Another long comment from me. lol What amazes me about these dolls in comparison to today's dolls is that they are play-line swimsuit dolls usually the cheapest of the bunch. And they have bathing suits and accessories and beautiful hair and faces, legs that bend and click and a stand. A stand, on a play-line swimsuit doll, that is that nice of quality. Now we get dolls that don't bend and the most basic of outfits and no stand even with the Fashionistas that all they can do is stand and pose, still no stand. I know comparing now to then is comparing apples to oranges and it's not likely to ever come back. But seeing these today really makes that so clear. This line of dolls were in the stores when I first started collecting in 2003. I liked them, and even the feet which some people said looked like flippers and I laughed at that. But for beach dolls their feet made sense and looked comfortable and natural running through the sand into the water. I have some of these dolls and I really liked the Teresa face mold in this line, she was very pretty. I think the scent they are supposed to smell like is their coconut scented suntan lotion. I especially liked Blaine's looks. He was much more handsome than the Ken face mold of the time which looked kind of dorky, and he was dressed sharp for beachwear. I didn't like that Barbie and Ken were supposed to have broken up so she could date Blaine. That seemed unnecessary, he could have dated one of the other pretty dolls in the line. I know Mattel was trying to keep Barbie current and interesting during some pretty competitive times with the new Bratz dolls at that time. So that is probably why they did that publicity stunt. It's funny I can't hardly believe that was 15 years ago now. I still miss the Barbie Bazaar mags I used to read back then, and the beautiful dolls they came out with in those early new millennium years. Their faces were really amazing and the quality was so nice. Back then none of us could predict that just 15 years later we'd simply be grateful that Mattel was still making Barbie and friends dolls. Seeing these from the year I first started collecting officially, it makes me sad. Our hobby isn't growing though just a few years back during the height of M.H.and E.A.H. popularity it seemed to be having a wonderful growth spurt. With new young collectors that were drawn to the hobby by those fantastically accessorized and detailed dolls. Sorry to sound a bit pessimistic but I am still unhappy about losing Toys R Us also. Still, enjoyed seeing these dolls that were new and in the stores when I was new to and enthused in my hobby. Those were good, coconut scented times. ;-)
I love the Cali Girl Barbies! Their clothes are really nice, especially for beach dolls. I would love to get Christie, Steven (he's adorable) and Summer someday. The dolls from the mid-2000s are really great quality in general and they had such awesome clothes. I wish Mattel would make Barbies like them again.
One of the reasons I love your channel is that you keep showing us these gorgeous Barbies that I am not aware of! I've learned about so many different ones from your channel and has made collecting even more fun for me, so thank you for taking time each week to share your collection and hauls with us! :-). The Cali dolls are lovely!! I love Christie and Teresa. Going to check eBay, lol.
I feel disappointed because I never saw a store in my country selling the Steven, and the Cali Guy is a doll that I really would like to have, I love his style :/
