I've own 2 of these and learned how to edit on these. By far one the best reel to reels to work on. But I'm missing the sleeve for the speed. Anyone know where I can find one. Thanks good video
It's a good machine, I own one. But, that said, it lacks many of the internal trimmer controls necessary to set it up for the flattest possible response. This is not uncommon in lower-cost machines, but a machine costing "four or five times as much" would likely have all the controls needed to set it up as well as possible. And if the recording sounds better, then the recorder is not doing its job. The recorder should make no changes to the sound at all.
No Dolby? No problem--if you don't mind using some digital technology...there's an open-source Free Pascal program that will take a dry audio file and make it into the sound of a Dolby B recording, record that signal onto your AKAI GX-4000D. To play back, digitize the signal from the AKAI GX-4000D and run it through the program in decode mode....with a little calibration you will get even more dynamic range...
Alan Argotti As for new tape RTM SM 900 or the SM 911, I’ve had great results with both. All old tape is a crap shoot but the one brand you absolutely want to stay away from is Ampex 456. Sheds like crazy no matter what year it was made.
Alan Argotti A77s can be tough to get right. A lot of the parts are reaching their lifespan. I had an A77 mk4 for a while but I kept having to get it serviced. I finally sold it and now have a B77 MKII and absolutely love it!!
It's good that you used a song from the golden age when mixtapes were round instead of square--from the Fall Of Rome to the reign of King Arthur Uther Pendragon, Swordbearer Of Druids, and Conan The Barbarian. Pro tip: When you go to listening to the tape that you just recorded and it ends up sounding better than the input signal, that means that the bias point of the tape that you are recording on is higher than what the recorder is set to. In other words, the tape is too magnetically 'hard' and has too high a coercivity relative to what the recorder is set for. Of course, if you are making a tape recorded off of your friend's tape deck which was recorded from an 8-track tape where the matchbook is inserted in the wrong place...this is just what the doctor ordered...
