how often do we run from God when we sin and not to Him, this today was a huge reminder for me, that no matter how ashamed I feel, and want to hide in a hole, I can and must run to God, in my times of sin, how utterly awesome is God that He is just and loving when we repent🌸

How on earth can David be “a man after God’s own heart”? 2 Sam 11 is right up there with the horrid Judges 21 in terms of sad, awful things to read. But God-but God accepts David’s repentance. Ps 51 shows David’s remorse, how he begs God for a clean heart and a renewed spirit. He’s a man after God’s heart because he repents and God forgives! How many times has God forgiven my sins and accepted my repentance? How many times has He shown His mercy through the forgiveness of my wife? How kind, how merciful, how gracious, how forgiving is the Father’s love for a sinner like me. It’s repentance that makes me a “man after God’s own heart.”

I wonder why David didn't name the child of Bathsheba ... David was forgiven but his act of adultery and murder had consequences for him and his family. Just like Moses wouldn't be allowed to enter the promised land because of his disobedience.
How many wives did David have? I heard that Solomon wrote Proverbs and wrote passages for his mother, Bathsheba. Do we ever hear about Bathsheba after the birth of Solomon? Bathsheba was a victim but God comforted her and didn't have any consequences for her, David caused her grief by losing her child. My 2nd time through and I picked up more things about God's graciousness.

As someone named Bathsheba, whenever i introduced myself in the past, people always say 'oh, the woman that tempted King David'. Basically victim-shaming my namesake. I always try to defend her by pointing out the facts in the story. I even considered changing my name at some point due to some of the negative comments i have heard.
I am glad though, that it was pointed out in the Bible that God held David responsible, not Bathsheba, for all that happened in this story even though she too suffered the consequence(losing her baby) as well as his whole family. When we sin, the consequence(s) doesn't just affect us(the sinner) but our loved ones too.
Bathsheba means 'child of oath' and i now bear the name with pride knowing that i am a child of God's oath with His children. The uniqueness of my name has opened many doors for me😊

Don't we all make excuses for our actions that are less than stellar? We do something thinking we are owed it, and yet, God knows everything we do. We can have such vile hearts, be so self centred and full of ourselves.
But God is so merciful toward us. We don't deserve Him, His love, His grace, His mercy. And yet God freely gives it to us. It's ours for the taking.
Lord God, forgive me of my sins. Please change my heart to be like Yours. Change my behaviour, my thinking, my soul. In Jesus Name, Amen. ❤

"Repentance is marked by worship, it serves as evidence of a changed heart!"
TLCs God-shot was mine too, "if it had been too little, I also would have given you much more". God is our Father because He gave us His Son, His most precious and only Son, this alone shows how generous God is and can be. I've learnt to ask for things from God whether it seems silly or not, rather than coveting it. This just drew my attention to not stop asking for more because it's my Father's good will to provide for His beloved always, even in inconvenient times.

This may not be a result of reading all these things today, but I’d like to add that despite our sins, God still waits for us. Personally I’ve been struggling with faith this year. But something changed. I no longer see just words. I believe these words. Everything the Bible tells us is truth. So if there is anyone who is struggling like I was, be patient and keep reading. God knows your heart, and He’s waiting for you at just the right time.❤

God is merciful to all people when we ask for mercy and put our trust in Him. In scripture, David is one of many who does bad things. Moses killed an Egyptian and ran. Paul (Saul), looked for and killed early Christian’s. Yet, God called them and used them all for His good and the good of His people. Some stories in scripture are difficult to read, but we are called to REMEMBER God. He is calling us to repentance. He is about truth. We need to self examine, We need to face our truth and realize we ALL need a Savior whom God provided. Hallelujah and praise The LORD, have been redeemed from my transgressions. I need to continue to ask for mercy and salvations for others, to LIVE.

I have realized that no matter how much I sin and break God's commands, He still loves me and will forgive me. This doesn't give me approval to sin and I should do my best not to sin, but if I slip up and do something not pleasing to God, He will not turn his back on me. The Holy Spirit will convict me so I can turn from sin, ask forgiveness and get back on the right path. Thank you Lord for this! I love you!

The Lord was displeased with what David had done- adultery and murder. He sent Nathan to rebuke David. God asked David why he despised Him and His Word. David confessed his sin and God took it away. Our sin is displeasing to God and a direct affront to Him and His Word. Yet, God shows such mercy to us when we confess and He removes our sin. What an amazing God we serve! 🙌🏽❤

Thank you so much for this clear message about David and Bathsheba. I have heard comments that she was in the wrong, to go to him and be with him. Thank you for showing us that it was David who was guilty and not her.

    • @MarkJones-mm3br
      @MarkJones-mm3br 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

She was not without guilt, though less guilty than David.
Something to consider: the law of Moses required that, if a woman was being raped in the city she cry out, otherwise she was to be considered a willing adulterer. David was also described in 1 Samuel 17:42 as good-looking. So it's possible Bathsheba was a willing participant and, in which case, God was merciful to her also, since her punishment would also have been death for adultery.
Now there is the matter of the power difference with David being the king. It is often pointed out nowadays that a power difference by itself makes it sexual assault. I'm not convinced by that in general although it can be true in specific cases. Someone might be afraid of losing a job, for example. Bathsheba may have been afraid to resist the king's wishes. However, power can also be an aphrodisiac - she may have been attracted to him because he was a powerful, and respected, king (as well as being good-looking), and the law of Moses does not give any room for excuses like that. In any sexual situation between a man and a woman there is nearly always a physical power differential and, if assault/rape is involved, there will always be fear. But the woman is still required by the law of Moses to cry out in order to be excused of adultery.
Despite all his moral flaws in this situation, I think David was an honourable enough person to have stopped if Bathsheba had said no or resisted. After all, while all his other grave sins were being listed in detail here (adultery, murder), why not include the fact that Bathsheba was an honourable woman and refused/resisted but David forced himself on her? He was no less deserving of death under the law of Moses by omitting that. It was also not a pattern of behaviour and his conscience was highly troubled after his sin was pointed out by Nathan.
The fact is, we don't really know for sure what the dynamic was in this particular situation between David and Bathsheba. However, on balance, including the later revealed obvious love between them, I think she was willing (at least in part), therefore also guilty of adultery, and therefore also shown mercy.

WOW! Loaded reading today. As King - David was to lead his armies. He would pray to God and lead the way. They were always victorious when that happened. This time David stayed home. The cascadeing effect of that decision. ☹️
I always saw what David did to Uriah as murder…. I kind of saw what happened to Bathsheba as sexual assault- never put the word “rape” to it. To look as both of these SERIOUS sins, the punishment for each was death… to see the grace of God come in and forgive him. Amazing. 💗
Some commentaries or notations suggest that it was Bathsheba who gave Solomon his name which means something like peace. This was God’s way of reaching out to her and bringing her peace. (She had been raped, her husband had been murdered, and the result of the rape - the baby dies.). She was in need of peace.🕊️

Happy Mother's Day 2024! First let me say I absolutely love you Tara-Leigh and your commentaries have become an integral part of my daily worship, but in my opinion it is wrong to indicate that David "raped" Bathsheba. The sins he committed were atrocious to be sure, but there is absolutely no indication in Scripture that he forced himself on her, or that she resisted in any way. He certainly may have taken advantage of her, but after studying the matter, I see no reason whatsoever to add sexual assault to the list of grievous sins that David committed. But though I disagree with a huge part of your commentary today, I appreciate you TLC and I look forward to tomorrow!!

This chapter makes me feel angry and ashamed of David. But also I am reminded that when I am not on my regular schedule I am more likely to get into trouble. David stayed home from war. Then he was tempted and gave in.
Uriah was not just any random foot soldier. He was one of David's mighty men mentioned in lists earlier. He also showed himself to be more honorable than David here. Yet God allows David to murder him, and all the servants in the palace are forced to be complicit in this sin as well. And even when David is punished, his baby dies, punishing the baby, himself and Bathsheba. And the curse that violence will never depart from his house also punishes his whole family for his sin, and many unrelated people as well. He deserved death for this. The prophet Nathan told him a story that made him pronounce his own sentence! Why didn't God just kill him? God's ways are certainly mysterious.

As a side note, I checked a Hebrew interlinear of 2 Samuel 11: 27, and "the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the Lord" is actually the more literal translation, English translations of the Septuagint (which is much older than the Masoretic Text) also say that. Obviously we know it was, no matter which translation is more accurate, but certainly that appears to be closer to the original than "displeased the Lord" (not to mention a much stronger condemnation.)

1 Chronicles 20 is definitely the cliff notes version of 2 Samuel 11 and 12. But it does give the added detail that David and his men defeated the Philistine giants along with the Ammonites. This horrible story is a reminder that we all sin and fall short of God's glory (Romans 3: 23). David should have been at war instead of at home. He takes a man's wife with no regard, an abuse of his power as the king. When Bathsheba sends word that she is pregnant, he tries to cover up his sins by sending for Uriah to come home in hopes that he would sleep with his wife. I'm sure David didn't count on Uriah having more integrity than he did. Instead of confessing, David does even more cover up and plots Uriah's death. What a terrible tragedy! The "man after God's own heart" had a heart that was turned away from God. It took his prophet, Nathan, exposing his sin before he repented. In His love and mercy, God forgave David, but there were still major consequences to his actions. That's my takeaway. God is just. Therefore, He must deal with sin. The mercy is that He doesn't completely destroy us if we are willing to turn back to Him, confess, and repent.
Repentance is marked with worship. It is evidence of a changed heart. Amen.

I'm ahead on the reading but I had to come back to this video. I noticed that with the story of Dinah and Tamar it used the word raped. But it didn't say that with Bathsheba. Can someone explain for me?

David sent a messenger, not solders to invite Bathsheba. And she went.
Her husband is always gone and David was a handsome King.
Your right if it was rape it would of said so. We shouldn’t put our own spin on this.

David had a kind heart to everyone, why would he force her.

Typically being summoned by the king, she probably didn’t feel she really had a choice. Maybe David thought she was agreeing when really she was fearful.

Just want to point out that the Bible never says that Bathsheba is bathing on her roof. It says that David is on the roof. She's bathing outdoors because there wasn't indoor plumbing, but we have no reason to think she was on a roof.

Great commentary. I think calling it a rape is a major stretch though. David was the ultimate celebrity at the time. He would be like The Rock today. A celebrity like that could easily use charm to get what they want even from a faithfully married woman. Let's also not forget that we have seen rape further back in the Old Testament and it was called rape in that instance. No reason to think that if rape was the case here, that it would be caused anything else. Seduction is the more realistic description of what happened here. While Bathsheba wouldn't be blameless, she would share far less of the blame. Lastly, Bathsheba lost her son, so David wasn't the only one punished here. Losing a son during that time period of history was the ultimate tragedy. Would God have punished Bathsheba with this on top of her enduring rape? Food for thought.

The notes in my study Bible say that Solomon was the fourth son of Bathsheba based on 1 Chronicles 3:5. I always thought Solomon was the second son as well. Not sure which is correct.

Great Episode! About the topic of the Giants. Here is a really interesting documentary on youtube called the unseen realm which talkes about the giants and them being killed. Very intersting. Might be cool for future episodes to be covered in or at least meantioned.
Love the reading + episodes so far! Thanks for helping me read THE FULL BIBLE for the first time :)

He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”
Later, when Bathsheba discovered that she was pregnant, she sent David a message, saying, “I’m pregnant.”
The letter instructed Joab, “Station Uriah on the front lines where the battle is fiercest. Then pull back so that he will be killed.”
When the period of mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her to the palace, and she became one of his wives. Then she gave birth to a son. But the Lord was displeased with what David had done.
    2 Samuel 11:3‭, 5, ‬15‭, ‬27
Why, then, have you despised the word of the Lord and done this horrible deed? For you have murdered Uriah the Hittite with the sword of the Ammonites and stolen his wife.
Nevertheless, because you have shown utter contempt for the word of the Lord by doing this, your child will die.”
Then David comforted Bathsheba, his wife, and slept with her. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and David named him Solomon. The Lord loved the child
    2 Samuel 12:9‭, ‬14‭, ‬24

Really fringe idea here, but I’m wondering…what if as sad as the baby’s death was, it was an act of mercy. If the baby had lived and grown up he would have had to bear the curse of being an illegitimate child as outlined in the laws of Moses so he would never be able to enter the presence of God, which was one of the curses. Not saying it was a good thing, just an idea.

Was Nathan David's son? Personally I have come to think so. Because to this point, that's the only other Nathan mentioned.
This chapter breaks my heart and makes me think of my own father. He's looked up to and is a great leader in our Christian community. But he's not perfect and some of his actions have hurt me deeply. Its stuff like this that make me feel ready to abandon david and start over. He so easily committed such a great evil!

This thing God said He would do, I wonder was this concentual with the woman? Or was it an attack on his wives? Seems like is was more horror places on his wives, someone please let me know what you think. This also disturbed me.

I love your teachings. But I think you were wrong about Uriah. You said he could have had Bathsheba put to death. That implies that he knew about this betrayal; he was not even aware of it or the pregnancy. This does not change the point of your message, but it still an important point.

Yes, IF he had found out, which he most assuredly would have, if David had not had him killed, Uriah would most likely have had her put to death because he would have known the baby could not have been his. I do not think Tara-Leigh was in any way meaning to say that Uriah DID know she was pregnant. 5:22

I disagree. I think she's more of a logical person from the way she presents herself and she has said the same thing. She has some emotion because this is an emotional chapter. Don't dismiss emotions, God gave them to us.
