Been following AFIS for a long time. I love the animation but the va/sound design and writing is what really seals it for me. I could appreciate it even just as an audio drama.

Matt lived with me and some friends for a year back in 2012. He is one of the nicest, most amazing people you'll ever meet. He popped in at a convention I was selling at in 2016 after not seeing him since, and he not only remembered me, but we reminisced about the days of living in Batavia, IL.

Man. I could listen to Matthew talk about nothing and would still be entertained. He just has a nice voice

No one’s gonna believe this but my brother was friends with the guy and I mentioned the whole robotic legs theory offhandedly and my brother told him about it and then the next day on his blog he made a joke image about it so I think I might be the reason the robotic legs joke exists in the first episode

"I'll go it alone from here" is a reference to the powerful moment where Fox decides to challenge Andross' lair alone in Star Fox 64.

The style is like if you mixed Cowboy Bebop with Starfox

Slippy with hair just looks like a fed up teenage McDonald's worker

Episode 2 really raised the bar for fan content for me. I’ve experienced some excellent stuff that’s fanmade, but this is a work of art in its own right. Everything comes together, the atmosphere, the voice acting, the gritty sci-fi storytelling and character drama, even when comedy does come in, it can be pretty funny too. There are so many scenes I can watch over and over again, James threatening the bandicoot with the slingshot, Bill and Wolf’s roast of each other, Andross’ speech, the Lemur Bros being absolutely terrifying, it’s phenomenally done

In a world full of Mario, Zelda, Pokémon and Sonic fan projects and fan made material of any medium, it’s quite surprising to see the amount of effort, passion, love and creativity put into Starfox of all things.

What makes A Fox in Space so perfect is that it’s the exact cartoon I wanted to see as a kid with these characters. Star Fox in particular has such a mature premise. You are fighting an intense war in that game where people die all around you, and you’re avenging your dead father to boot. I always thought it would benefit from a darker themed cartoon depicting the events of the games, even if it’s just the prologue.

Even as someone who didn't grow up with the Star Fox franchise in just about any capacity (let alone most of the Big N's catalogue), I cannot BEGIN to tell you how grateful I am to have been introduced to Matthew Gafford's amazing works over the years. I don't know if it was an algorithmic fluke but having Matthew's content recommended to me on my TH-cam home screen all those years ago (even before episode 1 was released) makes me truly happy to think back on, as I was able to follow the project as things were taking off and I've followed things closely ever since. You really echoed my own experience with finding this amazing gem of a series and I'm tellin' ya, this guy deserves all the success this world can offer. Can't say enough good things about this series and it makes me so happy when I get the chance to share it with people hehe

Reminds me of a guy I used to know back on Nsider2. Used to play Animal Crossing City Folk with him for hours and he would go on about a Star Fox series he wanted to make and would make script after script. Was so good and I regret til this day not saving all his work, as it was seriously one of the best pieces of fan fiction I've ever read. The way the characters are wrote here makes me think so much of him. Hope he's doing well and has seen this by now.

Dude you have no idea how cool it is to finally see those sneak peeks to episode 2 all those years ago, be played out in the actual episode when I saw it today. And that's not taking into how much better the animation has gotten

Soon as I saw the first episode, I needed more. The style, the tone, the sound design. Its a gritty space western that the 70s never had. Then episode 2 proved how mature with its themes it could get. Its so well directed, animated and written that this feels like a show that should be on Netflix. The way the game references are perfectly intermixed with the enviornments are perfect. Every character is well developed to where you feel invested. THIS is why SatAM and Archie Sonic ARE the best ver of the Sonic franchise. It fleshs out the world and characters aiming for an older audience and this series captures that essense. Dont care if I have to wait another 6 years cause quality and effort is hard to come by in modern entertainment these days.

General Pepper’s Suckercrunch is hilarious and kind of awesome at the same time. Almost as impressive as making that Andross brain joke into a legit cool line. Almost, that was definitely my favorite part.

Really love how the blender style allowed for dynamic detailed environments and shadows, but in the sole case of the train confrontation

Been a fan of Star Fox since 1993, a fan of Gafford since 2003. I know that Gafford has some fame, but really, with the level of talent he has it is insane that he isn't a household name in both comedy and animation. He is a great musician, comedic mind, voice actor, animator, director, artist, the list just goes on and on. I really enjoyed this spotlight you put together to showcase one of the most unsung greats of our generation.

  • @Rieneger

I still remember watching Matt’s clips years ago of his skits. I remember my surprise when I saw him pop up again with his animations. He really is dedicated to his work and I love the quality and style. I am more than eager to see what else he creates when this project is completed.
