i8 question for you. what are your thoughts on the skinny front wheels? Do you know what size rims comfortably could replace them? rear too. safe to go a half inch wider on both? if so what brands
Pat buddy! I just gave you a great idea, you should wait until the EV version of the BMW I8 comes out in the near-future and buy one of those! It’ll be little to no cost on emissions lol less headache for both you & Rich hahahahaha!
For the longest the i8 has been the dream but after so many problem videos looks like a real money pit, even worse is how BMW seems to handle some of these issues. I know some people had to fight to get their windshield replaced from the known crack.
Remove the trim under the corner of the bumper and it will expose the horn. I have a video on TH-cam for how to install front splitters on the i8. I remove that exact trim when I install the splitters. So, this should help.
BMW dealer: We will not fix the i8 RIch: Buys a Porsche instead Porsche should make a sign board at that BMW dealer "Can't Fix them Buy A Porsche Instead"
Wow Pat, the i8's are an incredible vehicle, but they're obviously also a double-edged sword if you will. You've helped so many owners out and hopefully you'll continue to do. As the Beetles put to song, you get by with a little help from your friends. Stay the course my friend. Save the Wave 🙋♂
Hello! Can you please make a video on how to replace a rear tail light, I have 2016 i8 tail light condensation in it. if you have instructions, that would be best. Thanks.
Sadly, I could find no documentation to answer this. It's a transaxle so the differential is built into the transmission. I have not experienced free wheeling when driving my i8. So, I assume it is limited slip.
@@PatsGarageOnline thanks for the answer I could not find it either searched forums and Google and even watched videos of cars spinning the wheels and even from your video where your partner drifts in the snow their was no one wheel spinning up seemed both were. Love your videos too so helpful thanks again 👌
@@PatsGarageOnline i saw when you mentioned the mini jcw trans which is what you said you looked up the process to changed the trans fluid in the i8. If it is the same. The jcw mini states it has an lsd.
I have not verified that boost pressure changed. According to the tuner, the i8 is designed to pull more power from the electric motor during low speeds for fuel economy. The tune tells the engine that there is no motor so it needs to do all the work. So you get more power from the engine
@@PatsGarageOnline Thanks for the reply. One more question, being a direct injection engine, did you see any room to install a catch can to keep the back of the valves from getting carbon buildup?
@@brucepeterson3246 There is no room for that but the intake manifold has its own mechanisms that resemble catch cans. One for low throttle and one for high throttle. I trust them.
@@PatsGarageOnline Thank you so much Pat. Your videos on the i8 are the best collection available on the Internet. You should be proud of that along with my gratitude. I plan to buy an i8 in the near future. My daughter lives in Maryland and on my next visit, I would like to come see you.
My car had a similar issue. Something calle a Battery safety module died. Ill have to confirm with bmw what exactly its called. That module fried and killed the HV batteries. Or there wss an issue with the HV batteries and the module popped to save the other electronics. Bmw cant tell wich as all are bad. So as per bmw 8 year warranty on HV batteries its all being replaced in my car. Also all the parts are on back order so... I probably wont have my car for months...
Hey pat quick question if you can help as I just bought one of these I8s. I have a radar detector plugged in and it seems to always stay on if the car is charging. If it is not charging it powers down after 5 or so minutes. Is this normal and should I unplug it if I am going to be charging the vehicle so I am not draining the cars battery? I don’t want to walk out one day and I can’t turn it on haha.
They don't have to. And it concerns me because once all the cars are out of warranty, is BMW going to turn their back on the i8? We NEED BMW because many shops won't even touch the car.

Pat, you are the best and it is so cool to see Rich too, but you are such a genuine dude. The i8 does look very cool. and "market adjustment" hahahah
Thank you!
Don't modify cars unless you got a mechanic that can work on modified cars.
Was watching on Rich's channel...now Im here... Pat, bro, ur a genuine guy...keep going my guy
Thank you!

Haha!! No headaches from BMW. LMAO!!
Man makes me reconsider spending them big bucks!!! Can’t lease them anymore
I’m guessing BMW doesn’t really know how to fix the I8. They probably hoping it goes away. You should buy a Raptor to tune up next.

My windshield cracked just sitting in my garage early in my ownership.
I personally love that pretty GT4, God she sounds nasty!

Can you try another bmw dealership? I used to take mine to bmw warwick in RI after buying it in sudbury.
He has to replace the battery.. THE BIG BATTERY! It goes out every 7 years. It’s gonna be about 15-$20k
The high voltage battery is warranted to 10 years. If it was the big battery that would be a free swap

If you use the power port under the glove box it should stay powered up. The high voltage battery charges the 12v battery so it shouldn't die
