I've been studying French since the 70's (off and on, mostly off) and that's the clearest explanation I've ever heard, thank you. Excellent video, thanks. The one that caught me out for a long time was the passive (I think it's called). So, I was sleeping, I was cooking, etc. are all imparfait, but I WAS caught, I WAS found, I WAS arrested are all passé composé !!
Interesting videos. The concepts of repetition and description are quite clear but not as much with mental state. What does voulais mean vs voulu? When does the mental state signify thee imparfait vs pc. Thanks.
You mean they are not as clear to YOU. Mental state means an ongoing mental situation as opposed to something that marks a change like I decided or I saw.

I have a french final tomorrow, and I'm worried that if I can't completely translate it to english, how will I know if it is l'imparfait or le passe compose? Are there any hints in the french writing?
Whatsapp me +447899732838. Where are you based ? Perhaps I have time for a quick call. In short. Single. Finished. Actions are p c and descriptive or repetitive actions tend to be imp. I had a coffee. One action. Pc. I had long hair. Description. Imp. I went to church when I was younger as in I used to go to church. Repeated imp. I went to church last Sunday p c
If you’re seeing adverbs like regularly or normally it will be imperfect as opposed to things which suggests one action like and THEN and NEXT or AFTERWARDS. I did this etc
Little clue. P c has these translations. So j’ai mangé could be. I ate. I have eaten. I have been eating. You go with what works in English. Je mangeais could be I used to eat. I was eating. I ate ( which I know is in the top group but it can be both depending) So don’t be afraid to pick a different tense from that group in English according to your example.
