    Dave, I have this exact model on my bench right now. I too am shaving the bridge. Plenty of wood to work with. Good video. I approach this the same way you did. Thanks! Steve

    I find the acoustic top tends to sink therefore its not necessary to shaved the saddle unless its very high

    If I did that with that little plane, I'd end up slipping, and taking a deep shred out of the the top! Thats why I leave it to the pros like you, sir!

    Nice!......I got a 20 year old Martin D-28 thats gonna need a bridge shave, a little down the road. I'm guessing ebony is more of a pain in the butt than rosewood?

    I like that little chisel, makes it a little less of a health hazard to have rosewood shavings instead of dust.

    Dave thanks for all you vids on guitar tech, I have a Yamaha FG-730S that has a high action, never got it setup when I bought it, my bad. From watching your channel I know now how to fix it, first I checked the neck, bowwy woowy. Then truss rod, yay it works but had no tension on it. My bridge and back of the guitar are not dead straight, slight bulge, live in pacific northwest with 60% humidity. Got new bone saddle coming and will shave down once neck and relief are correct, then new strings.

    Your little rule about lowering the bridge surface twice as much as you want to lower the action at the 12th fret is set in stone actually....it's called physics haha. Good to see somebody working on guitars that follows a rule that actually makes sense.

    Thanks for this one Davey, reinforced my use of a belt sander. I have it turned upside down w/a speed controller, grab the saddle with a small vice-grip (w/rubber taped jaws), and take it down just until the pencil mark disappears, remark & redo if necessary. It sure makes a quick job of a large amount that would ordinarily take a half hour+ to do with a file or piece of sandpaper on a flat surface. I use a coarse belt, then dress it on an fine emery board. I like your little hand plane, too!

  • @TaralgaBushAdventure

    I like the little hand plane, as the shavings look easier to clear up (and less harmful) that the fine dust the multitool sander makes.

    Hey Dave - my wife bought me a Fein multimaster for my b'day last year YAY ! They are a really solid professional tool. I had a plastic-y Dremel oscillating which is junk by comparison. Cheers.

    Hand planes are used in one direction only,with the grain and skewed in relation to the work piece to prevent tear out and chatter.

  • @trevorlindsey580
    @trevorlindsey580 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was shaking my head until you said hand plane. They work so much better and will save huge amounts of time. I have used one for 35 years. Invest in a belt sander. I can't live without one, and with as many saddles as we have to modify, it will save you hundreds of hours over your lifetime. I love your videos since they express all the pain every luthier knows all too well, but can't express to their clients. Free therapy!

    Hi Dave , love the video`s , keep em coming , could just the front of the saddle , before the bridge pins , be shaved down so you did`nt have to worry about deepening the pin holes ?? I have an old guitar that needs this adjustment , but without a reamer it would be hard , just shave down the front ?? What do you think ?

    @MrGuitarbike 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I post too much. Anyway, I have this at least 30 year old guitar (mom played it when she was a kid) and it's such a good sounding guitar, unfortunately, it's a no-name korean made with a bar instead of truss rod, and the wood where the bridge is got pulled up from the years of tension, and the neck has a huge hump in it where it meets the guitar. So basically it's "gooched" and can't be fixed. it seriously has a 1/4 inch action at 12th fret. Good slide guitar though. XD

    Hey Dave, I've got this weird buzz on my guitar and I think it's coming from the saddles, is that even possible? Any way to check if that's the case and if it is can it be fixed by a luthier? Cause I dunno if I can buy a replacement bridge (more specifically I don't know if there is one that would fit). Guitar's pretty old, it's a Washburn WI64V Idol and apparently it's vintage now. HELP PLX :

    Very unproffesional of you not to cover the sound hole so all those shavings dropped down into the guitar.I have several 8 string and a couple of 14 string guitars that need some work,but you wont be working on them,also that tubing you hogtied around the neck is rubbing the laquer off the neck,you gonna fix that.Oh by the way I know its nice enough outside to fire up that grill ffs.J

  • @davidallen346
    @davidallen346 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would just use lighter guage of strings u need slightly high action for that good acoustic tone
