Amazing teacher and I feel like I’m actually in a machining class. Thank you for taking the time to document and share your knowledge with the world. It is truly appreciated.

Thank you for remembering us the importance of benchwork and how to use properly the basic hand tools. I enjoyed every minute of the video! Looking forward for the other parts of this series.
    Thanks again Marc.
    Cheers
    Jimmy

Hi Jimmy, thanks for the comment, thanks for watching and thanks for producing your videos. I really enjoy watching you work, and I find that your videos are a great example of how attention to detail is important. I hope to have part two ready next week. Have fun and be safe! Marc L'Ecuyer

Covering the basics is good; knowing a subject to the very bottom very good. You are casting light in all the corners. Love it.

    Marc,
Thank you for another interesting lesson in basic machining. Yes, George Carlin was a great comedian. Of course, his TV appearances were "cleaned up" but his live shows were great! He was one of a kind! As I have mentioned before, I really enjoy what I am learning and the way it presented. You have a great teaching style. It's light and fun. It's not dry, like reading the Machinist's Handbook as you would read a novel. Thanks again! Good luck with your tooth. I know dentistry is a noble profession, but I hate them all the same! I don't like guys putting pointy things in my mouth!
    Have a good one!
    Dave

Good video! I did go back to the second 1-2-3 block video to watch the stamping. I have to ask how you aligned the numbers so beautifully. I've several videos on that go into some detail to make them straight but I still get a stray letter or number in practically everything I stamp.
    Thanks for the great videos.

Hey Marc, trying to find a chisel point punch, cannot find anything by that name, Even looked on the Starrett web site, Could by chance they go by another name? Thanks

FYI, around 31 minutes you refer to links in other videos. Those links are not appearing in TH-cam at least not in Chrome on a Mac.
    Thanks again for your videos!!!

    "Master" L´Ecuyer,
I love your videos. I´m a novice hobbyist machinist.
I don´t know if I can make a question on the commentaries, but will soon find out.
I want to cut a 1/4" thick PVC disk using the faceplate with the double sided tape technic with a live center pressing it firmly.
It would have an OD of 255 mm, with a 3 mm wide by 3 mm deep groove on the 247-250 mm ID. It will be a cover for a home made telescope. I´d like not to drill the center, making it a plain cover.
Biggest problem I think I may be getting is that my faceplate is 230 mm wide. Thus, both my outside diameter cut and the groove cut are on the unsupported piece of material (12.5mm).
Yesterday I´ve tried it out, hopping that the PVC would be easy as butter with a hot knife to cut. It wasn´t. I had not completed the task, but have also not yet ruined the materials.
Sometimes the material slipped and I placed a large centered block on the live center tip to apply pressure on a larger area.
In the end, I´ve started grinding a trepanning tool bit, but haven´t finished it yet.
Will the overhanging 12.5mm of material be too flexible to get any chance of a decent cut? Do you have any master´s tip for me to complete this job?
    Thanks!

+Marcelo Iannini Hi Marcello! The PVC should be rigid enough to take the 12,5 mm overhang for a 1/4" thick part. I am guessing that cutting angles, speeds, feeds and how you are holding the part is could be the problem. For tool angles on the lathe I will suggest you watch this video, th-cam.com/video/94eIsPY_yWw/w-d-xo.html . For speeds, feeds and tool geometry I suggest these two videos, th-cam.com/video/y4gDDq_55Is/w-d-xo.html , th-cam.com/video/yN2bUUGYV6A/w-d-xo.html For plastics and how they act I suggest this video, th-cam.com/video/Qa7O004cZH0/w-d-xo.html . As for holding the part, I would suggest that you send me some pictures of your setup so that I may better understand and I could then make better suggestions (YOU CAN'T ANNEXE THINGS TO COMMENTS). Your cutting speed should be around 300 SF/M so your RPM for a 255mm part should be around 120 RPM (slow down the speed to 50 RPM for the grooving but maintain the feed 9 ( the feed is in distance per rev so it stays the same but the tool will move slower), I suggest a neutral cutting face placed on or just below center height of your part, your tool should have a small tool nose radius and you should be using a slow feed (.004"/rev). I would also limit my depth of cut to no more than .015". If you want to, you can send the pictures to THATLAZYMACHINIST@GMAIL.COM and remember that you will find links to all my videos on machining for beginners (75 in all plus some jokes in Canada's both official languages ) on my free website THATLAZYMACHINIST.COM .I hope this helps, Marc L'Ecuyer

Hi Marc, what type of steel is this chisel you use for cutting metal?
What should be the best, if this one is not?
Thanks for the videos and instructions.

    • @THATLAZYMACHINIST
      @THATLAZYMACHINIST  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Fabrisio! A good grade of alloy medium carbon steel is what I would recommend, 4140 or the like with a light temper (brown). If however you choose tool steel, make certain that you use a very complete temper (lite blue or dull silver). The chisels must be hard but the must also be very shock resistant to avoid fracturing and flaking. Always wear safety glasses when using chisels. I hope this helps, Marc

Yes it does thank you. I was glad when i heard you saying (another video maybe) that you still have 10 fingers and 2 eyes, and that is what you think in order to always be safe, I do think like that as well.
