    You are an amazing human being. Some people are not, most mean well but unfortunately some have no empathy, they are handicapped by nature or nurture.

    Thank you for sharing your story. Those were some awful injuries you came out of that accident with. I have a lifelong illness and chronic pain and I am totally in the same camp as you, not wanting sympathy but wanting understanding. I think the disability rep in books is gradually getting better, especially in children's books. I'll be checking out those books you've recommended for sure. Sending love ❤

    Emily this is a beautiful video and I so much appreciate you talking about your experience. As you know I share the wish to see more characters in fiction that represent the proportion of disabled people in real life and the diversity of disability, including invisible disabilities. It sometimes feels like non-disabled authors only know about autism and then get that wrong. In many ways what I dream of is disabled characters just appearing naturally in the mix rather than being a plot point if you know what I mean. More work published by disabled authors will contribute to that of course. Looking forward to good recommendations over the year.

    • @novellenovels
      @novellenovels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree with you that disabled people need to be just part of stories rather than plot point so that the disability is mentioned but not focused on. I love that we share the same opinions on this 😊

    My daughter has invisible illnesses. She was diagnosed bipolar in her junior year of college. Then at twenty five, after giving birth to her daughter, she was diagnosed with lupus. She is now 42, and still coping, as she always will. It is a part of all of our lives, as your friends and family share your disabilities. Thank your for sharing your story with us. So happy to have found your channel. We don’t really read many of the same books, but I love your enthusiasm for reading.

    Just found your channel. Thank you for sharing. I had one leg amputated last year due to cancer and then I discovered I had colorectal cancer and ended up with a colostomy bag. I am 75 years old and it has been a challenge for me but it hasn’t kept me down. I am in a wheelchair but have learned how to do things in spite of the wheelchair. I converted my dining room into a small cafe by putting in credenzas at my height. I can cook, fix coffee, use the microwave and even make ice. I will prevail and not let my disability define me.

    Thank you for sharing your story, you are truly amazing. It really resonated with me. Your positivity and determination are very similar to my father-in-law who was also in a motor vehicle accident. He had a 5% chance of survival, but we never underestimated his strength. It is amazing what the human body is capable of, and how the brain can heal from traumatic injury. I look forward to your book recommendations so I can better understand the unspoken struggles he still faces daily. Thanks. xo

    Thank you for sharing your story. Oh my goodness the accident sounds awful and those injuries must have been so painful and a difficult thing to process and recover from. I am glad you were able to recover a lot of the mobility in your hand. And wow, it must be hard with balance for sure with the combination of your disabilities. My sister works in Barts hospital! I am glad you're family were supportive and there for you as well. Sometimes talking to a camera can be so soothing. I loved a curse so dark and lonely as you know. I have read a quiet kind of thunder and I really enjoyed that one too. I hope you will love all of the disability books on your tbr.

    It’s funny how that good ear can catch the things you’re not meant to hear, isn’t it! I’m partially deaf and blind on my left side as well. I totally get the poor self-image thing. It took me a long time to start a BookTube channel because I didn’t want to show my face to the world. Good for you for overcoming that self-consciousness in that area! It’s so hard! Thank you for all the recommendations! You probably saw this already, but The Brave is the group read for Middle Grade March this year.

    I knew some of these things from a previous video you filmed about this. Big hugs. I can imagine it can scare you when people come up to you from the side of your ear that you're deaf in. I love that your mum and your sisters were there for you. I am happy you were able to have that procedure. It makes sense you work part-time, with also being a mum and with your disabilities. Oh yes I know about sensory overload.. :(. Big hug 💖. Ugh for people bullying you! I was bullied too. I'm glad you have supportive friends on BookTube and also your family to support you. You deserve all the love. Awww Chris! That is so nice. I ordered One Thousand Stars and You this morning (I was ordering a couple of other things and decided to add it to that :P). I bought A Curse So Dark and Lonely because of your review, I have it on my general TBR. I love the cover of The Brave, let me know what you think when you have finished it :). I loved A Quiet Kind of Thunder. I am excited for Get a Life, Chloe Brown! Yes, we need more books with disabilities! Totally agreed! Talk to the disabled person themselves, and ask what you can do, don't just do something for them assuming that is what the person needs or whats. My partner is very supportive of me too, and I am of him too (he has ME, imsomnia, and mobility issues). I'm sending you lots of hugs, love and support. xxxx

    I stumbled across your channel via this video and just wanted to say thank you for sharing your story so candidly. Books with disability rep that I’ve read and would recommend: Rosie Loves Jack by Mel Darbon and I’m currently reading The Bride Test by Helen Hoang which is fantastic. If you like manga, I Hear the Sunspot has a partially deaf main character. It’s also a very sweet story - I really liked it. I’ve not read it but I’ve heard great things about A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll. Hope you find lots of great books with disability rep! ❤️
