I attempted it a couple years ago, starting on the north end. Heard that would be tough. Heard right. Tapped out halfway through but still had a great time.
If you're looking for some shorter thru options -- I'd highly recommend the Sheltowee Trace. It runs about 350 miles through Kentucky and Tennessee. I live in the area and have volunteered with the local trail association; it's a gem of a trail that often gets overlooked by hikers.
Can’t wait! I just read an article (on The Trek I think) that said getting your PCT permit isn’t that bad. Best advice I got from it is to just practice logging in. (And having family around is definitely helpful, too!) (Also - love the shirt!)
I can’t wait for your PCT adventure. When you make it to Bridge of the Gods Oregon/Washington border I want to meat up. I was able to meet IBTAT in 2019 and help him resupply and take him out to eat. I had back surgery and was stuck in a chair during most of your AT throughhike and your videos were the highlight of my low time. Your adventure gave me hope for when I would be healthy and I want to tell you thanks in person. Thanks for all you do and your positive attitude.
One for your questions episode - what hostels are must stays for you and why. Examples based on my limited experience are 1)Mountain Harbor hostel for the amazing big huge breakfast by Dave and 2) Boots Off hostel for the two person showers (yes I hike with my girlfriend)
Exciting news all the way around!!! My nephew, his wife and I are heading to Oil Creek this weekend and doing a short hike, but staying at the Wolfkiel shelters on Friday night and Cow Run on Saturday. We love that place, a lot of cool things to see there. You're going to be a busy guy this year with all your trips. Looking forward to the content. Thanks for sharing Frozen! -dave
Brooks Cascadia 16 have worked really well for me and my wife. We did Pictured Rocks last year with them after about 10 miles of prior use. I have tried Lone Peaks, but could not get used to the zero drop. It is really great to see you back at it again as well. So glad you and your family is doing well.
@@FrozensAdventures so I don’t have any issues but they are no lonepeak’s. Honestly I would buy a pair from Zappos and wear them around the house for a couple days. Then if they don’t work for you return them. They have a great return policy and have awesome customer service.
I thru hiked the AT last year in Hoka Speedgoat 5’s. I was really happy with the comfort but not the durability. I went through 5 pairs and they were ready to replace after 300 miles or so. I run in Brooks and have always liked the performance. I just bought a pair of Cascadia 16’s. The toe box has been widened and come in an E width. They have a rock plate and are quite isolating over roots and rocks. I really like them so far, very comfortable on 12:59 16 mile hike. They look like they will hold up much better than the Hokas.
I'm currently looking into the Foothills Trail in SC. Spring is the ideal time and slow hikers finish in about a week. I'm building up to the Mountains to Sea Trail. One day I'll make the time to do the AT.
Yay! Laurel Highlands is on my list for this year, with a friend in June. Nice to hear from you again....glad you're back! Bartram is on my long-term list. You'll probably get to it before I do.
Hey dude! Good vibes to you and yours. I followed Chocolate Balls PCT hike years ago, several others since, but you guys could be brothers. Go get it! Crackerjack.
Dude, don't stress it. You got nothing to worry about. I was the heaviest I've ever been when I started in Campo. PCT is cake compared to the AT. You'll kill it.
I just did R2R2R in the Grand Canyon....if you can swing it...consider 1st week of December.....weather was great and relatively low number of hikers on the trail!
Sweeeeet! Frozen back in the house!! Coming back with a vengeance with all these planned trips!! 😎 haha …got me all excited like a blockbuster movie or tv series is in the making and getting close! lol
I switched from Altra to Topo a few years ago. Topo Terraventure is similar toe box, not quite as comfortable as Lone Peak straight out of the box, but much more durable. Mine still feel like new after 9 months and several hundred miles of hiking, and dog walking.
Another unsolicited option for footwear is Inov-8, specifically the Trailfly G270. I could not be happier with their performance on a 200-mile thru hike this past summer. No holes, incredibly comfortable, grippy, and ZERO DROP!! I'm still wearing them every day.
The Foothills Backpaker has a video on the Bartram- AT loop. There is also an AllTrails write up on the loop. I'll be doing a Foothills Trail/Chattooga Trail/Bartram Trail to Scaly Mt. Loop starting at the end of February this year for my winter hike. I did the Foothills Trail again last year. It had changed a good bit since 94. A lot more popular as well.
Lock Laces: I find they add too much slippage on multi-day hikes, particularly in the heel area and can result in some nasty blisters. That said, I love wearing them around the house.
Many Salomon shoes have lace locks. I have the Altra Mont Blonc Boa with the Boa lace system. I didn’t think I’d like them, but now that I’ve done a bunch of hikes in them I can report I love the shoes. I know shoes are very specific to the individual though. What works for me may not work for others.
The Bartram is a great trail. I've done it all the way through once and halfway another time. If you can get a copy of Thomas Reece's "Bartram Trail" guide, I recommend it. It's small and light and well written. Unfortunately, his web site seems to have disappeared, so I can't tell you where to find a copy right now. Regardless, the Bartram is well worth doing. If you need a ride or resupply, I also recommend Chica and Sunsets Hostel. I've used them twice for resupply and have stayed there once - highly recommended. Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with anyone mentioned, just a satisfied customer.
I'm leaving April 2nd for my AT nobo 2023. I saved money for years and bought gear over the last 2. Have health issues so have been training for4 years. It's finally here and i'm so excited. I was going to hike in 22, but decided to postpone by 1 year.
Had the same issue with the lone peak 5 tried the warranty and was told “normal wear and tear” last time I buy Altra. Switched to Hoka and I love them. They hold up and no need to worry about their warranty.
The Pemi Loop is magical. You'll love it. You've already hit some of the highlights, but it's still very much worth doing. Also, many loops in Shenandoah involve hiking down to a valley and then back up, so while the AT through the park is pretty easy, other trails can be deceptively hard. You may want to check out the Three Ridges Loop as well. Have fun!
Sounds like a fantastic year ahead! So far I hadn't had any major issues with the Lone Peaks (using the 5's but I believe the 6's are out now) but they do seem to wear out faster than most other brands. But then most other brands cause me feet problems due to width problems...so I tolerate the wear issue. Happy trails!
Try Danner, I love them. They are not cheap, but you will not have any quality issues. They have a Trailcomber that is $75 dollars on sale. I us this for my summer hiker. each shoe weight is a mesly 8oz. But i would recommend the Trail 2650. I believe they are made in the USA also and you will not have any support issues.
Oboz is my go-to shoe company. the Sawtooth low or the Arete low are both good options. I used the Sawooth, more of a hiking shoe, on my AT thru-hike. but use the Arete now and is much more like a trail-runner. Great insoles, but not zero-drop if you like that aspect of the Altra.
Good to see you back… congrats on your baby. I agree with the newer Altras .. buy from REI as a member you can take shoes back for up to six months no question asked… just saying
Love the Foothills Trail! Just did a 32-mile section this past weekend and plan for a full thru sometime this fall. Looking forward to the 2023 hiking season!!
Lock laces are also great for kids who technically can tie their shoes but aren’t good at getting them tight! Altras have been my most comfortable shoe but they don’t last as long as other brands. Hitting the Foothills Trail in March with my kids, it will be our first multi-day trip together!
Shoe recommendations: Inov8 Trailfly G-270 (zero drop; wide toe box). They are very close fitting; I size up 1/2 size. They wear like iron. You'll retire them not because the uppers are ripping or falling apart, but because the midsole finally gets compressed after too many miles. You can order directly from the UK and pay with your Amazon account; the 2022 model is on sale now til end of January for $50 + shipping. I also like the fit of Topo Runventure 4, but haven't had them long enough to speak to durability.
Hi Jason, don't know if anybody mentioned it before but you don"t need the permit from the pcta. It just makes things easier since you can hike all the way without worrying about a permit anymore. But instead you can also hike getting the permits you need by just getting them before or while on trail. It takes a little bit of planning ahead but you can start whenever you want. And some permits you might not even need since you can hike through those areas in one day. Happy trails and stay safe!
CDT: You are a veteran of a successful AT Thru-hike and that means you've learned what you need to be successful on the CDT. The only concern for you may lie in the solitude but there is grace in that as well. Good luck on PCT permitting!
I abandoned Altra years ago when their Timos were just crap. Topo Athletic retain a foot shaped front end, and I get tremendous comfort from the Keen NXIS shoes.
Sorry to tell you this, too late. Thanks to you, I found the Altra Lone Peak 5.0 and stocked up (5 pairs - 3 at half price) for a spring 2024 AT thru hike attempt. My feet love them, and the pair I have been training in are holding up great!
You should come back to Minnesota and do the border route trail. Starts at the northern terminus of the superior hiking trail and follows the mn/Canadian border. You can also connect to the kekekabic trail for a even longer hike.
So sad to hear about your Altra experience, I've used them exclusively for years but I have been hearing the same thing from many people. I am bummed, but I will have to find a new shoe company too.
I got the new Lone Peak 7, and Topo Terraventure 3. Both are great but I prefer the Topos. Similar to LP, but seems more durable and has a better outer sole with the vibram . The Topo also seems to have a better and more durable insole. That said, I liked my LP 7 enough to keep it, so I alternate between them.
You can hike the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim without a permit. It's only if you want to stay overnight at the campgrounds at the bottom of the canyon do you need a permit.
Solomon speed cross 5. I have about 1000 miles per pair, hiking, gravel road walks, farming. The snow tread is insanely good on granite and wet rocks out west.
Solomons are too narrow for my feet unfortunately. They are another shoe brand that starts out comfortable but as my feet swell, my little toe wants to pop out of the side.
Who are we watching from the 2023 AT class? Looking for someone that posts on a regular basis, good quality videos, and has a darn good chance of going a long way. :D I have been spoiled by Outdoor Adventures, Taylor (NH), and Jay.
Gerard is one of my favorite backpacking trails, along w Tracy Ridge. I’ll be in Oil Creek this weekend for a AT shakedown. Look into Topo Athletic if you’re disappointed w Altra. Look up Parisian shoelace knot to keep your laces tied. A Ranger in Philmont taught us this. Thanks for the Laurel Highlands tip, never heard of it. Good luck on all of your adventures
I tried on some cascadias at REI there before they closed that location in Robinson. They were very comfortable. The tow box was okay, but after using lone peaks, it’s never going to be enough. I don’t care for the zero drop much but I am going to train with them this spring because I love the toe box too much.
I ran in the Lone Peaks for 8 years, the previous version the 6 was the least durable yet, gave out at under 250 miles. Altra was bought by a big conglomerate and the shoes are definitely worse now. I switched to Topo Athletic which I recommend, the Terraventure 3's are very similar to the Lone Peaks but lasted almost twice as long, the Pursuit is also a really good shoe.
Hi Jason! What an awesome video! Sounds like a busy year for you. I did 100 miles in 6 months last year, lost 30 pounds, and feeling great. Can't wait to get back out there as soon as the weather here in Virginia cooperates. This year I'm shooting for 200 miles. Thank goodness your surgery went ok, and please be careful out on the trails this year. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers, my friend. Hope to see you out on the trails some day. Happy Hiking!!! 🙂
Glad your getting back into the game (hiking). Your Foothills trail video from the past made it look easier than it was. I also recommend doing it east to west which is what I did in Oct 2022. Good luck on a PCT permit. AT hike for me in 2023 I hope. Wanted to ask you about your gear storage area behind you in your video. Looks well organized. What did you use for that set up?
You have other options for permits on the PCT besides the PCTA permit. Or you can estimate your arrival at Sonora Pass (Kennedy Meadows North) and get a permit from the PCTA from Sonora Pass NOBO to Canada for that date. Only permits that begin from south of Kennedy Meadows south have a quota.
Did you join the Facebook group? I learned today that the sierra section permit from the forest service is also non-quota. By the way that Sierra section permit allows you to camp at guitar lake which is much closer than Crabtree meadows to Mount Whitney. It makes your Mount Whitney summit hike, shorter.
I can only recommend the Danner Trail 2650. Yes, they named the shoe after the PCT. Also from Danner, & on sale rite now, the Danner Trailcomber. Got a pair for Xmas, I think U’d really like those too. Love U’r channel Frozen, good to see U!!
I used Altras for my 223 mile thru hike of the Ouachita Trail in Arkansas in 2021 (about 2 1/2 weeks of use). That is all they were good for. They were falling apart at the end. I don't know how many miles you AT/PCT/CDT etc. thru hikers get out of them but that's all they were good for, for me. If I did another comparable backpacking trip I would use another brand.
If permits don’t work: International AT (particularly ME to New Brunswick) or the Great Divide (sorta the CDT north in Canada). - I’ve not hiked either, but it would be fun to see your videos from the either.
I was having some injury related problems with Altra LPs and have since switched to Hoka Speedgoats and haven’t looked back. Loving them so far! You’re also really going to enjoy that Plex Solo. It’s great. Especially how much it packs down in the backpack. Hope you snag your PCT permit! Just put on your AT movie for my partner to get her familiar as I’m planning on a NOBO on 24. Have a good summer and congrats on being a dad!
I’ve been hoping you would do a Grand Canyon hike some day! I’ve backpacked it a few times and it never disappoints. I hope every permit comes through so we can follow along on all your adventures!
If you plan on going to any national park, let alone the grand canyon, you have to get a permit to film, if you are filming for monetization purposes now. Takes upwards of 2 weeks to get a permit granted.
3 of your trail picks are on our list this summer! I’m 20 min from LHHT thinking about Rt 56 to Decker tomorrow! This June Shenandoah NP then end of the month Grand Canyon on our way out West! Maybe we will see you on the trail 😊 ( AT q&a , do you think you will do another AT thru hike some day? )
Glad to see the channel back!! I really enjoy your channel and it has really helped and inspired me to do longer hikes and really dial in my hammock gear! Have you ever considered hiking the Midstate trail? I live close to section 20 and frequent the areas very often along with the WRT and BFT. I’m hoping to through hike the MST next year if I can manage time away from work. Looking forward to watching your up and coming trips! Happy hiking!!
Quick question for you and possibly a tip for anyone reading that doesn't know this about tying their shoes... Many people tie their shoes with their dominant hand as the one that crosses over, thus the initial overhand knot and the following overhand on two bights (which makes the bow) are in the same direction. This is akin to a granny knot or double overhand know where the second is just a bow. If you train yourself to tie one of them the opposite way from the way that feels natural, you'll get a knot that's akin to the square knot which holds much tighter. After I started doing this, my shoes came untied way less. Not only hiking but everyday shoes.
@@FrozensAdventures Cool. Too bad it didn't work as well for you. Good luck with the new ones. I'm excited to see you're doing the Pemi loop. I love it. I've done it annually and I'll probably go this year. Hopefully see you around the White Mountains.
@@FrozensAdventures not sure if you know about Isle Royale. I just posted my video about it on my page. youd love it! i saw 16 moose, two walked right through my camp, and a fox came RIGHT up to me! a phenomenal place!
@@FrozensAdventures There sure is! I just wanted to tell you about it because it's a truly special place. Hope you get a chance to go someday. The nations least visited but most revisted park!
Hi Jason 👋 always great to hear from you my friend, looking forward to your next hikes, appreciate you, stay safe and take care man 🙏👍Wishing you and your family all the best🙂
Maybe, regarding footwear, give OBOZ a shot? Bridger? Sawtooth?? I think Oboz' footers, are really outstanding. I have also switched out their stock inserts, with Sofsoles inserts...also awesome. Just a thought. Regardless, I have watched you for a few years. Really enjoyed your Appalachian Trail video. I hiked the A.T., in 8 sections, finishing it in 2021. Summited Mt. Katahdin on October 7th, 2021. Life changing, for sure. I am also interested in hiking the PCT, and CDT. Peace and Happiness - "FOOL-INJECTED", my Trail name...lol ( Play on fuel-injected )
You'll love the Plex Solo. I've got about 20 nights with mine and it is awesome. Super light and easy to set up. I'm about your size (5'7" and 150lbs) and it is quite roomy.
I just went on Amazon earlier today actually and ordered a pair of lone peaks 6s and also some MERRELL MOAB FLIGHT trail shoes. Amazon does the try for 7 days for free so I’m gonna go give both of those a shot! I have high hopes for the merrells!
I used to absolutely love merrell's. At some point in 2017 they made their shoes lower-quality and not as wide as their normal shoes so hopefully since then they've got their act together
"something WE wanted done" ha. Gotcha man.
Looking forward to hiking 2023! Have fun everybody.

Gonna be spending money on plane tickets so I'd like to do more than just day hike
Can’t wait for your review on the new curve 35
I finally ordered mine last week have been wanting one for 2 years now. 9 week lead time 😩
Gerard is one of my favorite backpacking trails, along w Tracy Ridge.
Salomon shoes all the way.
I tried on some cascadias at REI there before they closed that location in Robinson. They were very comfortable. The tow box was okay, but after using lone peaks, it’s never going to be enough. I don’t care for the zero drop much but I am going to train with them this spring because I love the toe box too much.
If you end up at the NOC, get a raft and do a self-guided raft trip down nantahala. No need for a guide its like class 1 or 2
I ran in the Lone Peaks for 8 years, the previous version the 6 was the least durable yet, gave out at under 250 miles.
They did my return with no problem.
My new balance trail runners are amazing and they were 115$. So not too bad.
I recommend Topo shoes if you want something thats got that Altra shape but made a little better.
I switched to the terraventure 3s. So far so good.
So it's just the desert section for quota permits?
@@FrozensAdventures yes
Did you join the Facebook group? I learned today that the sierra section permit from the forest service is also non-quota. By the way that Sierra section permit allows you to camp at guitar lake which is much closer than Crabtree meadows to Mount Whitney. It makes your Mount Whitney summit hike, shorter.
I backpack in Asics 4E (extra wide) running shoes. They're cheap, comfortable and last long enough. Bought 3 pairs for $40 each a couple of years ago
Asics are what I wear now too. They are durable. I switched to them for their wide fit as well
If the permits don't work out, take a look at the Bruce trail in Canada. Short drive from PA and it would only take a month to walk. Yoyo in 2 months.
Brooks Cascadias have been good for me.
Try the Hoka’s. I have one and like the tent. I’ve gone to the Durston Xmid Pro2 which I love.
That's my experience as well since the lone peak 3.5's
I am really enjoying my Hoka Speedgoats with the Superfeet inserts. Incredible stability.
Hey! I’ve LOVED the Danner Trail 2650 shoes. I also love Sportiva.
I would consider the VJ trail runners excellent tread and seem to hold up well not a zero drop though.
If permits don’t work:
International AT (particularly ME to New Brunswick) or the Great Divide (sorta the CDT north in Canada).
2nd them Hoka Speedgoatsand Hoka in general
Lol I've actually stayed at racoon creek for a summer camp when I was younger 😂😂
I enjoy Oil Creek. It’s my go-to for hiking in the dead of winter…they keep the paved trail pretty clear!
The bike trail is excellent!
I’ve been hoping you would do a Grand Canyon hike some day! I’ve backpacked it a few times and it never disappoints. I hope every permit comes through so we can follow along on all your adventures!
Hey man, I know you're booked out for the foreseeable future. I wanted to invite you to come to Alabama and hike the Pinhoti trail.
Maybe one day!
I switched from Altra's to Hooka's
I've tried it but they still come untied for me. I watched it first on a Ted Talks a few years back.
@@FrozensAdventures Cool. Too bad it didn't work as well for you. Good luck with the new ones. I'm excited to see you're doing the Pemi loop. I love it. I've done it annually and I'll probably go this year. Hopefully see you around the White Mountains.
Looking forward to this hiking season. Glad you're getting on the trail this year. Can't wait.
I'm soooo ready
@@FrozensAdventures not sure if you know about Isle Royale. I just posted my video about it on my page. youd love it! i saw 16 moose, two walked right through my camp, and a fox came RIGHT up to me! a phenomenal place!
Wow 16! That's crazy. I know about it but who knows when I'll actually get around to making my way over there. So many things!
@@FrozensAdventures There sure is! I just wanted to tell you about it because it's a truly special place. Hope you get a chance to go someday. The nations least visited but most revisted park!
off the wall question. Do your have best practices around parking your car. What to look for, what to avoid, etc.
Interesting. I've dealt with Altra warranty twice in the last two years and had great service.
Hi Jason 👋 always great to hear from you my friend, looking forward to your next hikes, appreciate you, stay safe and take care man 🙏👍Wishing you and your family all the best🙂
Thanks, you too!
Try Topo ultra venture pros.
On my second pair. Love them.
Since the front doors appear to be higher up. Any difference in condensation?
I just went on Amazon earlier today actually and ordered a pair of lone peaks 6s and also some MERRELL MOAB FLIGHT trail shoes. Amazon does the try for 7 days for free so I’m gonna go give both of those a shot! I have high hopes for the merrells!
I used to absolutely love merrell's. At some point in 2017 they made their shoes lower-quality and not as wide as their normal shoes so hopefully since then they've got their act together
@@FrozensAdventures I’ll give you an update on how the Moab flights are when I get them
