I became addicted to Dr. Gates’ show “Finding Your Roots” last year. This show is so fascinating, especially if you are a student of history, and he presents it in such a relatable and respectful way. Dr. Gates is a treasure.
Dr. Gates gives me the goosebumps. His tenacity to explore in wonderment about a complete stranger family history is so fascinating. I would truly love to have Dr.Gates explore into my parents, families history.😊
Dr. Gates .. one of my top 10 favorite human beings on this planet. This 80-year-old wishes you good health and happiness, sir. And many more years of discovering our roots. We are all connected.
I’ve always admired Dr Gates for years! He tells us so real history, black segregation, slave, and immigrants- and would to meet him and his life! He is a great man in our history and ourselves! Thank you, Dr Henry Louis Gates!
My book club just read "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" by Ernest P. Gaines, a fictional work about a woman who lived through Emancipation in 1865 to the 1950s, and in our discussion, I had to bring up Dr. Gates' name and all that I've learned from the show. So many details in the book were factually correct and this I know from watching all 10 series and learning so much about African American history.
I’m a big fan of Dr. Gates and his work! He has a God given ability to pull us into history in a beautiful, interesting, compassionate way! I have been watching this show since it was called: African American Lives #ExcellentShow Dr. Gates #ThankYou for your work and sharing your gifts with humanity! May you have a MILLION more seasons! Much love from Canada! 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦
Finding your Roots is one of the only TV shows worth watching. Doing my own geneology research was truly a humbling experience. We owe so much to the people who came before us for their incredibly selfless sacrifices.
Dr. Gates is the ULTIMATE OF INTELLECTUAL SOULS!!! Who wouldn't wanna learn FROM Him?!! Sir, From this Humble Corner, RESPECT and Thanks for All You Are and Do. #ViewNation #IntellectualRoot. #MasterofRoots!!!
*Dr. Gates for those who don’t know is immensely knowledge in history. There’s a documentary called The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song that’s incredibly powerful. Highly recommend checking it out.*
I showed this documentary to my sophomores (mostly 97% white) and they sure did learn alot about the REAL history of the Black Church, nothing watered down for them.
I would love to find out more about my family. I never met any of my grandfathers. They both passed at a young age. My grandmother on my father side passed at 40 and my mom parents passed at a very young age, and all six of her siblings were in foster care and separated, so she doesn’t even know them, I would pay $1 million if I had it to know more about my family just to know their names would bring us so much joy
Cool that Dr. Gates will cover two Canadians this year Alanis Morrisette (born in Ottawa) and Brendan Fraser (father is Canadian, Brendan born in the US but has dual citizenship - he got some of his education at UCC in Toronto)

My favorite distant cousin match is the Bernie Sanders/Larry David, especially because right before he turned the page for the reveal he was all smiley and saying he hoped it would be an athlete.
My family received 160 acres each in Oklahoma because they were enslaved by the Muskogee Creek Indians and once the 1866 treaty was signed they became Creek citizens. So the 5 civilized tribes gave enslaved Africans land in Oklahoma, this is why there was so many thriving all black towns in Oklahoma at the turn of the century.
Thanks to Dr. Henry Louis Gates, and his program #FindingYourRoots I'm learning more about the importance of family history as well as asking older family members to share their stories. I really need his help in finding info on my maternal great-grandmother background. Thanks to #TheView for this segment. #DNA
I’m glad he’s doing this for black folks bc our story is unique a lot of us are descendants of slaves. Our ancestors didn’t ask to be here nor were they refugees or migrated here. By design our ancestors was the only group that was forced and tortured to lose all knowledge of their culture.
Amazing that Whoopi descended from folks who got 104 acres, which is what they asked for. She seemed rather pleased and surprised to learn who her DNA cousin was
I wish this interview were longer. I really love what Joy Behar said, people selectively forget North America was "founded" by immigrants. No one should be telling anyone, "Go Back To Your Country." The only ones who can say the land is theirs are the American Indians.
Dr. Henry Louis Gates and "Finding Your Roots" was the inspiration that pushed me to take a deeper dive into DNA testing. I'm literally sitting on the edge of my chair through every episode waiting for the final reveal. The best TV series I've seen!
“And what happened to that?” Sunny, what happened was… our friend Abe was murdered. And his vision for reconstruction went to the grave with him. Such a shame.
The Homestead Acts were several laws in the United States by which an applicant could acquire ownership of government land or the public domain, typically called a homestead. In all, more than 160 million acres (650 thousand km2; 250 thousand sq mi) of public land, or nearly 10 percent of the total area of the United States, was given away free to 1.6 million homesteaders; most of the homesteads were west of the Mississippi River. An extension of the homestead principle in law, the Homestead Acts were an expression of the Free Soil policy of Northerners who wanted individual farmers to own and operate their own farms, as opposed to Southern slave owners who wanted to buy up large tracts of land and use slave labor, thereby shutting out free white farmers. For a number of years individual Congressmen put forward bills providing for homesteading, but it wasn't until 1862 that the first homestead act was passed. The Homestead Act of 1862 opened up millions of acres. Any adult who had never taken up arms against the federal government of the United States could apply. Women and immigrants who had applied for citizenship were eligible. Several additional laws were enacted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Southern Homestead Act of 1866 sought to address land ownership inequalities in the south during Reconstruction. It explicitly included Black Americans and encouraged them to participate, and, though rampant discrimination, systemic barriers, and bureaucratic inertia considerably slowed Black gains,[3] the 1866 law was part of the reason that within a generation after its passage, by 1900, one quarter of all Southern Black farmers were farm owners. The Timber Culture Act of 1873 granted land to a claimant who was required to plant trees-the tract could be added to an existing homestead claim and had no residency requirement. The Kinkaid Amendment of 1904 granted a full section-640 acres (260 ha)-to new homesteaders settling in western Nebraska. An amendment to the Homestead Act of 1862, the Enlarged Homestead Act, was passed in 1909 and doubled the allotted acreage from 160 to 320 acres (65 to 129 ha) in marginal areas. Another amended act, the national Stock-Raising Homestead Act, was passed in 1916 and granted 640 acres (260 ha) for ranching purposes. Source Wikipedia

It doesn't cost anywhere near what you'd pay to do an Ancestry DNA test! Get a test for your mother to do!
You can go to your local library and do the ancestry online.
