I actually think they could have been called for even more fouls but hey, we'd still be there if that were the case. The amount of fouls called against them was not an oddity but a norm. The IOWA Hawkeyes came uncomfortably close to losing their game with the West Virginia Mountaineers this evening. Caitlin Clark sent packing in her final game in Carver Hawkeye Arena in front of 15,000 fans would have been horrific. I have got to hand it to West Virginia coach Mark Kellogg. His team had the Hawkeyes in disarray for most of the game. It was by no means a pretty performance by the Hawkeyes. In fact, the team shot just 36 percent from the field and 23 percent from deep. That’s due much to WVU’s impressively scrappy and restless defense for a full 40 minutes tonight.
Which is why they fouled so much. It was their only chance, tho. Would have been a blowout if even one of Clark's team mates had made a single 3 pointer.

Free throws taken is skewed because WV took 34 3 pointers and didn't drive the ball. If you know anything about basketball this makes sense. Just watch the game. Iowa was driving and attempting close shots. WV was not. Plus WV was fouling at end when Iowa was in bonus.
Iowa was running to the rim, throwing the ball up from their hip and falling over and getting foul shots for being terrible. if you know anything about basketball and have eyeballs this is obvious.
Iowa shot 30 foul shots WVU 5, 4th quarter, Iowa scored 16 points, 14 were free throws. Played on Iowa's home court, a victory yes but lots of asterisks as WVU never quit, repeatedly turned Iowa over and came back twice from 10 point deficits.
You are 100% correct, all have too much time and money invested in CC to let her fizzle out in the second round. It will be interesting to see what happens when Iowa starts playing other high profile women teams. Think they will sit still for this one sided officiating?
The Affolter and one was the game-changing play. She ignored Caitlin Clark, took it herself, and saved Iowa's season. It's nice to see that Clark's teammates don't automatically defer to her. She would have clanked it like LeBron in Game 6 before Ray Allen saved him. If you're the unquestioned leader of your team, your teammate doesn't ignore you in that situation.
Agree 💯 but for the teams sake I hope they can figure it out. Though that was an amazing play, it's a very bad sign from a team chemistry and trust perspective. She looked her off which was the right move but there was tension between them on that play. Sometimes it's kept under the surface and they may laugh it off but they need to get it together or else they won't be making the final 4. (They can't beat SC so I won't even talk about a national championship)
Iowa goes as Clark goes. Simple as that. Her teammate taking that layup was simply a high IQ play. If you look at the clip, WV defense wasn’t set and they were still trying to match up.
Jordan Harrison D'ed Clark up... Clark got away with offensive fouls. Weak call on Harrison's great defense at the 45sec mark. Clark is a killer, but somebody finally came to play defense. Good game
Caitlin Clark is best college player of all time when you include scoring, assists, rebounds and leadership. She has been a wonder to watch. If you criticize CC, have you looked at the other 4 starters? Only CC could make a team go so far with so little.
Yeah, what kind of defense was that? I see this all the time in these Iowa games and think that when Clark gets to the WNBA, there is no way any defender is basically going to escort her to the basket.
@@baselee8076 ... WV played a very physical style of ball... and the player that guarded Caitlin was all over her the whole game. The refs allowed it to happen. That's the way it goes.

how many more fouls does your team need to beat a 8 seed. Iowa does a lot of crying and complaining to refs that are catering to them, they look spoiled and undeserving.
I agree. For a team that averages 90 to be held to under 70 is concerning. Iowa needs Martin and Marshall to have some 20 point games. Everybody knows how sensational Caitlin is but this had to be a wake up game. South Carolina, UConn, and LSU are not going to just lay down for the Hawkeyes and now they leave their home court. The pressure is on!
you have nothing to worry about. Iowa is playing 7 on 5 every single time they step on the floor. they even announce the ref's names and they run off your bench and shake the other coach's hand.
I feel bad for WVU. It seems like WVU got frustrated at times and couldn’t capitalize on Iowa’s off night. But the refs blew some calls that should have went in WVU favor. And shame on the commentators, because they talked about Iowa 90% of the game. It was so annoying. Iowa is a better team, but WVU should have won that game. Oh well, you can’t beat bad officiating.
WV came out with hacking at them as a main part of their strategy. They had to. If you think it’s unfair roll back the whole game and look at all the early non-calls they got away with. Don’t just look at one part of the game. Everyone calls unfair sometimes but you have to look at the whole game

I was worried about WV. Since getting blown out by Texas early in the year, they hung with everybody including Kansas State. Just glad Iowa got the dub. Not that it gets easier. It's about to get harder.
Alot of questionable calls on WVU... They couldn't have WVUs take out Iowa on their home Court. The free throw deficit was out of control. The final quarter Iowa went 14-17 and WVU shot 1 free throw.
I've said it all year games like this will be the downfall of Iowa. Games where Clark gets no help from her team mates. It worked in this game because WVU didn't shoot the ball well at all either. Had WVU not played such a physical defense and fouled as much as they did this probably has a different outcome.
Box score will tell the story....West Virginia 27 fouls Iowa 11.....Iowa didn't bring close to a A game tonight.. 21 to 17 total field goals in favor of West Virginia with a 9 to 5 advantage to West Virginia on 3 pointers made....Never seen this one coming... Iowa won it at the line. .Iowa 25 of 30 to West Virginia 3 of 5 .....
As always, a massive amount of fouls by one team reduces the number of field goal attempts by the other, and increases their free throws. No big surprise there.

IF is a big word. IF the other Iowa girls had made a single 3 pointer.....see how that works?

No, she had plenty of help from the refs.
@@FknTorn-xv2xs but isnt half of 64 32? (I shouldnt of even asked that.) Iowa scored 64 and she had 32 of the 64! 😆 🤣 😂

@@FknTorn-xv2xs "Half is Sixty"?! Huh? So Iowa scored 120 points this game...because half of that is 60? Thats simple math, genius.. yet you failed miserably. This is why you need to stay in school, kids.
Good tough game. Both teams played hard
Free throws taken is skewed because WV took 34 3 pointers and didn't drive the ball. If you know anything about basketball this makes sense. Just watch the game. Iowa was driving and attempting close shots. WV was not. Plus WV was fouling at end when Iowa was in bonus.
WV was driving too just now calls
Iowa was running to the rim, throwing the ball up from their hip and falling over and getting foul shots for being terrible. if you know anything about basketball and have eyeballs this is obvious.
Lmao.
Refs, espn, and ncaaa weren't going to let this game go any other way. Caitlin Clark and Iowa are their golden ticket.

You are 100% correct, all have too much time and money invested in CC to let her fizzle out in the second round. It will be interesting to see what happens when Iowa starts playing other high profile women teams. Think they will sit still for this one sided officiating?
WV played the best they can! Love from pitts
It an idiot
Affolter...👍❤👍❤
Affolter...👍❤👍❤
WVU played that game!!! Yall was not even hearing that crowd. I LOVE IT!
Congratulations West Virginia for a great game!!! Amazing Team effort ❤❤❤
Jordan Harrison D'ed Clark up... Clark got away with offensive fouls. Weak call on Harrison's great defense at the 45sec mark. Clark is a killer, but somebody finally came to play defense. Good game
There will be even better defenders against Caitlin coming up. Should be a great 16.
Caitlin Clark is best college player of all time when you include scoring, assists, rebounds and leadership. She has been a wonder to watch. If you criticize CC, have you looked at the other 4 starters? Only CC could make a team go so far with so little.
Clark gets the superstar calls.
She gets hacked every game because she's a baller. There's no conspiracy. Just good basketball.

Did any one else notice number 32 for West Virginia at around 3:30 mins into the video? That seems odd if you ask me
Yeah, what kind of defense was that? I see this all the time in these Iowa games and think that when Clark gets to the WNBA, there is no way any defender is basically going to escort her to the basket.
WV took a lot of threes and it's less likely to create a foul than a drive to the basket. WV also played kinda dirty.
just like 1980s Georgetown
Refs were definitely pulling for iowa.
I really pray they end up playing LSU again. The media and fans would go crazy.
It should have been a 25 point edge for Iowa. No one was hitting.
Yes we shoulda been up by ten at half. We did have to many turnovers and alot of easy baskets missed
The 4th quarter was not Iowa basketball. We couldn’t make a basket for over 5 min and when we did finally score it was 4 free throws
@@baselee8076 ... WV played a very physical style of ball... and the player that guarded Caitlin was all over her the whole game. The refs allowed it to happen. That's the way it goes.
Caitlin Clark is the most watched athlete ever she is gaining thousands of fans with each hater that opens their mouth ! Awesome Caitlin Clark keep them 3 point shots going we love you from Pennsylvania!!❤
Molly Davis is coming back, this will cut the turnovers down by half. WV does alot of hand checking. Hand checking is consider a foul.
Molly Davis is coming back? She's still injured.
Would be nice if she did. Like, REALLY nice.
how many more fouls does your team need to beat a 8 seed.
Iowa does a lot of crying and complaining to refs that are catering to them, they look spoiled and undeserving.
The more aggressive team will get the majority of free throws. Wv was raining 3's majority of the game and shooting jump shots.
Iowa is going to have to play a lot better than this to keep moving on. Hopefully this was their "bad game"
Iowa is playing 7 on 5 every single time they step on the floor. they even announce the ref's names and they run off your bench and shake the other coach's hand.
they take off a Clark warm up and hand it to the water boy as they stand up.
Yeah Gabby needs to make some shots and Caitlin has a bad habit of making a lot of turnovers and the whole team misses too many layups.
What a good game
You can thank Kellogg for the style of play - his tough guy pre-game comments predicted how his players would play - like thugs.

Iowa got a lotta questionable calls down the strech

Alot of questionable calls on WVU... They couldn't have WVUs take out Iowa on their home Court. The free throw deficit was out of control. The final quarter Iowa went 14-17 and WVU shot 1 free throw.
WV played "slap happy" constantly poking and pushing, while Iowa was a brooms length away. WV had a couple take downs with pins.
CC always doing her thing!
If the NCAA is so “rigged” in favor of Iowa, why would they give them the hardest draw of the tournament?

Refs favored Iowa. Clark is in the script

I've said it all year games like this will be the downfall of Iowa. Games where Clark gets no help from her team mates. It worked in this game because WVU didn't shoot the ball well at all either. Had WVU not played such a physical defense and fouled as much as they did this probably has a different outcome.
