    Basketball fans: How good was Vince Carter in his prime??

    I always hate the false narrative about how Vince Carter tanked his value by deliberately played shit during his last season with Toronto Raptors. They'll say "Vince jumped from 15 ppg to 27 ppg at Nets" without context.
    10 games prior to trade: 16.1/2.9/2.4 on 43.4/34.6/70.3 on 30 MPG. Vince did not play over 40 minutes a single game. In fact, he played over 40 minutes just once when he was with the Raptors that season. On his 9th game of the season, Vince played exactly 40 minuntes.
    10 games after trade: 20.9/6.3/3.7 on 43.3/31/73.1 on 40.7 MPG. Vince played over 40 minutes 7 times. 7 of his first 10 games he played over 40. He played 42 minutes in his debut game for Nets. Heck, Vince did this while coming off the bench. He didn't start until game 2. Think about that. During Vince's debut game with the Nets, he surpassed his minutes high with the Raptors (20 games).
    You take the per 36 minutes from these numbers and it's a wash. Vince actually averages more points per 36 and you have a significant advantage in 3 point shooting.
    Vince was very clearly in Sam Mitchell's doghouse. He played less than 30 minutes in 9 games with the Raptors. 9 of the 20. Almost half the games! Half the games you play your superstar under 30 minutes. Sam Mitchell also benched Vince in 4th quarters a lot of times.
    However, Vince never played less then 30 minutes in a single game with the Nets. His numbers with NJN are heavily impacted by this second half. Vince was arguably playing his best basketball of his career in February, March, April. Of course, we've to recognize that Vince played alongside with the best point guard of entire 2000s in Jason Kidd.

      Vince is my boy and I love him to death but he even said so himself in an interview that he his last couple years in T.O. that he did not try his best. The interview was in 05 or 06 I think.

      A lot of truth to this but, But coming from one of the biggest VC fans out there, I watched this 04-05 season with my own eyes and every single raptors game before he got traded that season. I was pretty young but just watching him out there didn't feel the same, just by reading his body language. There was probably a lot of tension going on in the locker room and with upper management (i can almost guarantee) at that time which may have been the reason for this. It definitely rejuvenated him when he got traded because there was a crazy switch where he instantly became the player that we'd grown to love plus even more savage. Thats why i think it hurt Toronto that bad... Yes we felt betrayed but only to that degree because we loved him so much. And the way he burned us every-time he came back crushed my 8 year old heart lol.

    Obviously he did it for Toronto, but i think it's underappreciated how VC brought legitimacy to the Nets. Sure they had a measure of success a few years earlier, but Kidd was not a superstar talent or a closer (the guy shot under 40% for them), and having one come to the Nets was a big deal. It reminds me of Kyrie right now with the Brooklyn version.

    It's fun watching these highlights of Vince over these first seasons developing or changing his game. Now with the Nets in 05 it's definitely a bit less athletic then 2 or 3 ago, but more mature, less crazy and better shot selection also. Occassionally still showing that "still got it" athleticism though pulling of some ridiculous moves 0_o

    I loved his game in New Jersey. It was so relaxed and masterful. The dunks were mind blowing, electric, but his game in Jersey was refined, nothing he could not do, always in control.

    No one will admit this. Sure Vince Carter peak athleticism was in the 99-01 but in my opinion his prime was his 2005-2006 days as a nets player. He was more complete as a player, rather than just a high flyer.

    After VC injury in TOR, Lawrence Frank was the worst thing happened to VC career. He was not in the level of coaching superstars like VC and Kidd. He could do much better if Nets had a better coach. The video is amazing. One of his best seasons. Prime VC!

    • @mikesannitti6042

    • @javadh417
      @javadh417 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikesannitti6042 Where do you want me to start? VC fans who follow him at that time know what I am talking about. They hated him so bad. For 4 years there was a huge "Fire Frank" campaign on the internet at that time. Even in the media, there was so much discussion on his incompetency as a head coach. He was a horrible horrible coach. He had no experience of being a head coach before taking over the Nets. He made so many many stupid decisions during important games. I believe Nets with that Big 3s could do much better if they had a better coach. Pistons also fired him after 1.5 seasons. That's why no one hires him as a head coach again. He will stay as an assistant coach for the rest of his life.

    • @mikesannitti6042
      @mikesannitti6042 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@javadh417 i was following him then. He's lightyears ahead of stan van Gundy, alvin gentry, and Dave joerger who seemed to hate Vince. He did fall for "give it to Vince and he'll figure it out" for final plays, but that's not necessarily bad. He did draw up that allrey oop for him in his last nets year vs the Raptors. The rest of the team was just terrible. You could scapegoat Lawrence, but look at the pitiful front lines snd benches those teams had.

    • @javadh417
      @javadh417 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikesannitti6042 For me, Sam Mitchell was his worst. One of the main reasons he left the Raptors. Frank lost many games because of his bad decision making & lack of leadership during the game. But at least van Gundy proved he could win before VC get there. My biggest criticism of Vince on his career was the way he played in Orlando. when he stopped bothering attacking the basket (while he was healthy) and became a pure 3pts shooter. He had a fantastic championship-level team but simply he didn't deliver. They wanted him to become the team leading scorer with 20+ ppg but he did not put that much effort.

    • @mikesannitti6042
      @mikesannitti6042 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@javadh417 In Orlando they didn't want him to be the lead scorer though. They pegged him as the 2nd scorer behind Dwight and Vince had to stand at the 3pt line while dwight clogged the lane. Stan Van and Orlando took Vince out of his game to appeal to Dwight's ego. That's why Vince was so streaky that year. I think Stan Van and Dwight hurt Vince's career the most. I'm sure Mitchell was terrible too, but I didn't follow Vince until he was a Net, so I can't speak on that. I just know Frank was the only coach Vince had in his prime who actually seemed to like him and let him do his thing. I know the team underperformed, but when you look at the historic lack of talent outside kidd, carter and jefferson, maybe they weren't really underperforming.

    Watching these highlights made me realize how many long twos Vince took as a Raptor, which is actually one of the worst types of shots to take. He seemed to do a much better job either staying behind the three-point line or getting a closer shot as a Net.
