Johnny Weissmuller's only competition in swimming who best him in 1920 was the great Duke Kahanamoku. And On July 9, 1922, Weissmuller broke Duke Kahanamoku's world record in the 100-meter freestyle, swimming it in 58.6 seconds. He won the title for that distance at the 1924 Summer Olympics, beating Kahanamoku for the gold medal.
I had the honor to meet Mr. Weissmuller and his nephew in Miami in 1972. They were in a VW microbus, at a Lum's hotdog stand in Coconut Grove. They had a toothless old lion in the back, so a crowd of people gathered. They were mostly girls, so I went to see what was up. (and meet girls) We hung out a bit and I got to know them well. They were experimenting with a new sport, parasailing. They had a car with a release rope, and we would go to a WWII air base off 27th Ave to fly that sucker. The police would come quickly, but never caught us, because the guy on the chute could see for miles. Scary as hell, this parachute had no harness, it was a trapeze handle on a parachute. The moment I left the ground, fear caused me to squeeze so hard on that bar, my strength was drained in seconds, so I had to pull up and hang by my legs, upside down. Great man, told me the secret of almost being burned to death in 1968 on a movie set. (I won't tell anything private) The lion was part of the settlement. Great role model for me because I was burned over 70% of my body two years later, his example helped keep me from suicide to escape the pain.
@ Hank Houke Thankyou so much for sharing you're wonderful meeting with the great Johnny Weissmuller. I'm so glad you did, it's AMAZING what the body & brain can endure, especially from advice from someone who has suffered the same injury. So glad you're still with us. Love Ruth from Australia 🇦🇺💖💖💜💜💋💋
I grew up with Johnny as Tarzan. What a thrill it was to see such a powerful man do what he did! Thank you for this video. I learned a lot more than I used to about the man, not just the character he played so well.
Your movie vignettes are fascinating and really round out the people who play big characters on screen. You make them so human and interesting, explaining their strengths & struggles. Love your channel.
I loved Johnny Weissmuller in Tarzan and jungle gym and a few other little odds and ends he did. He took what he had he made a career out of it and that's what life is. His movies might seem hokie or antiquated to us now with all the special effects and everything but I still think he stands up as the best Tarzan ever.
I grew up watching Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan, have seen them all, and the latest incarnations of the Tarzan character whether they be the movies or television, none can compare to Johnny.... just as many of us who grew up in the 50's will always consider George Reeves the best Superman, it is the same with Tarzan, Johnny will always be the best!
This is a great look at this accomplished Olympian and an entertaining actor. I did like him in the Tarzan series mind you I did prefer Jane! Only man I know who would take on a 14 foot crocodile and win. Bitof a shame more people weren't aware of his huge talent as a legendary swimmer. Thanks for this really interesting look at the great man.
We kids would go to see him at the movies on saturdays. What a treat, looked forward to his movies. I am 86 years young now, but I remember the good old days of long ago. Fond memories. Jesus is Love
What Hollywood did to the Tarzan books was criminal! Johnny Weissmuller was a magnificent athlete! Edit: In his youth he would participate in yodeling contests at neighborhood get togethers to win prizes.
Wonderful video. I really appreciate the beautiful voice this man has and all of the accolades for Johnny. He lived not far from me in Fort Lauderdale Florida and the Olympic pool was something that we all grew up with on the beach. He gave us quite a gift with that beautiful pool and the encouragement and inspiration that came with making sure that everyone knew they had an opportunity to swim there and be the best they could.
I remember watching Tarzan movies as a child in the 1970s. I was hooked on classic movies and I'm still a fan of them today. Johnny Weissmuller was quite a specimen of health and power.
Hi Age of Vintage, how are you going? This is a wonderful look at the acting life of Johnny Weissmuller, he was so incredibly fit & strong. I think he was the perfect choice, & the perfect physique to play Tarzan. You're video of him is so incredibly factual & correct, as always ❤ I do believe it was such a shame people didn't know about his Olympic success in his very early life. Another exceptional video from yourself. Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺📽🎬👧💚💛💙💜💖💖😍❤❤💕💕💋💋💋💋
My Swedish Dad was myTarzan, a great swimmer, he'd explore the Amazon, contracted malaria and live amongst the Indios. US little blonde kids learned the Tarzan yodel before anything else and took to the trees (Colombia). Even my half Irish Mom looked like that movie actress and would read Karl Marx and Dostoyevsky. I'm still wondering what Prince Charming is all about.
Later in life Johnny opened a Jungle theme park in Titusville Fl. on US1 right across the Indian River from Cape Kennedy. He lived in Titusville for a number around the 70's. A number of the monkeys escaped over the years and had their own clan behind the theme park in the very jungle like woods around the park. Once it closed in the 70's me and my buds used to go monkey hunting on the woods behind the park property.
Mark Spitz set 33 World Records & Michael Phelps set 39 World Records, but Johnny Weissmuller set an incredible 67 World Swimming Records. 'Nuff said. Tarzan wins.

Always loved Johnny Weissmuller’s movies and tv shows 👍👍👍
I considered him the only true Tarzan. I watched his movies ever since I was a little girl.
I watched those old Tarzan reruns when I was a kid on the 'Classic theater'. There were a few Tarzan's, but he's still the most memorable.
He has always been my Tarzan, I used to watch it with my brother on TV on BBC 2 in the school holidays. I never knew he was an Olympian. Thank you 😊
Thank you Rachel! 🙂

Lovely memories!! Thank you❤️
When I was in junior high (1963) our health texts were so old that Weissmuller was still an Olympic swimmer.
What Hollywood did to the Tarzan books was criminal! Johnny Weissmuller was a magnificent athlete!

Very interesting. Remember his movies from when I was a little girl but never knew anything about him. Thanks 🦋🦋🦋
Thank you Leslie! 🙂

5 Olympic gold medals and 5 wives too...although not the first Johnny was not the first Tarzan on the silver screen but became the most famous Tarzan

I never knew of his swimming record . My Father was in the swim team in High School . We watched all his movies.

What's up with that photo hes standing behind her holding her bags for her !? What a Gent .
Let's not forget about Jim Thorpe.

Nobody could do a better Tarzan than Johnny!!!!
Enjoyed!
Thank you Michael! 🙂
He was. The. 1. And only. Tarzan. For me.
He was Danube Swabian, a German minority that used to live in Eastern Europe, he was born in what is today Romania.
No other man could do better with his wild call
Weissmuller NEVER said "Me Tarzan, You Jane!" in his first Tarzan movie "Tarzan the Ape Man!
Johnny Weissmuller is the only Tarzan. Could be because he was a gold metal Olympian but he had it down perfectly.
What is Tarzan. Proceed to lightning round.
🥰🥰🥰🥰👍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
NOT TRUE, about his birth, I saw Johnny Weissmuller himself say that he was born in Pennsylvania.
He actually killed lions in Tarzan movies!
That was VERY BAD.😢
