her life, but nothing as bad as Mabel's afflictions. She read the Bible daily and spoke of her savior, Jesus, as a friend. I was reading the Bible to her when she passed away. While our hearts are made heavy hearing about Mabel's condition, they are lifted up to hear how much she loved Jesus. Double wow. John, thank you so much for sharing Mabel's story. We are blessed for hearing it.
“My Jesus.” I read the story of the rich ruler in Luke 18:18ff, this morning. We are, most of us, and surely me, the rich. It’s not about heaven when I die, it’s about being able to fully live in the Kingdom of heaven now. I am rich with things to do, books to read, movies to watch, podcasts to hear, so many things that distract me from “my Jesus” that Mabel knew.
Wow ❤ "I think about Jesus" what a beautiful soul she must be - a treasure that was hidden on this earth for awhile. So glad the kingdom is available to us all. ❤ Glad too that we are taking time in this series to absorb and to do.
"Thank you, it's lovely, but can I give it to someone else?" Thank you John, this may have been my very favorite episode of all the ones you've done. ❤
"When I am sad, He makes me glad He is my friend." He picked me up out of the ditch of depression, set my feet on solid ground, and holds me tight every day.
I was fortunate enough to be able to work with people with developmental disabilities for my 35 year career. Like Mabel some were trapped in bodies that could think but their families didn’t come around. Those that were considered severely or profoundly mentally disabled were the most wonderful, sweet people I’ve ever known. God blessed me. 🙏🏻
I thank God I can see, I can walk, and I can go wherever I want to. My life may have hardships, but as long as I have Jesus it doesn't matter so much anymore. Thanks, John, for reminding me about Mabel. I won't forget her again.
Thank You Jesus for Mabel’s life and her lasting testimony🙌✝️ Her peace and joy in her agonizing and difficult life…and how she knew and experienced Jesus’ love and presence through it.
I have heard John tell the story of Mabel in the past and, each time, it humbles me and reframes my perspective of my challenges. Blessed are the Mabels of our world, living in the kingdom of God here on earth. A wonderful reminder of what is truly insurmountable. Thank you!
“He’s been so good to me.” There’s a song I listen to every night after night prayers called, “My Soul Sings,” and one of the lines is “He’s been so good to me,” and I just could cry with emotion every night.
"I'm one of those kind who's mostly satisfied" - I wish that was true for me. I'm working on it, and keep a gratitude journal where I try to write 3 things a day. But my default is often dissatisfaction and complaining.
Mabel held out the flower and said, 'Here, this is from Jesus. "I have felt the same feeling when ever I was asked to assist in communion. I would say, take and eat, this is His body broken for you or take and drink, this is His blood shed for you. Most of the times I was holding back tears of love and joy."

Thank you for your honesty.❤
Not a quote but an observation of how deeply Jesus was ingrained in her. Scripture, words of hymns. So appreciate hearing this story.

I loved hearing about Mabel and how God can take any human anywhere he wants to take us, in His mercy. She lived in Him, in His presence. Just wow.

Thank you, I just revisited this ❤

My favorite. Wow Mabel. That I would remember this whenever, in my life of plenty I think to complain.
I always remember that story from your days at Willow Creek. Still powerful!

Beautiful story.

So encouraging 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
I am a hospice chaplain and visit with my own Mabel's on a weekly basis. Is there a way I can get a copy of Mabel's story to share with my team?
Such a wonderful story. We should all depend on Jesus as she did. Thanks for sharing

Can you give the titleof the book where Mabel’s story is found, please?
It is called "Trying to Be Good" by Tom Schmidt, but it is long out of print. You can find it in John's book: "The Life You've Always Wanted"
Thanks so much. Found a copy on ebay.
