I was thinking the exact same thing! Why on earth did they choose a smaller diesel for a *_mid-size_* SUV? Even the Chevy Cruze had a 2 liter diesel, and that's a *_compact_* sedan.
So far over 22k trouble-free miles on my ‘18 diesel since last May with an overall hand-calculated average of 40.4 mpg at a 75% Highway/25% City split. Have zero issues passing people at highway speeds even when loaded up with people and/or cargo (especially through the mountains), and still easily obtain low to mid 40 mpg while cruising at 75 mph. Best tankful to date is 48.6 mpg poking along at 72 mph during one of the multiple road trips we take annually, but the most impressive result was an almost 3,500 mile trip last summer from Ohio to Florida and back with the Terrain loaded up to 4,700# GVW with us and all of our stuff (Cat Scale verified), cruising at 75 mph the entire trip with the AC blasting for comfort, and still managed a 41 mpg average when it was over.
Zvonimir Zgonc The engine is turbo charged so it packs quite a punch. Surprised me when I tested it and it accelerates quite well when merging on to the highway.

I don't understand why GM had to put this tiny low HP engine in the Terrain instead of the 2.8 diesel with 200 HP from the Chevy Colorado pickup. It would've done 60 at least 1-2 seconds faster with that and the fuel economy wouldn't be much different. Seriously, why GM? It doesn't make any sense! This engine is for a small hatchback, like a Chevy Cruze, not a large SUV.
It's pretty large. By modern standards it is in the compact class, but vehicles have grown so much in size in past decades it is pretty large by normal standards. Compare it to compact SUVs from 20 years ago. Compare the Toyota RAV-4 or Honda CRV from the 90s to today. They have all gotten large and fat and such a small 136 HP engine isn't going to be fast in one.

Well, it might not be large by your ridiculous American standards but it is pretty large in reality. It's 4630 mm long. My 1997 Volvo V40, which is quite a long car, is 4480 mm long. The Terrain weighs over 3800 lbs. Don't you think that's quite a lot of weight for 136 HP. The acceleration is pretty good considering the weight.
I love the the "no shifter " buttons . Nothing to get in my way of putting coffee cups - mine on my side and wife's on hers - easy! It's the simple things that make life better :>)

A question no on asked is not exactly accurate. With autonomous driving on the horizon, you will have to have a gear selector like this that all electronic with no traditional shift lever, and we will be seeing more and more of them as cars are redesigned
@@dvStl You can actually support vehicle selection of transmission position without those stupid looking buttons. Other automakers use a simulated traditional shifter with a flip selector. So yes, push buttons are not necessarily. They would've been better served to use what they use in it's Equinox twin. Furthermore,until autonomy is offered on this vehicle there's no need to implement an autonomy ready shifter. I agree with Mr. Smith. It looks tacky and it serves no purpose at this time.
Better gas mileage than my 2010 Corolla. The 2010 Corolla was one of the most fuel efficient non hybrids of 2010 at 32 mpg avg between city/hwy. Only concern is the price of diesel being about 40 cents more per gallon at the moment in Northeast Ohio.
I have owned my 2018 Denali new since October/September my wife drives it more than I do, and coming from ford, the Gen2 Sport Trac to be exact, It was hard to walk away from such a great midsize truck, and into the Terrain, we don’t mind the shifter as it grows on you, and we haven’t had any problems what’s so ever....
I like this car a lot. Looking to get this or the Equinox with the diesel. My only concern is the auto stop start feature. Heard mixed reviews about it. Wondering how it will do in LA traffic in the city.
I would also think that the start stop would be hard on the turbo since it’s not allowing the oil in the turbo to cool before shutting down. But I’ve also heard there’s a module that you can buy to circumvent the start stop permanently.
Nobody who buys a diesel SUV with fuel economy in mind cares about the 0-60 time. If I owned one I'd just be thankful for the mileage in such a big car.

I like the exterior design. Having a diesel would be nice on my long road trips. Although with my income I would never be able to afford a $32k vehicle. Once it gets down to the high teens on the used market I’ll put the Terrain diesel on my shopping list.
While I would rather have the diesel version, my current ride is a 2017 Chvy Equinox with the 2.4 4 cyl. engine. Just last weekend, I made a 1,021 mile trip with it and achieved an mpg rating of 40 on the hwy. It's such a slow vehicle, I actually hate the thing. But, those mpg numbers are close enough to my VW diesel that it almost makes up for it. Still, if given the opportunity, I would certainly get the diesel over the gas version any day.
There are some places a 0-60 time of 10 seconds would pose some discomfort on American on ramps but this time is plenty capable most of the time. There are still a bunch of newer cars that are that slow on the road. Use your blinker and get behind people worst case. Not a biggie for those that are used to taking a breathe.
My wife's 1.6 AWD Ecoboost Escape get's 37mpg on the highway during summer months with winter tires still installed and 4-people in the vehicle. We live in Alaska and this through very hilly terrain. Our best on level ground and a warm day was 42mpg for about 100 miles - including tailwind :-) However, before this Escape was broken-in (not talking about 800 mile break-in), it would only get a mix of 22 mpg (27 mpg last winter with 60% city driving). Somewhere around the 8-10k mile mark is when it seemed to have more power and became much more efficient. I wonder what these GM diesel's will get once broken-in? I bet people will se around 45-50 mpg on the highway.
Have done multiple long road trips with mine and love it. Longest one was last summer and totaled just under 3,500 miles fully loaded with passengers and cargo, with lots of mountain driving, and cruising at 75 mph with the AC blasting the entire trip. Still managed 40.8 mpg overall, and have recorded several tankfuls between 45-48 mpg driving that fast when just myself and my wife riding around.
I've been looking around for an eventual replacement for my Acura TSX sedan - wanting something with a hatch and AWD. I'm considering small SUVs but also now intrigued by some wagon models, but not luxury ones. Besides Subarus, there is the Golf Alltrak and Buick Regal TourX. It's interesting that the Golf Alltrak has about the same cargo room as this Terrain with seats up and down. Sure, the rear seat leg room might be a bit tighter. But why drive a large vehicle if it doesn't do anything for you. Some may like the view and actually use the extra ground clearance at times, including me, but 99%+ of the time being on the road, I would prefer the better handling of a car, considering I'm coming from the sporty Acura. Not saying this Terrain or SUVs are bad, just struggling trying to find something that I'm happy driving to work 30 miles each way that can also hold my stuff when I go camping.
A great looking vehicle but would have put in this vehicle the 2.0.litre turbo diesel engine with the 9 speed automatic transmission and offered the straight six duromax diesel as optional choice, again with the 9 speed automatic transmission? A great combination ☺️? Power with economy. On both engine's, perfect.
If GM equipped the GMC Terrain with the same engine as the 2014 Cruze TD (2.0L), it will consist of 151hp and 264lb/ft. of torque. For the Terrain, that would equate to about 25 City / 35 Highway
Hey at the very least drop that baby Duramax 2.8 I4 in the Acadia or the bigger SUV in the line. There is a biturbo version of the same engine in Europe GM’s.
Clicked on this as I'm looking at things to eventually replace the wife's CX-5, saw the shifter and went nope! I like the diesel, I like the GMC styling, would never get that shifter. I specifically bought the CX-5 because of the 6 speed auto with a regular shifter.
First thing that makes me have a 1.6L diesel engine is something from the European market, like a Skoda Octavia or Peugeot 208. Not a GMC Terrain. But still with mpg in mind, I would not mind owning one for long trips.
Melissa Bartlett GM builds very reliable diesels and they have a global engine division in Turin, Italy which specializes in diesels among other things.
The energy density of diesel fuel is about 23% greater than gasoline, so when you compare similar diesel/gas fuel economies...you'll typically note that the diesels are that 23% better. There's no real magic with diesels. You trade the faster, higher revving combustion (typically requiring spark ignition control, though that's finally starting to change with HCCI stuff) of a shorter carbon, lower-energy-density hydrocarbon for the slower, lower revving combustion that works uses high pressures to induce ignition without a spark that uses the longer carbon, higher-energy-density hydrocarbon of diesel. You could go even farther in the long chain direction with fuel oil, wax, and coal (those latter ones would almost certainly have to be external combustion, aka boiler, engines), or in the short chain direction (propane and natural gas). These different fuels burn at different rates and temperatures and result in different emissions byproducts that have different "pros and cons" on the environment and human health. That's the plain truth. I do wish diesel fuel economy wasn't treated like magic, because it's not.
So instead of putting the 2.8 Duramax engine, which is 181/369, they put a loaded 4x4 people hauler in jeopardy with a 1.6L 137/236? WTH? Why do US manufacturers have to screw everything up before they finally need to be bailed out by the tax payers?

Despite it being a diesel, it still has start-stop, just like the Equinox Diesel. I've seen it on all diesels except for the Cayenne Diesel, but for the ML350 Bluetec and the X3/X5 35d as well as the 328d and 535d. yes. And I know, start-stop is (and has been) the stupidest new feature on new cars these days as of 2019 onwards.
Yea, when I think "professional grade rugged" I always think of a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder noise maker. I hope we get past this tiny "turboed-to-hell-and-back" trend soon. Whoever thought this would be a good idea across the board needs to get acquainted with a firing squad.

One would be better off buying the previous generation Terrain or even a Pontiac Torrent which is no longer made than this underpowered excuse of a vehicle.
I have this car, leased it back in November 2017. Likes: Engine (yes, Diesel), the shifter buttons, style. Dislikes: Pretty much everything else. It's like driving a metal bowl full of marbles. Bad workmanship, materials are not great, spends alot of time in the shop, rough idle, radio system - LOTS and LOTS of problems there. My suggestion, look at anything else.
GMC is an incredible business that mints billions of dollars in profit a year. As you just pointed out, the engineering is minimal and people love buying it. GMC and Chevy Truck are the most important things GM has. Now you know.
The 2018 redesign of the Equinox has one of the best, new car launches as far as quality for the first year. So, no it is not as junkie as the CR-V which has one of the highest repair rates in the segment.

It's a diesel, it makes it's power differently. more usable in the real world than a turbo gas motor. the 9.9 second figure is looong but how often are you pedal to the floor 0-60 in a Terrain? .. I do however believe that someone SHOULD make a tune for this thing asap. GM has a bad habit of electronically sapping the life out of their vehicles. I'd still blow people's doors off in it though lol.

Tiguan TDI wasn’t even available in the U.S., and the best testing with the CX-5 Diesel only shows 34 mpg highway. I’ll keep my Terrain diesel that has no problem getting 40+ mpg at 75 mph while loaded with passengers and full of cargo, and also with full emissions crap intact . If I need to pull tree stumps out and tow heavy loads, I’ll use my truck.
There's absolutely zero need for this wimpy diesel to be in this vehicle. It doesn't even have the best towing capability in its engine lineup. Plus you'll more than likely never recoup to cost of the diesel engine, seeing as diesel is more expensive than gasoline in most areas.
Diesels are not for grocery runs, more for people that do longer distant driving, that would be the only need for this SUV. One advantage I've found is it's a treat not to have to fill the tank so often , especially in inclement weather (VW TDI owner). One main advantage is a potential for a far greater engine life and there is where you may, might, maybe ,(HEH HEH) recoup your investment. Diesel fuel is more expensive but diesels are more efficient so that is a wash. I could be interested in this SUV if it had a bigger diesel and you didn't have to get a fully loaded version just to get the diesel engine. And get rid of the pushbutton transmission ...jeez, wasn't that something Mercury tried in the early 60's....nobody wants that. I think GMC really needs to rethink a few things.
I just gave one example of a brand, but clearly not everybody wants a damn SUV. As really why do you think BMW is selling their normal cars in the US? More SUV models is not making you sell more, it just forces you to enter an already saturated market. Which you won't get into as why would people buy a Hyundai SUV? When they can have a Ford or - even better- a Toyota. Just because corporate thinks that they sell less due to "Not enough SUV RAWR!!" doesn't make it true. The reason Ford doesn't sell as many Sedans and Stations in the USA, compared to VW and BMW, is quality and image. Ford simply doesn't have a good family car image in the USA, which is strange as their European designed family cars are really the same quality as VW if not better in many points. They already are king of the Trucks, so they won't grow there, so they need to aggressively go into the family car market. But that is "HARD!" and CEO's want their bonus "NOW!". Outside of that it is quite clear, not EVERYBODY wants an SUV. But everybody does want quality for a decent price, and that is something where Detroit has seriously been lacking in recent years in their normal cars.
Right, is that why they gave up on selling any car in Europe? Selling off their Opel and Vauxhall brands? Give me a brake, they have been on the retreat for years now. They don't build quality unless it has a huge weight issue with engines that are far to large. SUV's and Trucks are just easier that way, as you can hide weight and engine size problems better in those cars. A varied line up, from SUV to Sedan, is what keeps your customers loyal. There is no "one size fits all". Add to that reliability and decent price and you will claw yourself back from the abyss. But sadly Detroit keeps refusing to accept that, and marches to the tune of "when the saints", to their own demise.

The 2016s had a 305 hp v6, what happened to that? I drove one and was extremely impressed, it had a TON of power

I have the 1.6L diesel 6 speed transmission. To bypass the Auto/Stop feature, I put the car from D to L6. L6 is the same as D

Car and Driver got best in segment 38 mpg in their testing of the diesel Equinox/Terrain.
That mileage is outstanding. Average economy of 34mpg or 7.0 litres/100 kilometres.

2019 was the last year for the Diesel. 2020 was the last year for the 2.0T.

That 2.4 I4 has numerous issues. The most serious is the oil burning.
If you want to save console space, how about you just put the gear lever on the column, as it should be?

GMC needs to bring out a diesel in their hole SUV crossover lineup I would definitely spend my hard-earned money on a Yukon diesel or Yukon XL diesel

However, before this Escape was broken-in (not talking about 800 mile break-in), it would only get a mix of 22 mpg (27 mpg last winter with 60% city driving). Somewhere around the 8-10k mile mark is when it seemed to have more power and became much more efficient.
I wonder what these GM diesel's will get once broken-in? I bet people will se around 45-50 mpg on the highway.
Have done multiple long road trips with mine and love it. Longest one was last summer and totaled just under 3,500 miles fully loaded with passengers and cargo, with lots of mountain driving, and cruising at 75 mph with the AC blasting the entire trip. Still managed 40.8 mpg overall, and have recorded several tankfuls between 45-48 mpg driving that fast when just myself and my wife riding around.

I've been looking around for an eventual replacement for my Acura TSX sedan - wanting something with a hatch and AWD. I'm considering small SUVs but also now intrigued by some wagon models, but not luxury ones. Besides Subarus, there is the Golf Alltrak and Buick Regal TourX. It's interesting that the Golf Alltrak has about the same cargo room as this Terrain with seats up and down. Sure, the rear seat leg room might be a bit tighter. But why drive a large vehicle if it doesn't do anything for you. Some may like the view and actually use the extra ground clearance at times, including me, but 99%+ of the time being on the road, I would prefer the better handling of a car, considering I'm coming from the sporty Acura. Not saying this Terrain or SUVs are bad, just struggling trying to find something that I'm happy driving to work 30 miles each way that can also hold my stuff when I go camping.
gmc needs diesels to set them apart from chevy. but the diesel needs to be able to tow more than other engines offered.

If GM equipped the GMC Terrain with the same engine as the 2014 Cruze TD (2.0L), it will consist of 151hp and 264lb/ft. of torque. For the Terrain, that would equate to about 25 City / 35 Highway

Twin corporate model is Chevy Equinox as it has the floor mounted shifter. Even has the up and down tabs to manually shift on top of the gear shifter.

Clicked on this as I'm looking at things to eventually replace the wife's CX-5, saw the shifter and went nope! I like the diesel, I like the GMC styling, would never get that shifter. I specifically bought the CX-5 because of the 6 speed auto with a regular shifter.
Chev Equinox has the shifter on the console.
First thing that makes me have a 1.6L diesel engine is something from the European market, like a Skoda Octavia or Peugeot 208. Not a GMC Terrain. But still with mpg in mind, I would not mind owning one for long trips.
Melissa Bartlett GM builds very reliable diesels and they have a global engine division in Turin, Italy which specializes in diesels among other things.
Somebody mention the premium fuel requirement! Tell us that if we want the good engine, we will have to pay for premium fuel!

The energy density of diesel fuel is about 23% greater than gasoline, so when you compare similar diesel/gas fuel economies...you'll typically note that the diesels are that 23% better.
There's no real magic with diesels. You trade the faster, higher revving combustion (typically requiring spark ignition control, though that's finally starting to change with HCCI stuff) of a shorter carbon, lower-energy-density hydrocarbon for the slower, lower revving combustion that works uses high pressures to induce ignition without a spark that uses the longer carbon, higher-energy-density hydrocarbon of diesel. You could go even farther in the long chain direction with fuel oil, wax, and coal (those latter ones would almost certainly have to be external combustion, aka boiler, engines), or in the short chain direction (propane and natural gas). These different fuels burn at different rates and temperatures and result in different emissions byproducts that have different "pros and cons" on the environment and human health. That's the plain truth. I do wish diesel fuel economy wasn't treated like magic, because it's not.

Despite it being a diesel, it still has start-stop, just like the Equinox Diesel. I've seen it on all diesels except for the Cayenne Diesel, but for the ML350 Bluetec and the X3/X5 35d as well as the 328d and 535d. yes. And I know, start-stop is (and has been) the stupidest new feature on new cars these days as of 2019 onwards.

I have this car, leased it back in November 2017. Likes: Engine (yes, Diesel), the shifter buttons, style. Dislikes: Pretty much everything else. It's like driving a metal bowl full of marbles. Bad workmanship, materials are not great, spends alot of time in the shop, rough idle, radio system - LOTS and LOTS of problems there. My suggestion, look at anything else.
I continue to wonder why GMC even exists. You can get the exact same vehicles from Chevrolet. And for less money.

GMC is an incredible business that mints billions of dollars in profit a year. As you just pointed out, the engineering is minimal and people love buying it. GMC and Chevy Truck are the most important things GM has. Now you know.
GMC also serves as a premium truck brand for Cadillac dealerships so they can sell and get in on the lucrative pickup truck business.

The 2018 redesign of the Equinox has one of the best, new car launches as far as quality for the first year. So, no it is not as junkie as the CR-V which has one of the highest repair rates in the segment.

It's a diesel, it makes it's power differently. more usable in the real world than a turbo gas motor. the 9.9 second figure is looong but how often are you pedal to the floor 0-60 in a Terrain? .. I do however believe that someone SHOULD make a tune for this thing asap. GM has a bad habit of electronically sapping the life out of their vehicles. I'd still blow people's doors off in it though lol.

Tiguan TDI wasn’t even available in the U.S., and the best testing with the CX-5 Diesel only shows 34 mpg highway. I’ll keep my Terrain diesel that has no problem getting 40+ mpg at 75 mph while loaded with passengers and full of cargo, and also with full emissions crap intact . If I need to pull tree stumps out and tow heavy loads, I’ll use my truck.

There's absolutely zero need for this wimpy diesel to be in this vehicle. It doesn't even have the best towing capability in its engine lineup. Plus you'll more than likely never recoup to cost of the diesel engine, seeing as diesel is more expensive than gasoline in most areas.
Diesels are not for grocery runs, more for people that do longer distant driving, that would be the only need for this SUV. One advantage I've found is it's a treat not to have to fill the tank so often , especially in inclement weather (VW TDI owner). One main advantage is a potential for a far greater engine life and there is where you may, might, maybe ,(HEH HEH) recoup your investment.
Diesel fuel is more expensive but diesels are more efficient so that is a wash.
I could be interested in this SUV if it had a bigger diesel and you didn't have to get a fully loaded version just to get the diesel engine. And get rid of the pushbutton transmission ...jeez, wasn't that something Mercury tried in the early 60's....nobody wants that.

I just gave one example of a brand, but clearly not everybody wants a damn SUV. As really why do you think BMW is selling their normal cars in the US? More SUV models is not making you sell more, it just forces you to enter an already saturated market. Which you won't get into as why would people buy a Hyundai SUV? When they can have a Ford or - even better- a Toyota. Just because corporate thinks that they sell less due to "Not enough SUV RAWR!!" doesn't make it true. The reason Ford doesn't sell as many Sedans and Stations in the USA, compared to VW and BMW, is quality and image. Ford simply doesn't have a good family car image in the USA, which is strange as their European designed family cars are really the same quality as VW if not better in many points. They already are king of the Trucks, so they won't grow there, so they need to aggressively go into the family car market. But that is "HARD!" and CEO's want their bonus "NOW!". Outside of that it is quite clear, not EVERYBODY wants an SUV. But everybody does want quality for a decent price, and that is something where Detroit has seriously been lacking in recent years in their normal cars.
Right, is that why they gave up on selling any car in Europe? Selling off their Opel and Vauxhall brands? Give me a brake, they have been on the retreat for years now. They don't build quality unless it has a huge weight issue with engines that are far to large. SUV's and Trucks are just easier that way, as you can hide weight and engine size problems better in those cars. A varied line up, from SUV to Sedan, is what keeps your customers loyal. There is no "one size fits all". Add to that reliability and decent price and you will claw yourself back from the abyss. But sadly Detroit keeps refusing to accept that, and marches to the tune of "when the saints", to their own demise.
