How To PROPERLY Fix G35 / 350z Oil Consumption

  • This is the right way to fix oil consumption on an Infiniti g35 and Nissan 350z. An oil catch can or pcv delete is only a temporary band aid fix to the problem. If you're loosing oil, check for leaks first.

    In regards to BMWs, the M54 engine has low tension piston rings. Excessive oil consumption is also concerned on those engines I own one of them. One of the fixes is replacing the piston rings with the older style piston rings with a smaller Gap. The other fix is a $2 piece of vacuum hose which connects to the back of the manifold and down to the PCV or they call it the crankcase ventilation valve CCV. What this does is it increases vacuum pressure in the crankcase sucking the piston rings the low tension rings to the size of the cylinder and scraping the oil off. I went from burning 1 quart of oil every 300 miles to 1 quart of oil every 3000 miles. So the idea behind using a catch can is similar but really what you should be doing is increasing your crankcase vacuum pressure

    Finally, a video that accurately describes why these cars lose oil. Yep, it's the piston rings. Problem is, these cars were *designed* to lose oil through the rings. It was done to decrease friction and improve gas mileage. Not a very well thought out solution, but there it is. Great vid. Subscribed.

I'm starting to get a lot of the same problems in my '05 (Window Motor, Gas Gauge, Cam Sensors, Bushings/suspension blow, rust on all four corners - my fault - rough idle etc). Somehow my gas mileage is still pretty decent, though. When the time comes that I have enough money to start fixing her back up, I'm not sure if I want to chase the problems until they are all fixed and still end up with a VQ block or just throw the damn thing away and put an LS series in. Might cost more upfront but seems like there'd be way more attainable horsepower with fewer problems down the road...

    I know it's the same with the Chevrolet LS1 or LM7 V8 engines where people have fitted catch cans to mask an oil consumption problem.
    It has either been a badly baffled valve rocker cover or worn piston rings,Holden replaced or rebuilt the 5.7 litre V8s in 1999 under warranty when they first fitted them if they consumed 1.5+ litres within a 10,000 kilometre service interval,they had a piston skirt to cylinder bore clearance issue in a batch of them which were shipped to Australia.

My question is more if it's valves or piston rings.. Any idea? Seems to throw puffs of smoke at random times when giving it gas. It does have test pipes and It doesn't seem to be smoking most of the time which is weird especially with the test pipes.

    • @OPDrags

      Definitely piston rings. However I would go through and check everything before taking it to that step. Check the pcv, check valve covers, rear seal, ect. Those will also make you lose oil. But most of the time it's been shown to be the rings

    Yup, I saw that video about the catch can, I almost peed my pants from laughing so hard, you can't stop oil consumption using a catch can. You can slow it down by changing to high mileage oil, and trying different brands till you find one that your engine likes, but that's great for minor oil usage, but it won't do much if it's burning a lot of oil, then the only solution is new rings and new valve seals, but if you're getting that far into the engine you might as well rebuilt it completely.

    Just rebuilt a custom vq35rev up for 10K with all performance parts and she burns oil still! Likely the valve guide seals/valve stem seals on the heads. only smokes on start up due to the oil leaking into the pistons from the heads, when cooled down the vlave guide seals dont retain oil properly if worn out!

    Hey man, you still rocking the breather filter? Had any problems with it? How often do you change your oil? Have you noticed your engine building up any sludge in any way due to all the contaminents (Moist, fuel etc) that will be left in the engine due to blowby since the vacuum that should be there pulling the bad stuff out of the engine and burning it, is now gone? :P

    • @OPDrags

      @@OPDrags alright, cheers man! :) I tried the breather filter for a lil while, drilled the pcv valve and noticed a BIG difference in oil consumtion since obviously i have ALOT of blowby oil from my piston rings that would normaly just pass throu the pcv/plenum and be burned away... This breather filter fix was perfect as it could just get rid of the pressure being created in the engine and get the oil to drip back in the oilpan instead of burning it away... But as i said, i'm afraid to harm the engine in the longrun and i've heard some ppl say that it's bad to remove the vacuum that will get the contaminated vapors away that wil be left inside the enginebay with this fix... what's your thoughts about this? :) i love my car and i would like to keep it for a very long time.. (had it for 5 years already).. it's a 350z -06 revup, @ around 70k miles so far.

    • @OPDrags
      @OPDrags  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly while youre driving a lot of air goes through the engine bay so I wouldn't worry about the possibility of sucking in the vapors. I havent noticed my air filter getting oily or anything from the years of me having this done. I also have hood spacers so even at idle as well heat/vapors escapes the engine bay and doesnt get trapped

    Ok. You’re partially right on the way a dealership would deal with it.
    The reason they would replace the engine is because the problem of the piston rings not lasting expected service life is the key problem. The only way to undo that is to replace the engine.
    I’m sure that I know who the TH-camr is. He’s fixing 50% of the problem. The reason “blow-by” even gets to the plenum is through the PCV system.
    You tell me how it gets there without gas/oil/etc. vapor recirculating into the plenum and throttle body WITHOUT going through the PCV system- you can’t. It doesn’t.
    This engine was designed to use oil as a protective way of decreasing wear, however the piston rings didn’t have as predictive wear that was expected. This is also how some Turbos and Superchargers work as well. There is alternate ways to accomplish the same goal, however, very common.
    Sorry, but this isn’t accurate either.

  • @dominicbarile
    @dominicbarile 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I think youre a little confused on this topic. Oil consumtion can be caused by a number of things. Worn piston rings, Leaking valve guide seals, or through the PCV system. The Common "Oil Consumption" Issue with the 05-07 G35s is caused by the PCV system, which causes the engine to burn oil through the intake, not past the piston rings. On MOST cars, piston rings are the main cause of oil consumption. That is not the case for the Rev Up VQ Engine. Not sure where you are getting your info from.

    • @OPDrags
      @OPDrags  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The PCV system is the same through nonrev and revups. So why would it that be a cause only in revups? lol I said in the video that deleting the system helps and is recommended but its not a fix. As I also said in the video, one of the best and well known VQ tuners commented on the subject as well. I ALSO said in the video that other things can cause it. My information is from G35Driver and My350z from years ago on the subject of oil consumption which I ALSO AGAIN stated in the video. Please next time watch the video and do your own research haha
      If it was caused by the PCV system, then why would owners get their engines replaced under warranty by Nissan/Infiniti? I think the dealership would've much rather replaced a PCV system than a whole engine. Just my thoughts though

    • @eli_rivera96
      @eli_rivera96 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. Faulted piston rings from factory. The habitual occurance of oil burning/loss causes premature wear to cylinder wall and crank due to low oil inevitably leading into a rod knock or engine failure. Plus your cam solenoid are based off oil pressure. If you understand how to read japanese you can find better results supporting these statements or just know anything about nissan in general.
