    Wow thank you for posting this video. Ever since the first time I saw indoor FF planes at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls Iowa I've wondered how it all works. Very interesting and I think it could be addicting. Like RC lol.

    What propeller did you swap to at 14:02? My plane is having trouble climbing, and sometimes just glides down from where I let go. I usually put in about 1350-1500 turns using a 1:15 crank. I'm trimming, but it seems like the propeller did wonders when you swapped, where could I get it?

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a Papatong 24cm prop. Don't expect it to work miracles, it requires a well trimmed airplane. It does open up some performance options. They're on my website. In terms of your plane, have you shimmed the tailboom to keep the nose up? Which propeller do you have?

      I presented everything I could on trimming those planes in the flying segments of their respective videos. They all flew pretty nicely with the right adjustments. The only thing I would change is to reduce the wing twist on the Freedom Flight airplane so that it recovers better from ceiling hits.

    Is it worth it to heat up rubber bands before flying for better rubber band performance?

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would recommend against it for indoor. For outdoor there's an advantage to be had for non-FAI classes where preheating is banned. Don't go over 100F/38C.

    I have my front wing very far back on the broomstick so it doesnet stall, I feel like it’s robbing time since my plane just goes to the top of the ceiling and then goes down. It does not cruise at the top of the gym at all. Let me know what you think, thanks!

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you've had to slide the wing very far back, you probably used too much glue on the tail. The other possibility is that you shimmed in too much incidence so the wing had to be slid back to prevent power stalling. If it is coming down in a dive, that's what the cause is.

    Hello, I’m in science Olympiad and it’s my first time doing flight. We’re using a a freedom flight kit for division b for one of our planes and a ward’s science kit for the other. Could we try applying the advice you gave for the stinger to our planes, or does the same advice not apply to all planes? Both our planes are diving so far and we were hoping to improve them the next time we get gym time.

    At my completion the ceiling for the gym will be only 26 feet high until the lights. Do you have any tips to get the most time with such a small venue of space in the gym? I was thinking about using a thinner band, not sure if that will work. Let me know what you think I should do. Using a stinger division B(one with longer fuselage). Thanks a lot

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  ปีที่แล้ว

      In general, the lower the ceiling, the thicket the rubber you will need so as to maintain cruise for as long as possible. Get an estimate of cruise torque and then adjust backoff to get the desired climb torque (wind to full torque then back off to retain as many winds as possible). 26 feet is a decent ceiling height so 3/32" (0.094") rubber will probably be fine. Possibly .096" will be better, hard to say, and it all depends on which batch it's from.

      Check the section of the video where I was adjusting the turn. That's what you'll want to use. Also, in your free time go to indoornewsandviews.com -> downloads -> The Best of INAV. Read everything in there twice. Get a simple plane for a Pennyplane from Winning Indoor Designs, order wood and hardware from indoorffsupply.com, and learn Pennyplane well. You'll learn a ton about flying, math, science, etc and have fun doing it. Once you've built your first Pennyplane (it'll be terrible, but that's OK, your first one always is), go to freeflight.org and find a meet you can travel to and fly with others. Enjoy!

      @shuyali7476 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joshuawfinn Sorry for the vague description! To clarify, when my glider flies, it climbs up very high and glides downward with nice turns, however these turns are very fast and the glider does not spend a long time in the air. Additionally, once it is done climbing, the glider will occasionally wobble and rotate slightly (horizontally).

    Hi Joshua,
    My stinger isn't really staying in the air very long. Like I mean it will climb up to 20-30 ft then just go back down. Like in your videos I can see that your planes are like slowing going down. I have trimmed my plane and I'm doing 1000 turns so I don't know what to do. These flights that I do are topping at 1 min. I will usually have 400 turns left in flight, I see that there is a lot of power left in the plane so can you please help get my plane staying in the air longer. Thanks!

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's possible that you used too much glue and it's heavy, however you may just be flying with the CG too far forward. If you are able to shim for less incidence, you'll be able to fly with no nose weight or even slide the wing forward if there's no nose weight, which makes the flight pattern more efficient. Be careful because this does make the plane less stable.

    hi, i just had another quick question. My stinger does not climb much and stays nose-level, and I believe that a reason could be that there is a clicking noise coming from the front of the plane. Hi, thank you this video!! However, I keep having problems with my plane. At first the plane worked great, and the only problem it had was that the turns weren’t tight enough. But I followed the video and bent the wing of the tail. When I tried my plane the next day it would put it’s nose up and the tail couldn’t support the planes lift . So then I tried to move the front wings up and added mass to the nose of the plane. But then my plane had to much lift and sort of did a flip, when I tested it. So finally I tried to add more weight to the front wings and made sure that the cg was still under the wing. It was, but now I don’t know how to fix the plane when. Any suggestions?

      Don't slide the wing forward if doing so makes it stall. Also never adjust incidence to limit climb, just destroys your cruise trim. Use a torque meter to wind consistently to max torque, then back off to torque that will get you safely to the ceiling.
