Herm, I was stationed in Germany during that time. When I got there in 1988 it was still East and West Germany. When I left, the wall had been down for about 2 months. It was an amazing time to be there to witness the mass exodus of East Germans to the west. You could pick them out easily because they all drove the same car since there was only a couple models they could buy. These people had everything they owned tied to the roof and trunk, while the whole family was packed inside.
While I lived in Denmark, we visited a friend of my wifes family, who owned a rehabbed farmhouse in the Danish countryside. In the dining room of this house there was a wine cellar that had been built in the early years of WW2. But when it was built it was built as a hiding place for Danish Jews. Denmark got almost its entire Jewish population out of the country and into Sweden before the Nazis invaded. So much of Europe has hidden or forgotten history, its cool when you discover something. The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 to keep East Berliners from escaping to West Berlin. Berlin was divided into 4 sectors, British, French, American, and Russian. So when you were in West Berlin, you were still surrounded by East Germany. The Berlin Wall stood for nearly 30 years, falling in 1989. One of my brothers friends was stationed in Germany when the wall fell and he went to Berlin. He brought a piece of the wall home for my dad, it still sits in his office. My wife remembers traveling through West Germany on family vacations in the 80s.
I’d recommend getting out of the bigger cities after you see the main points of interest. Like America, big cities tend to be very different than the rest of the country.
Was in Berlin in 74 while in the Army. Was able to go to East Berlin through Check Point Charlie and see the stark contrast between the east and West Berlin. Definitely an eye opening experience, and of course flipped the bird to an East German soldier in a guard tower on the other side.
My wife and her siblings all have a painting from right there at Checkpoint Charlie. Her dad commissioned the painting with Don Stivers. Her dad was the last Berlin Bregade Commander.
Thanks, Kenny, for sharing your day in Berlin with us and it is a unique view because it is yours today. And lots of us only saw West Berlin when the wall was standing decades ago. And for WWII history lessons, check out Mark Felton, a British historian, here on TH-cam. He's smarter than all of us combined on WWII history.
I was an MP at Check Point Charlie 54 years ago. I wish I was able to give you a history lesson on Berlin and the wall, at least what I know. I always say that Berlin was one of the most unique cities in the world. Also, the last 6 months I was there I was responsible for the “You are leaving the American sector” signs.
Been at the Rolex 24 all night. Just thinking sitting in the stands how sad it was I don’t give a crap about the 500 anymore and turned down free tickets😢
Scorpions Wind of Change was based uniting Germany into one and the end of the Eastern European bloc. A reminder of the divided Germany of East and West Germany for almost 30 years.
November 9th 1989. My 28th birthday when people first began to tear down small sections of the wall. Berlin was divided into two sections. 1/2 East Berlin was controlled by the Russians and West Berlin was controlled by the allies. The Allies had the Supply West Berlin with the airlift because Russia refused to allow the Allies traffic into the City by Road
6:30 …or it might because bottled water in plastic could be poisoning us with microplastics. A lot of food standards in the US permit toxins that are not permitted in most european countries. That’s not exclusively ‘green,’ that’s healthy.
We had to ask permission and be approved to ride the train to Berlin..You need to visit Daca German prison camp.We were required to walk through it so we realized why we were there.
It looks soooo dismal theres no sunshine not even while u were in Italy I think maybe a different time of year I need sunshine enjoy the rest of your trip get back to st Louis safely!

The Russians were left to go in to Berlin because the Germans attacked them and the Americans generals wouldn't let Patton lose
