I am surprised by the number of seemingly negative comments. As the video's title states, this is a "concept," one which will likely be refined to real-world conditions. I applaud Volvo for at least trying to come up with something that takes the process of paving roads into the 21st century.
This paving concept is based, in great part, on equipment and material technologies that have yet to be developed. We believe that the empty pod weight should be light enough so that the load it imposes on the pavement surface will be similar to the load from the human foot walking across the pavement. Regarding positioning of the full pods:Our industry already uses GPS for a multitude of applications. We plan for the paving system to include precise placement of the pod using this technique.

Looks like a wonderful machine, but I have a few questions. Would the asphalt that comes out of the machine be cold straight away? If not wouldn't this be a problem with the pods? And how do you get the pods on and off the trucks? If by crane then you wouldn't have them placed exactly onto the correct position, you could prevent this by making the ramp wider at the start then it wouldn't be such a problem. Also if you had the asphalt itself painted it wouldn't be as slippery as road paint is now
I'm 18 and I hope to see these things with in the next 10 to 20 years mainly to see how this will decrees traffic congestion on highways due to the modern asphalt pavers.

One square yard of asphalt that is 1 inch thick weighs 110 pounds, so 36 inches thick is 3,960 pounds per cubic yard, which is nearly 2 tons. SO Im not the best at math, but im pretty sure those pods have to be hugh to hold 17 tons of asphalt? I could be wrong. Someone smarter do the math. Let us know
I drove my self bat shit crazy figuring, acre feet of water, then converting a cubic foot of water into gallons,I visualized a 12x12x12 inch, cube,, and all the charts, engineering data state it holds, approx. 7.5 gallonsI said no way, my little one gallon plastic gas can, is very close to that measure, it holds one gallon, I refused to believe it, the entire weighs and measure system must be wrong, hahaha, I still don't believe it,, my friend.43,560 sq. ft to an acre, covered in water one foot high, answer converts to cubic, = 43,560 cubic feet of water, one gallon multiplied by approx. 7.5 gallons per cubic foot. gives you gallons per acre. I need to have a perfect cube fabricated, hahahahaha,, with a filler hole in it, fill the stupid thing, dump it into a measuring device to measure gallons. think about my dilemma, reply back,, hope you got a laugh from it.
not getting the pods, how do u reuse the pods, and what kinda of trucks haul the pods or how do they get filled up. Seems good in theory but still looks like it has a lot to work on. Glad to see they are trying to make changes in the business though
The pods have those health-and-safety lights on the back, but what or they for? To warn traffic? There can't be any traffic while it is paving, as the cars would constantly have an empty pod in the way.
Hrm ... the solar cells are silly, they don't produce enough power to make a real impact, compaired to their complexity and added weight. The Pod system is iffy, at best, and just adds to the complexity of the whole machine. Would probably be better and easier to have a larger fleet of truck to deliver the asphalt, probably more ecologically friendly too. One thing I do like though, is that it can paint the road while laying it down, that's a good idea. Same with the hydrogen fuel cell.

the end shows the machine grabs full "containers" as it proceeds and leaves behind the empty ones (if i understood correctly) but this wouldn't be possible in czech republic, if you left the containers in place they would've been stolen the other day...
Some of these comments are just plain idiotic. Clearly this is a concept, and I think a rather good one. People don't want to work in construction like they used to. This is the future. Like it or not. That may be 100 years from now, but it's coming sooner than later. This is a great concept for interstates and highway paving.
very interesting idea but I have been a tri-Axel driver and this is not a good concept number one as said already a truck has 2 bring the pods... number two nowhere for a roller to compact the fresh blacktop unless I missed something in that video about the pave doing both jobs.... number 3 that's gotta be some strange paint to be put down on 200 degree blacktop?
I like the part in the video when it shows a heads up display... Compaction at 98%= failed road. Neat concept and I would love to run it but there are just too many issues that this machine doesn't address. There is a reason why HMA paving machines have changed very little in the last 50 years.

As a easy example the pods themselves would increase cost. Simple analysis of the technique would show you that a truck would have to drop these pods onto the site so no savings since a dump truck does the same job AND mult others with out the cost of proprietary pods that only serve one function.

It remains to be determined but honestly, someone needs to put and take away those containers from there and that someone implies lots of trucks which consume huge amounts of gas. No one cares about a new technology if it is not cheaper too.

Ok guys, I pave all day every day, this is a total crock, it will never replace a truck with a driver. It would be better if VCE looked at integrating gps with real time correction or total stations for auto laying, followed by auto rollers. Your designer while admirable in their brief needs to study the paving process in detail to determine where efficiencies can be achieved at the lowest additional incremental cost for the conctractor/client.

It would never work the hot asphalt would destroy the paint also no rolling from the steam rollers means no compaction of the asphalt and solar panels in night time operations would be useless also if the machine gets hard asphalt in it and drags a peace or more than one peace for a long period of time with out any human support the whole job is messed up this thing looks as bad as the one man pothole machine
