  • Fiji is known as being an expensive honeymoon destination, but I went as a solo backpacker, and I’m going to show you how much is ACTUALLY costs to visit Fiji.
I am doing a full Fiji budget breakdown of exactly how much I spent while I was there, and how much different things cost me. I visited both the mainland and the Yasawa Island chain. If you wanting to go on a Fiji vacation, I think you’ll find this travel guide useful!
Fiji is cheaper than you think, I think the video will surprise you!

I backpacked as a solo traveller there as part of my RTW trip, fell in love with a Fijian athlete(my first love) and stayed for 6 months. Then went back again after NZ and in Oz(on a working holiday visa). Went back to Fiji for another 3 months then left on a yacht from Lautoka to the Bay of Islands, NZ. Crewing is very possible if you time it right. Fiji is calling me again. would love to visit with my husband. I love the idea of backpacking again but don't think I could do the dorm thing anymore. I've done that. If we had the dorm to ourselves then YES! Backpackers with basic double rooms would be better. Now stuck in the UK. Need to do another RTW trip! So lucky to have travelled so much but still want more!

Thank you! I think how safe it is, will depend on where you are in Fiji. In the hostels on the islands and on the coral coast I felt perfectly safe leaving my valuables out. However, I didn't feel that way at the hostel in Nadi, I actually never even brought my laptop out because I didn't feel safe with it out. I also didn't feel very safe in Suva. Make sure you go in the the peak of summer (July) if you want to see the manta rays! The last homestay was on the last island with the blue lagoon. The first homestay did not have any kayaks, but everyone else had kayaks. You can take them out free of charge! All of the resorts should have kayaks, but not all the homestays will.

still not expensive - it could just be that they are going to luxury tourist areas and also they are comparing to local prices of a developing country
or you were talking to backpacker types who are use to developing country prices - fiji is poor although people think it’s expensive place because the corporate resorts are expensive- because they lease out the entire private island areas where no local life is to be seen

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you SO much! I have a couple of questions -- did you meet any older backpackers? How well would a 50-year-old fit in? And what about tipping? Is it expected and if so, how much? Again, many thanks! I was thinking I'd go to Hawaii first and then Fiji, but maybe I'll just skip Hawaii since I've been before, and head straight to Fiji. Happy trails!

    • @passportoadventure
      @passportoadventure  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi! I did meet a few older travelers, but I would say most backpackers were late twenties to mid thirties. When I was there it wasn't an 18 year old backpacker vibe, people were a bit older. If I remember correctly, I did tip. I would say tipping small amounts is normal, it's not US tipping culture. But something to research more, this video is from last year so I don't remember exactly how much I was tipping.
You're welcome! If you are island hopping that can add up. The ferry is pretty expensive, but if you limit the islands you visit and do homestays instead of resorts it can save tons of money!

Thank you! And it is much harder to get there by private boats. I know some of the homestay islands have private boats and can pick you up/drop you off, but it's a lot more expensive. The ferries are the hardest part, because that is the most expensive part of the whole trip! Most people get the Bula Pass. I didn't, I just booked my ferries individually. Depending on how many stops you have, it may be cheaper to book the legs individually instead of going for the pass. But if you plan to visit a lot of islands, then the pass would be worth it!

Oh… reminds me of my younger years… and decided I wanted more than hostels in europe at $5/night… decided to focus on my career… retired at 49, got scuba certified and immediately booked a trip to Fiji… it’s exceeded my dreams and have been back several times… and I just booked at a resort in the Mamanucas at a very expensive rate… now, don’t get me wrong I do miss my bumming around days and getting knee deep in with the locals. But the high-end resort experiences have been an emotional experience without compare, and the eco resorts have amazing programs that get you hands on in the preservation process…. I don’t regret the years of sacrifice and focus to get where I am now. Bula and vinaka… Fiji never leaves you wanting… that said, I would advise avoiding the “family” focused resorts on the mainland… get out to the Mamanucas or the Yasawas… you will not be disappointed

Well i was here in fiji 1989 for the first time and after my retirement 10 years ago im living here in savusavu with no intention at al leaving again .... in other words: i found my personal paradise
Fiji: you like it or leave it.... some of us expatriots are living here for 30 years or more.
My cost of living pm are appr. Euro 1.100 which includes everything like car, rent , food and believe it or not a small motorboat how is that ? and Fiji is according to Tammy who is from the us its not to compare at all with hawaii where she is also living every now and then
Anyhow: its a really really great documentary about fiji

Savusavu Bay is beautiful. Back in the day I stayed with the Whippys and the Manuels there. Cried buckets when eventually I had to leave Fiji because I couldn't extend my visa any further. If you know how I can get in touch with Ida & Tom Whippy please let me know. I spent an entire month in their home! I'd like to send them something as a gift. What to send?

Love this vlog, do you have a list of each of these places you stayed on a vlog or something? We are going in ten days and want to do it super organically like this with homestays etc. I went there years ago and stayed in resorts and although it was gorgeous and relaxing, i feel like I missed the fun stuff and authentic stuff.

Hi! Sorry I should have put the info in the description! The first homestay was iMerry's homestay on Wai Lai Lai. I can't remember the name of the second homestay, but it was on the island with the blue lagoon. This is the last island in the Yasawas. I think it is the only homestay on the island. The hostel I stayed in on the islands was Barefoot Manta, and if you are going to stay in a resort I recommend this one! It had a strong community feel to it. And of course you get to see manta rays! All of the homestays can be found on Airbnb, so you can read reviews and browse for ones that sound good to you :)

Great Video..I so want to go, but for a family of 4, it would'nt be cheap..Im approx 7, 363 miles away..However my wife and kids are from Philippines, and we do travel there..I highly recommend going there..My favorite place is WHITE SANDS BEACH , Puerto Gallera..You can also choose your pricing, from High end to lower end..Its very affordable, and so dam beautiful..We stay at" Crystals Place" right on the Beach in the top room..I think we paid 67.00 a night USD, and it was absolutley beautiful..

I travel alone so it is much easier for me! I imagine going with kids would be way more expensive. Especially if you do the resorts. If you don't do the resorts though, it can be much cheaper.
I have been to the Philippines and absolutely loved it! It is so incredibly beautiful! I have a ton of YT shorts on the Philippines and the full length video will be coming out shortly! We plan to make a lot of trips out there in the future as well! My finaces family is from there!

I have a hearing impairment and the background music makes it difficult to understand you. I tried the auto generated subtitles but I can not keep up with reading.
