I think it's something similar to Cilantro. It takes specific taste buds to be able to detect the pleasing flavor compounds in it, and those flavors get interpreted as something completely different and foreign without them. We can gain the compatible taste buds by eating it consistently, but it's a catch 22. Gotta eat it to like it and you gotta like it to eat it.
I know you probably won't see this but I went to that same torture museum in Prague. We went a couple of months ago and it also had a wax museum that was apart of it. Was definitely a great place to visit.

I've got a funny story about grape tomatoes. A few years ago my family went to dinner at a friends house. When we were eating I found a grape tomato on my plate in the salad, I picked it up and bit it but half of the grape tomato was in my mouth and the other half wasn't. When I bit it the tomato the half outside my mouth exploded and tomato pulp went everywhere. It got on our friends hair, my dads shirt and some of of it had miraculously reached the ceiling. I was mortified but I also learned a lesson: when eating a grape tomato make sure the whole tomato is in your mouth.

Link, I have the same exact tomato (non) preference as you. Terrible in their native form, but when transformed into sauce, ketchup... delicious!
