I've been a historian of this beautiful game for dozens and dozens of minutes, and that first goal by BBD was textbook slapball. Rourke's was a beauty as well. Hall of Fame-quality game play. But for real, this is fun stuff. I'm looking forward to its inevitable tweaking and growth.
I love this channel. This feedback comes from a place of love, Jomboy. Game designer checking in with notes after watching two games, as if someone was submitting a prototype for our next game: * Two feet planted rule for slaps makes sense given the constraints (cement floor), but it isn't fun for people who are watching. Maybe consider additional floor options for next year. * The lack of shot clock to force action might end up hurting the game when it matters. We saw this in Slamball back in 2001 -- they had a shot clock but also had other ways to stall from a winning position and you want to avoid that. * The defenders in the crease rule has to be improved. While it's all friendly, you aren't going to see four people in the crease for most of the game, but this is the sort of thing that might ruin a championship moment. ** Suggestion: Designated Goalie + any one other defender can be in the crease. If a non-goalie touches the ball while two non-goalies are in the crease, it's a penalty shot. * There should be a whistle every time the ball bounces twice. There should be a whistle on every missed shot. These will make it clear to the players when the ball is live or not. * Clock should stop on all whistles in the final minute of each half. * Freezes are strange. I understand why they are there - it's like fouling to force a shot and change of possession. What I liked a lot: * The Warehouse vibe. Everyone in it is having a good time, seemingly. * There is clearly a skill to "setting" someone up for a slapshot. I imagine that over time you'll see schemes set up for one-timers and two-timers (like in hockey). * The variability between throwing and slapping. Different players having meaningfully-different skills. * The close-game bonus point. What I anticipate: * Teams will get much, much faster resetting after a missed shot. Someone runs to the corner, someone else runs to the ball and passes to the corner to start the play while the new-defensive team is still setting up. * Teams will improve on ball-movement and "setting" (even though it's a pass and not truly setting like in volleyball, but it has the same effect).
Excellent comment. I want to add a note about follow-throughs: I think that it should be ok if a follow-through lands in the wrong zone as long as the throw or slap happens with the player fully in the right zone
heartily agree on the whistle to know when the ball is dead and stopping the clock in the final minute. was sort of bummed that the last 10-15 seconds of this game didn't happen because the clock was still running while they were walking slowly to the corner and talking about what to do. Still looking forward to how this season plays out and the changes they make for the next one!
Right now the clock stoppages sounds good but hopefully later in the season it won't be needed. The end of this game and some other times only gets ugly because people keep playing the ball after a missed shot. With the final play it was worst case scenario because it bounced back to midcourt and then Penik chased the ball, it bounced off him and rolled to the other corner, then the ref had to go get it. If Rourke or even Jimmy was able to catch it and give it to the corner (and if Jimmy had a little more urgency getting there), there would've been around 8 seconds left when the ball was tossed in. So far we haven't seen anyone stalling with the ball in the corner which I am worried about myself but it's not an issue yet. This is a game about tempo and all those faux stoppages would ruin the pace of play. I went and looked at some film... If this game stopped after every violation under 1 minute to play in the first half, assuming 7 seconds for every proposed clock stoppage(based on a missed shot at 13:15 in the vid), the last 1:00 of the first half would've taken close to 2:10. They had 6 violations in 32 seconds which is a rate of 1 violation per 5.7 seconds. Should the game really come to a screeching halt every 5 seconds? Surprisingly, the final minute of the second half was much more calm in this regard, with only one violation happening right at the end. I already gave my thoughts on that play as the problem child. There were 3 real stoppages (1 block, 1 goal, 1 freeze) that made it actually take 2:15 but I'd much rather that extra 1:15 be looking at replays of goals or good defensive plays than just watching the guys reset. HOWEVER, I do think something needs to be done to keep players from stalling, more than just "gentleman's rules." My suggestion would be an inbound timer like in basketball. Just a mental countdown in the ref's head. Once the shot is blocked or the ball bounces twice, the team has 5 seconds to inbound the ball or it's a turnover and then the clock stops for that. The other problem with the clock stopping and starting so often is whoever is operating the clock is not paying attention, or doesn't have the game down like a lot of us. I noticed in Floorball as well, the clock would keep running when it shouldn't, or it would start 5 seconds after the play starts so that would be a lot more pressure on the clock operator who's already struggling to begin with.
I actually think changing the court could fix this issue, just by adding another box just inside the current and restricting that area to the goalkeeper only which will still leave enough space for the defenders to be in front of the offensive players if they are on the edge of the current box, but prevent the 4 goalkeeper zone defense that is annoying to watch. Seriously like the game so far tho shoutout to jomboy for innovating sports content
Rule suggestions: 1) a 45 second shot clock. You don’t want to see a championship decided by a long clock kill. 2) if there is less than 1:30 in the game and the score is within 2 points, the clock will stop for play resets till the ball is thrown back into play. This game is so fun to watch!!! Great work y’all.
I love the idea of this! The only part that doesnt feel entertaining to me is that the ball carrier has no obligations. Maybe my brain just can't adapt, but to me its very meh that the ball carrier can just freely run around doing nothing, with no restrictions nor nearly any resistance. The defence falls into a 4 man goalie routine often because they have no way of creating turnovers, so ofc they just fall back and block. All the other ball handler sports I can think of (handball, lacrosse, basketball, polo) theres all either rules the ball carrier needs to fulfill (like dribbling, steps, time limits, etc.) and/or ways the defense can create a turnover (stripping, slashing, checking, swiping, etc). The only defense this game has is blocked shots and line violations. It has the core of a great game though, and I'll keep watching! Just some honest feedback for next season!
yeah its kinda like hockey without any checking so the best strategy is to just park your whole team in front of the goal and create a wall and it doesnt lead to any entertaining gameplay. also the having to be stationery on a slap shot doesnt really feel like it should be a rule, i understand maybe you cant be sprinting but the fact that you cant move at all makes it very limiting on get slap shots to go in. I think adding a shot clock, changing up the stationery rule for slap shots to being a one step rule, and maybe switching to 2 creases (one only the goalie can be in, and then the other one would be only the defending team is allowed in) would help with the issue of the ball carrier
Maybe they turn it into a bit more of a zone thing....where each player is given a number and on defense they have a zone that they have to stay in? ....maybe lol. Maybe u have 3 zones 1 top 2 sides and a player must be in each zone area at all times. And the goalie has his area of course.
@@jonk5834 the stationary slap shot shouldnt be a thing however maybe the shooter/slapper can only move 3 or 4 steps or something prior to a shot to keep them from just immediately running down and making a juke move then slapping it in. I dunno...definitely needs tweaking somewhere
A lot of people are saying that the stoping when slapping slows the game down but a pass into a slap completely mitigates this. Like a one timer or two timer in hockey, lots of puck (ball) movement before a shot will really open up opportunities and spread the defense out. I think the rippers downfall was not pushing 3 in the offensive zone more often. Like in football, you often use the run game to open up the passing attack. If the rippers used more shot variety I think they would find more success. But that’s all what comes with the first games, everyone is still figuring it out.
I said this in the chat comments during game one, but I think people should at least wait until the season's over to start claiming what changes are needed. It's been two games. Also, guess it didn't matter but that Penik goal was DEFINITELY a crease violation right? Touching the line is over the line?
For the next version of slapball maybe you could add a slap arc to up the midrange game. Somewhere between the keeper box and zone change. Outside the arc there’s no need to bounce before the slap but inside a bounce still must be completed. It probably wouldn’t be a highly used shot, but it will be open when the opportunity comes.
That goal ryan had late in the 2nd just has to be a goal. I get the reasoning for the feet set rule but that just has to be a goal otherwise a self slap is almost impossible. Think we’re gonna need some rule adjustments. I like the new game so far though.
Yeah, I mean he had both feet on the ground and stopped his forward momentum long enough to get the shot off. Basically a "rolling stop" at a stop sign.
@@thomaskeller2947It was almost identical to the first goal that the Rippers scored. In that case I think it was Rourke that didn't have both feet planted and slapped it in and it was called good
@@nps6724Funny analogy because a rolling stop at a stop sign is also illegal and not a real stop so if you were being serious in your agreement the goal should have counted you argued against yourself.
Agree, having both feet set doesn't make any sense especially since the defense can have 4 mobile goalies. I think the last goal shouldn't have count with the foot clearly on the line, but they surprisingly did count it.
This hasn't been an issue yet, and Jimmy says if a team is being inactive the ref will call a turnover. If we see a team start stalling to keep a lead then maybe, but I think it's fine with no shot clock
@@WarehouseGames Yah that's the sort of thing you can do when it's everyone working for the same company and no one's job is on the line as a result of a win or a loss. Thinking about trying to make this real - as in something that others can play - if you don't have a shot clock as such you'll need to have some system.
I should learn not to eat when Jack Doyle talks in general. That man's little sneaky jokes have almost had me choking on multiple occasions. More "supple opportunities" 😂
@@WarehouseGamesimo it was already an issue in two of the games released so far especially jake vs jolly they just stood 4 dudes right in front of the goal the entire defensive game. Same for jimmys team really
"If the goalie is not in the crease, no player may be in the crease. However, if the goalie is present in their crease, any teammates may join him." ???
Personally, I like the rules just fine. Gym class was always my favorite and this game reminds me of something that we would have played. Jimmy is the coach that wants to play too.
the whole rolling clock vs stoppage thing needs to be figured out. This sport is awesome, but will only keep getting better as you guys refine it and see what does or doesnt work. I'm not a huge fan of the planted feet rule but having never seen the alternative I can't really say if its for the best or not. And I'm assuming you guys all tried a version without that rule as well, in order for it to exist in the first place.
I’m not a big fan of the must be planted rule it slows the game down and limits the type of highlights imagine a lob pass and someone jumps up and spikes it in
The game should reward offenses that can chain quick passes together and then slap to finish like volleyball. That's how you're going to get viral clips It's not fun watching someone standing still trying to slap a ball through four dudes parking the bus
What about a "technical" system, wherein players score movement violations for not planting before a goal? The first such goal would always count, but if a player scores X technicals they would go into the box for like 30 seconds or something. Only the first movement-violation goal would count per player. Feels like a compromise?
@@WarehouseGames I do get that to an extent. But maybe there some way around it maybe not the whole jumping thing but still allowing players to be on the move. I’m still enjoying it but I just thinking of ways to make it even better.
Seems to be some inconsistency in the “feet planted for a slap” rule, Ryan’s goal gets called off for having one foot planted + one foot midair, while D’versa’s goal (while not counting due to crease) is fine for having planted feet despite one foot being down and one foot dragging the toe? Neither one has both feet planted but would result in different calls?
The difference is D'Versas foot is actually planted. It stays there through the shot and only comes up to run back. Cohen tried to plant his foot and couldn't keep it planted because he was moving. So literally the rules as they are explained.
I get the reality that you guys can’t get too physical on the concrete, but man the lack of aggression really deflated my enjoyment. I would love to see a basketball level of contact in a game like this, in addition to removal of other rules that slow down the pace of play. Saw all the other comments from your channel in reply to similar feedback, and I do hope it improves as you guys play more, but I really think a level of engagement could improve a game like this.
26:30 it's a new sport but you will absolutely need to tighten up the rule around movement. I understand you want to reduce injury risk (cement floor) but he had exactly one foot on the ground for the entire motion of the shot.
They let people dive on the floor during blitzball to make outstanding catches, so I don't want to hear a single thing about "reduce injury risk". That goal got called back because Jimmy wanted it called back, plain and simple.
If the clock runs constantly except on freeze plays and some time can be burnt after a turnover by the new offense just being kinda slow, I think there should be stoppage time added after regulation.
I think for the sake of pacing maybe not every ball needs to be reset in the corner? It feels very much like a "your turn vs my turn" instead of just a continuous game. Maybe if it bounces twice the ball is still live but it becomes a dead ball if the offense touches it again, which may give the defense more opportunities to counter. So if the ball bounces twice on offense, the defensive team can go ahead and pick it up and play on or the offensive team can go ahead and touch it to force them to reset in the corner
Yeah, I think they should be able to throw it from anywhere on their own side of center. This game isn't nearly fast-paced enough to resemble basketball's possession style (although it could be if they forced the defenders out of the crease)
@@dfp_01 Right my example is this: the play starting at 11:52 goes over Luke's head. At that point either the ball stays alive and Dan has a chance to counter OR Luke runs over to touch the ball and force the reset to avoid a possible counter
Just my opinions on the rules after watching the first two games: 1. No player other than a team’s designated keeper should be allowed in their crease. 2. The whole “two set feet when slapping” feels like it just takes away from the fast paced play. 3. As long as a throw is released while a player has a point of contact behind the center line, and they haven’t stepped over before releasing, the follow-through shouldn’t matter. 4. I don’t know if there’s a shot clock, but there needs to be one. 5. A throw shouldn’t be an instant turnover. The back wall being a turnover makes sense, but if the goalie just blocks it, or it hits the post, it should be live. Overall, it’s entertaining, but some of the rules feel very out of place. EDIT: I am sure that many, if not all of these things were considered at some point, and there were probably legit reasons, based on game testing, safety, feasibility, etc, behind each decision. These are just my initial reactions and thoughts to the first two games.
One point guard constantly moving, two wings to set picks and post up on the crease corners for “one timer slaps” and the 4th in to be an extra pass or slip back to throw is how you score a lot in this. You gotta be able to run and spread the defense out
I think this has the potential to be right up there as the best Warehouse game but I hate that players have to be still when slapping. The beauty of the game should evolve with movement and coordination, similar to volleyball. Right now, the stationary rule makes it so that offensive plays are slow and easily beat by parking the bus or congesting the goal. Cohen's disallowed goal being against the rules just turns what should be a high octane game into a slog where it feels like most teams are just trying to throw hard into blobs of people in the crease.
Idk jimmy kinda rubs me the wrong way when he calls out Ryan for not stopping but not Luke when he jumps in front of the pass in the neutral zone, but other wise great game.
Not sure if y'all tested this or anything but it might be kind of neat if on a throw shot the goalie making a clean catch kept the ball live. it could allow for a quick countershot if the other team is aligned properly or a fast pass to a teammate that was covering someone in the throwing zone. Just a thought tho
I think slap ball has a lot of potential. Hopefully some of the confusion clears up on the rules as the season progresses, definitely not fun watching Jimmy try to enforce while also playing. I think at some point he claimed "stop and go", what is that?? Overall, it's still enjoyable and I will 100% be tuning in. I think the best implementations would be some sort of ball carrier restrictions and loosen up on the line violation rules (planted foot position upon release rather than evaluating full follow through).
Everyone staying in the goal crease on defense, having to become completely stationary before self-slap shots, and the lack of a shot clock are the main issues I see. Too many times did someone drive up to the goal crease only to stop and do nothing because 3 bodies were in the way of the goal. And too many times did a single offensive drive just become stale and slow down after no immediate results were had. I think either remove the rules requiring players to stop before slap shots, or limit the amount of players allowed in the crease to maybe 2. Team strategy and individual skill will develop right alongside the change of rules, and putting intentional pressure on players with a shot-clock should force teams to actually develop planned strategies. Loving the development of new sports, the experimentation, and the constant effort from everyone in the warehouse. Keep it up!
For the next time this is played, maybe add some goal-line cams like hockey? Either directly above the net or something from the side profile? May help the replay side of goal/no goal calls. Loving this though. Really captivating so far, and it looks like it’s efficient to film and edit
I don’t know, this game needs a massive overhaul, if it’s not fatally flawed. The turnover rules are brutal. They kill rebound play, which feels like what this game is begging for. The one and done offense rule means there can’t be a sustained offensive push, and thus means there’s no tension as a viewer. There are no moments of watching the offense pushing and hoping for a goal, or begging the defense to get control. An attack is made, and the push is over. It means that goals lack excitement too. There isn’t a rising pressure of excitement or stress over chances, the goal just sort of happens, and then we’re immediately back to the nothing of before. The ball carrier not being able to be challenged makes the running plays into and around the zone boring. If you can’t score on the move, and defenders can’t interact with the running player in a way that can earn them possession, you’re just waiting for the runner to stop so something can happen. Cool things occasionally happen, like those big blocks from Dan, but the rest is a sea of nothing
I really don't understand the rebounds thing lol, like I'm sorry but maybe the game just isn't right for the warehouse if the one thing to make it exciting makes it too dangerous?
Been reading through a ton of comments and replies from many people and even Jomboy Media…the game has potential but unfortunately it is not in a state where it can be played competitively rn in the warehouse, there way to many things that need working and if there are so many safety issues still that your concerned with then it’s gotta go back to drawing board. You played floor ball in this same warehouse and are concerned about players trying to get a ball when it’s live so when it’s thrown it’s a turnover? There’s to much of that. And the constant resets to the corner kills so much momentum and energy in the game, if it’s a turnover just have the other team grab it and start right where it’s at, the 4 men in crease is also not fun at all, in handball u get 1 goalie that’s it, and this is what the game mainly came from use rules from that as a start point and go from there and expand it to become the game u wish to see it as. 6 months in the making and it’s quite underwhelming after the first 2 games
Something I learned playing soccer. The best way to score on a goalie is if you bounce the ball right in front of them because they can never figure out where it goes after a bounce in time to react. The Breakdowns' second goal is a great example.
I'm not sure how I feel about the 'shot on goal' rule, where it immediately goes to the other team. Maybe the ball changes possession only if it touches the back wall? Could be really fun to have the ball be live after every shot. Don't know if there is a way to exploit that that they found during testing.
Rebounds are dangerous. Players colliding to grab the ball. That’s why it’s dead after 1 bounce on a slap. We want it to be a slower passion to possession game with set plays and strategy. So a throw is valuable. Can’t just be chucking it all the time bc if you miss you lose that possession
Was just thinking this. Ik it could get a bit dangerous but every time there's a block and the ball pops up, I get excited about who's going to get it only for the whistle to blow, just feels counter intuitive atm
@@WarehouseGames I wonder if the clock should stop after a dead pass, seems like it should but doesn't. (or maybe it should stop within 2 minutes or something left). Maybe just a shot clock would be nice!
@@WarehouseGames wasn’t feeling this game at all, but the various replies you’ve left on the comment of this video have given me a greater understanding of the ethos in which the game is meant to be played. I watched the game with replies in mind and have enjoyed it way more!
few issues here: 1) needs a shot clock 2) feet should be able to move on a slap. The game is dull without it and no one can create a shot standing still 3) you should not be allowed to have everyone on defense inside the box 4) the ball shouldn't go dead so often
I think the feet being still is a decent rule. That way you can’t just get a full running start. Teams haven’t fully realized a nice lob pass over the D for a slap. There have been a few plays like that but no team has fully grasp that idea yet
1.) There's too many resets in the corner. I think maybe a double bounce should just be a turnover at the spot of the bounce. 2.) the second Ryan goal where he "didn't stop" was kinda meh. i think that stutter step should have counted as the stop and the follow through as long as it's not in the crease is fine 3.) I think only 2 defenders should be allowed in the crease at the same time. there's nothing stopping a team in the lead from just building a brick will in front of the goal. But I love it! I'm very entertained and the commentary is always always A+. Thanks guys!
Fun game, wish there was a smaller goalie crease (along with the defense crease, *picture a soccer goalie box). Also, offensively, gotta have some spacing. 2 on the block, 1 in medium deep, 1 back as thrower would be effective for movement
So I already commented once, but I think it was harsh and not constructive, so this is try number two. I really like what this game is developing into, and I’m excited to see the rest of the season. I know that we haven’t seen the full extent of the meta development yet. I do have concerns about what the gameplay may become as the game develops. In my opinion, handball-styled games strongsuit is the flexibility of passing and making plays. I think that their downfall is a lack of active defense (stripping, checking, tackling, etc.). This is as someone with only a surface level understanding, however. I think that making players make interesting plays benefits the game and the viewer. This is why I support things like a shot clock, or even something like a number of steps before you have to pass or shoot. While slow, strategic, positional play can be deep and complicated, it is a type of skill that does not translate well to most viewers, and I believe that fast paced plays can still benefit skilled players while giving viewers more eyecandy. I think that based on this, making things like rebounds live would benefit the game a lot. It would add to the pace of play, and it would make it feel more “warehouse” to me, having to adapt to weird bounces and whatnot. I do, however, understand the safety concerns. I have to wonder if there are ways to alleviate them (flooring changes, maybe others), because I do really think the game would be more interesting, with more heroic plays. Along these lines, I also think the feet planted rule would be natural to remove. Again, safety is important, and it might would make slapping too powerful, but it seems like it could add interesting fluidity to attacks, especially if verticality is involved (I want to see like volleyball spikes). At the end of the day though, I’m a random viewer that has seen two games. You created the game and already played a whole season plus some practice games. You know better. Just my perspective looking in.
just because they created it doesn't mean they know better. In fact, I'd say they're "too close" to the situation because there are some terrible rules in this game and it lacks rules that would make the game more interesting. There have already been a load of comments from other with a much better grip on what type of rules should be in this game to make it more enjoyable to play and watch.
To me, it boils down to the amount of defense that can clog the goal: it makes an already complicated bounce pass so much harder to execute, so throwing is incentivized. Throwing stops the clock... It makes the game feel much slower than it really is, imo. I really think some light tinkering that encourages more slaps will instantly make this game equally safe but feel faster
I think this game would benefit highly, if there was a shot clock, a rule on how many steps you can take (introduce bouncing as a mechanism to take more steps), and I think one team must have 1 Def and 1 Off on respective side at all times. This sport has so much potential with just a few changes
My only recurring thought was that there should be a time limit for getting into the neutral zone after a missed shot. Especially at the end of the game. Something to prevent those last 11 seconds from running out while no actual play is happening
If you have the foot fault rule I think you can take away the no motion while shooting/slapping rule. It just slows the game down and takes away some great play making opportunities. Overall though, this game looks like so much fun!
One idea I have would be to add a floorball style dropnet to the goal. Would make it easier to see goals at home since the current net does not ripple, and the ball comes out so fast when it hits the back wall.
Maybe add a "relection zone" to the back walls? Like a big square either side of the net. That way you can fake a throw but if you hit the reflection zone, the ball isn't dead, and you can run it and recover and bounce to a team mate.
love this idea guys! others may have said this, but I think yall should add a shot clock of sorts to speed up the game a little bit. Keep up the amazing content yall! reminds me of my childhood of coming up with our own games :)
I feel like 3 people teams would open the game up a lot more and lead toore action, but obviously with the number of players available in the draft that wouldn't work. So another possibility is making it wear you can only have 3 players (including the goalie) in your defensive half at time. Would allow for more spacing and the possibility of quick breaks and one on ones with the opposing goalie
I think this game has a lot of potential. Good evolution in flow already from first game to this one and players are still figuring things out. I’d like to continue to see this game evolve naturally with players making adjustments to the play style. No need for rule changes yet. Let these gents cook!!!
Before the playoffs, I would love a bit more of an explanation of when a ball is officially dead after slaps and throws on goal. Sometimes the ball is still live for rebounds or for quick transition.
I feel like under 2 minutes of each half, the clock should stop on every throw/dead ball/turnover. I hated how the game ended on a running clock. No action, nothing the Rippers could do about it, no chance to even use their last Freeze they had. If you’re worried about the videos becoming too long then maybe just stop the clock under 3 minutes of the 2nd Half. Still good shit boys, LOVE the new sport. Super entertaining and interesting to watch you guys quickly adapt to. I know it’s gotta be WAY harder than it seems.
Rule Improvements: 1. Only 1 or 2 defensive players in the crease at a time 2. You can move when you slap (why is this a rule?) OR you don't have to bounce the ball to self-slap 3. Jump slaps are allowed, throws are not
I like this one a lot better than some of the other custom games. Personally, I would have extended those shooting triangles on the edges just a little bit further. But other than that it seems pretty great to me. I think there is going to be an evolution where they start moving closer and juggling passes back and forth and doing volleyball style setups in front of the goal. I assume you are able to slap pass, right? Because if you start making the opponent guess whether you are going to slap shot or slap pass back, it could make it a lot harder to defend. I'm imagining three or four players clustered around the goal slapping it back and forth until a hole opens up for a shot.
New rule recommendation (if it doesn't already exist): some sort of possession clock to prevent teams just holding the ball on their own half to waste time. Also, clock should stop until the ball is live or allow defending team one possession after the clock expires. Would create more exciting endings as opposed to this one where it was just kinda over suddenly.
I think maybe some sort of a quick shot clock would help speed the game up a bit. Maybe also some sort of penalty and odd man scenario opportunities to spice it up. Great concept for a game though. Excited to see it progress
Something I saw this game that might be worth considering for the future of Slapball: You can only have one thrower, and that person is your dedicated keeper as well. That person cannot go to the offense side of the court; the other three players MUST get offense side. More slaps, less all-game-ripping.
Would be cool if the throwing line was closer to net. Not by much, but enough to get the throws a more regular part of the game. I guess it wouldn’t be slappy as much for slapball, but my favorite parts are the throw attempts.
Having watched this a couple times now, I agree with the people suggesting hockey scoring techniques. Consider the throws like slapshots, and you'll realize that redirects could be devastating in this game. In fact, the original "shot" wouldn't even have to be accurate because you could consider it a pass. I'm thinking three in the zone, rotating thrower. Thrower will occasionally throw for goal, but will mostly facilitate with entry passes, sets, and redirectable shots. Then you can draw up plays more like basketball than hockey. You can't slap on the move, but you can throw on the move, so a quick double pass into a slapper could create an important angle change. In the same way, a pass or shot that bounces outside the crease could create odd angles for a slap. Essentially, your thrower needs to have passes that look like shots and shots that look like passes. Your slappers need to know where the ball is going before they get it, and any drawn plays should involve passes that cross the crease and quick passes back to the thrower for unexpected shots/sets/redirects.
Interesting game. A lot of things to learn about the game from this match. Feels it might be a little easy to kill the clock, freezes are really important for the end of the 2nd. Seems like against good defense throws don't work very well. Throwing is like the 3pt line in the NBA, still too early in the game to relly on a shot from so far away, it's more useful as a spacing tool with one man behind the line and all others making plays in the offense zone.
This sport looks like a blast! 24 second shot clock could be a cool dynamic. Also ability to call timeouts to stop the clock (would’ve been useful for the last 30 seconds of this game for example)
I think it would be more exciting if the slapping can be in motion or jumping. Also, it would open the game up to see a goal stand if the ball is in the net before a foot goes into the crease.
So in 5-a-side football (soccer). Only the designated goal keeper/tender is allowed in the goal area. I think this should be the rule here as when a team is on the attack, you’ve all of a sudden got 4 goalkeepers on the line against you making attacks basically impossible. Id also change the rule about slapping on the move if the ball is passed to you. If you can run into a slap, that would make attacks a lot more free flowing. I wouldn’t reset after every shot, allowing more of a scramble in the area…shot clock seems like a good idea as well. Other than that, I really like the game and this game literally had me on the edge of my seat at the end there
I really like this game! Its definitely taking a bit to get a hang of all the rules but I like seeing the movement and passing. A no movement rule for the carrier who has possession of the ball could be interesting but overall i am excited to see more once everyone gets a hang of it.
I gotta be honest, this feels like the kinda game your gym teacher made up that they think is amazing but everyone in class kinda hates it So many of these rules are just frustrating lmao. Dont know if i can watch this tourney tbh
To perfect this game, it feels like there should be a rule against having all defenders in the crease at once- It also feels like some of the movement around shots is a little inconsistent. I feel like self-slaps should have more lee-way when it comes to movement, like allowing the self-slap to act like a dribble. That self-slap by 21 just feels like it should have counted even if its against the current rules.
I do understand why a throw attempt results in the possession ending. But from a viewer's perspective it might be helpful to have the refs blow their whistle to signify the ball is dead. Modest gameplay suggestion:requiring the ball to be taken out from that back corner seems really slow and unnecessary. Could you just have a whistle after the throw to signify dead ball, the ref raises his hand and waits for the new offensive team to retrieve the ball, requiring only that they be behind the midline and bring all its offensive players to a set position (to avoid hectic restarts), then blows the whistle again to restart play. Ref could even give the defense a second or two to get set.
The freeze rule kinda resolved the potential stalling / no shot clock issue. However the park the bus strategy or the strict slap shot ruling would kill the game cos it would lead to tendency to long shot attempts, like everyone in nba shoots 3
I'm thinking along the lines of 20 second shot clock. 2 steps and a dribble\bounce and\or 5 steps and a shot\pass, only 2 in the goalie area at a time. I like the dribble for defense to create turnovers. Limited steps for more ball movement. I also think it will just get better as they learn movement and strategy too.
What about limiting the number of steps the ball carrier can take to create more ball movement? I also think being able to shoot on the run would make this game more interesting. You could allow players to score while moving as long as it’s a slap that hits the ground before going in, or a bounce pass that leads to slap goal.
Even with the low score it was still a fun watch. You can tell everyone is figuring out the game as well as how to play with their newly configured teams. With a little time it should just continue to improve
Very compelling sport so far! Game is still evolving but I think the clock needs to stop during resets post turnovers. Additionally, I think some version of a shot clock or a possession timer needs to exist; there’s nothing stopping a team from wasting a ton of time at the end with a one goal lead.
Maybe I’m just impatient with how slow learning this new sport has been, but I think they should highly consider a volleyball like approach to slap ball. If a players feet need to be set they just need to pass it to a player who is adjusting their feet a step at a time to remain stationary and rather than slap they should spike the ball toward the net. I may have missed something in the rules but I didn’t see anything about not being able to spike the ball.
So many of the rules seem to make it hard as hell to get a clean slap off. The D just crowds the net, that's 4 bodies to block a throw and 8 hands to intercept any type of pass down low.

This game is so cool
I love this channel. This feedback comes from a place of love, Jomboy.
Game designer checking in with notes after watching two games, as if someone was submitting a prototype for our next game:
* Two feet planted rule for slaps makes sense given the constraints (cement floor), but it isn't fun for people who are watching.
What I liked a lot:
* The Warehouse vibe.
* The close-game bonus point.
What I anticipate:
* Teams will get much, much faster resetting after a missed shot.
You gave the game more thought than they did. Cohen was having fun until the rules sucked the life out of the game.
Rule suggestions:
1) a 45 second shot clock. You don’t want to see a championship decided by a long clock kill.
2) if there is less than 1:30 in the game and the score is within 2 points, the clock will stop for play resets till the ball is thrown back into play.
This game is so fun to watch!!! Great work y’all.
45 second shot clock?? That would give each team like 5 possessions per half. It should be 15 seconds after half court is crossed
@@packers12to80 this is getting convoluted fast
@@jonk5834 the stationary slap shot shouldnt be a thing however maybe the shooter/slapper can only move 3 or 4 steps or something prior to a shot to keep them from just immediately running down and making a juke move then slapping it in. I dunno...definitely needs tweaking somewhere
Doesn't have to be any major change - maybe just a shot clock or even an individual player possession clock, though that's a lot of work to track
I think it's just you can't be over the line
For the next version of slapball maybe you could add a slap arc to up the midrange game. Somewhere between the keeper box and zone change. Outside the arc there’s no need to bounce before the slap but inside a bounce still must be completed. It probably wouldn’t be a highly used shot, but it will be open when the opportunity comes.
That goal ryan had late in the 2nd just has to be a goal. I get the reasoning for the feet set rule but that just has to be a goal otherwise a self slap is almost impossible. Think we’re gonna need some rule adjustments. I like the new game so far though.
Absolutely, everyone had that as a goal except the boss
Yeah, I mean he had both feet on the ground and stopped his forward momentum long enough to get the shot off. Basically a "rolling stop" at a stop sign.
@@thomaskeller2947It was almost identical to the first goal that the Rippers scored. In that case I think it was Rourke that didn't have both feet planted and slapped it in and it was called good
@@nps6724Funny analogy because a rolling stop at a stop sign is also illegal and not a real stop so if you were being serious in your agreement the goal should have counted you argued against yourself.
It is genuinely baffling that it was somehow called back. He literally planted his foot and stopped his momentum.
Ryan gets called for moving on a goal, but the first game Joez stepped through a slap. Love the idea of the game! Can’t wait to see y’all perfect it
Honestly I'm not sure that stopping should even be a rule
Yep. That should have been a goal.
Agree, having both feet set doesn't make any sense especially since the defense can have 4 mobile goalies. I think the last goal shouldn't have count with the foot clearly on the line, but they surprisingly did count it.
We absolutely need a shot clock too
This hasn't been an issue yet, and Jimmy says if a team is being inactive the ref will call a turnover. If we see a team start stalling to keep a lead then maybe, but I think it's fine with no shot clock
Gentleman’s rules to not just hold the ball and stall. If ref thinks it’s blatant stalling he will blow the whistle and it’s a turnover.
@@WarehouseGames Yah that's the sort of thing you can do when it's everyone working for the same company and no one's job is on the line as a result of a win or a loss.
Thinking about trying to make this real - as in something that others can play - if you don't have a shot clock as such you'll need to have some system.
@@ThandrieDavisin Handball, there is a subjective shot clock from the refs where something similar to what Jimmy said will happen. It works
@@ThandrieDavis idk Jimmy straight up says let's rest a bit while they have possession. Seems weird in a game that's relatively short.
I should learn not to eat when Jack Doyle talks in general. That man's little sneaky jokes have almost had me choking on multiple occasions. More "supple opportunities" 😂
The fact that all 4 players can be in their own goalie crease is going to absolutely kill this game
And the offense can't slap unless perfectly stationary, pretty much allowing defenses to park the bus with little fear of quick combos
spoiler: it doesn’t. Never becomes an issue. Rest of the games are higher scoring with much better strategy now that teams have played together.
@@WarehouseGamesimo it was already an issue in two of the games released so far especially jake vs jolly they just stood 4 dudes right in front of the goal the entire defensive game. Same for jimmys team really
@@WarehouseGamesthis game was awesome! Dont listen to em lol
"If the goalie is not in the crease, no player may be in the crease. However, if the goalie is present in their crease, any teammates may join him."
???
That's how you're going to get viral clips
It's not fun watching someone standing still trying to slap a ball through four dudes parking the bus
Way too dangerous for a bunch of employees playing on cement.
I’m still enjoying it but I just thinking of ways to make it even better.
first two games are easily the worst game play.
“Slappy Gilmore” an all time call
Seems to be some inconsistency in the “feet planted for a slap” rule, Ryan’s goal gets called off for having one foot planted + one foot midair, while D’versa’s goal (while not counting due to crease) is fine for having planted feet despite one foot being down and one foot dragging the toe? Neither one has both feet planted but would result in different calls?
I thought this as well. In terms of being set they were just about identical. I personally think that should count as set enough.
what D'versa had going for him was he's on Jimmy's team
That's what I thought. I don't have a huge issue with that rule as long as it's consistent
The difference is D'Versas foot is actually planted. It stays there through the shot and only comes up to run back. Cohen tried to plant his foot and couldn't keep it planted because he was moving.
So literally the rules as they are explained.
@@Antec121 They both planted one foot and the another one came down in a different spot. Not trying to start stuff I just don't see the difference
@@Kalbuir66 I think it's clear that Jimmy wants to win fair game.
Just my opinions on the rules after watching the first two games:
EDIT:
I am sure that many, if not all of these things were considered at some point, and there were probably legit reasons, based on game testing, safety, feasibility, etc, behind each decision. These are just my initial reactions and thoughts to the first two games.
Totally agreed. I left a comment with a lot of these suggestions after watching just one game
This is literally my exact takeaways
100% agree, and as we saw with the Cohen disallowed goal it's very subjective. Would hate to see a bunch of replay arbitration slow the game down
Keep watching. By the end of regular season the gameplay is really crisp with dynamic offenses.
Jimmy plays the game like John Stockton. Beautiful slapball
Keep it up!
I'll love to see some experimenting with different rules (five second rule for the ball holder specifically), but this looks really fun.
Jomboy is like the kid who reminds the teacher that there was homework. Just so nitpicky on the rules lmao. That goal by Cohen just HAS to count
been here since the beginning. this channel has come so fuckin far and there's still miles and miles left to go LFG
For the next time this is played, maybe add some goal-line cams like hockey? Either directly above the net or something from the side profile? May help the replay side of goal/no goal calls.
Loving this though. Really captivating so far, and it looks like it’s efficient to film and edit
15:35 Got distracted by a shiny penny; might’ve forgotten that the game started💀💀
Can't they just get a big slab of turf they can roll out?
17:48 that was volleyball esk
(Interested to see what strategies are able to cross over)
few issues here:
1) needs a shot clock
2) feet should be able to move on a slap. The game is dull without it and no one can create a shot standing still
3) you should not be allowed to have everyone on defense inside the box
4) the ball shouldn't go dead so often
Agreed on all counts. And when the ball does go dead, the clock should stop until the inbounds pass happens
I think the feet being still is a decent rule. That way you can’t just get a full running start. Teams haven’t fully realized a nice lob pass over the D for a slap. There have been a few plays like that but no team has fully grasp that idea yet
After Blitzball this is the best game, by far. Needs to become a regular in my opinion! Great job guys
1.) There's too many resets in the corner. I think maybe a double bounce should just be a turnover at the spot of the bounce.
2.) the second Ryan goal where he "didn't stop" was kinda meh. i think that stutter step should have counted as the stop and the follow through as long as it's not in the crease is fine
3.) I think only 2 defenders should be allowed in the crease at the same time. there's nothing stopping a team in the lead from just building a brick will in front of the goal.

The only rule that could be fixed is the player does not have to be stationary when slapping. This would create more action and more offense.
"I don't think I've ever seen that!" Great commentary.
Not even a shot clock, but like after a certain time and you haven’t gotten a shot off then a shot clock starts
Feels like you’ve gotta have an ability to get a good drop and slap if you post up right in front of goal.
Maybe a good offensive strat for a future Jolly Team if you can stretch the field.
Drop pass slaps are awesome. Not a lot in these games but they were big in the practice sessions.
Imagine if Jack used his blitzball pitches😂
If a shot is an automatic turnover the clock needs to stop.
love this idea guys! others may have said this, but I think yall should add a shot clock of sorts to speed up the game a little bit.
If youre throwing the ball can you bounce it into the goal?
I feel like under 2 minutes of each half, the clock should stop on every throw/dead ball/turnover. I hated how the game ended on a running clock. No action, nothing the Rippers could do about it, no chance to even use their last Freeze they had. If you’re worried about the videos becoming too long then maybe just stop the clock under 3 minutes of the 2nd Half. Still good shit boys, LOVE the new sport. Super entertaining and interesting to watch you guys quickly adapt to. I know it’s gotta be WAY harder than it seems.
Rule Improvements:
1. Only 1 or 2 defensive players in the crease at a time
2. You can move when you slap (why is this a rule?) OR you don't have to bounce the ball to self-slap
3. Jump slaps are allowed, throws are not
#2 and #3 are 100% never happening.
@@WarehouseGames Game would be better but ok
This kind of game you would be watching at midnight on ESPN 6.
Oh hey. 👋 Small world!
@@HackDiesel Howdy!
Would be cool if the throwing line was closer to net. Not by much, but enough to get the throws a more regular part of the game. I guess it wouldn’t be slappy as much for slapball, but my favorite parts are the throw attempts.
The court could be similar to hockey, where you have a neutral zone that extends all the way across
28:13 not a lot of highlights this game, but this moment made it look and feel like an actual sport for second lol ! Hope to see more growth
This sport looks like a blast! 24 second shot clock could be a cool dynamic. Also ability to call timeouts to stop the clock (would’ve been useful for the last 30 seconds of this game for example)
What about adding a shot clock?
Foot on the line on a follow through is ticky tack af. Not a fan of that rule.
Love the new game! although some of the rules feel bad, like they said in game one, they will be iterated on.
I think it would be more exciting if the slapping can be in motion or jumping.
Also, it would open the game up to see a goal stand if the ball is in the net before a foot goes into the crease.
Jake with the slapping Gilmore got me good man lmao
I gotta be honest, this feels like the kinda game your gym teacher made up that they think is amazing but everyone in class kinda hates it
So many of these rules are just frustrating lmao.
Team Story looking like they are built different at this moment. Curious to see how it all plays out. Should be a fun series 🤘🏼
You need to put cameras on the goal line. I had one of those in based on the angle of the bounce.
The freeze rule kinda resolved the potential stalling / no shot clock issue. However the park the bus strategy or the strict slap shot ruling would kill the game cos it would lead to tendency to long shot attempts, like everyone in nba shoots 3
I’ve been waiting for this game since watching the first match!
Cool game. Maybe a shot clock and tighter rules for defenders in the crease?
Even with the low score it was still a fun watch. You can tell everyone is figuring out the game as well as how to play with their newly configured teams. With a little time it should just continue to improve
I think you should be able to play blocked shots if you can grab it off the bounce all the turnovers kinda slow it down
Can you bounce the ball into the goal? Or does a shot have to be in the air
Gotta get the whole team out of the crease. And auto turnover off a throw is just a pace killer.
I think the addition of a shot clock might increase the stakes for the offense, and reduce the downside to throwing.
Great usage of bounce passes and bounce shots by the Breakdowns, hopefully other teams can replicate it
Very compelling sport so far!
