Had voltage, spark, gas, and everything else but the darn thing wouldn't turn over. I watched this video. Go outside and pull back on the deck arm. BAM! Fires right up. Lever arm was the culprit. Thanks for the help.
I had it happen to me once and was tough to figure out. Saw another TH-cam that gave me the hint. He set his mower on fire by welding some material onto it. Don't do that. Glad this worked for you.
I have a 14 HP Briggs And Stratton Signature 2000 Elite Lawn Tractor, which is basically the same thing you have. After the original owner who had replaced it gave it to me, we fixed it up and now it runs well. Those old MTD mowers are pretty cool. Great video!
My mother used to have the same riding mower years ago back in 91, that she had bought that at Walmart on layaway. These were pretty decent tractors compared to the modern ones today. MTD was definitely a much better company back in the 90s, now the good old MTDs are obsolete and the new ones people buy from Walmart or now junk these days. Before she even bought a riding mower, she used a push mower. And the reason why she bought the rider is that it would take a half hour with the riding mower than it would have took an hour with the push mower.
Sounds similar to me. That was one tough mower. I couldn't even hazard a guess on how many hours it had on it. I've had to go with a zero turn John Deere the last couple of years. It is a bit finickier than the MTD, but I have to admit the zero turn feature is lots of fun once you figure out how to do it.
Nice condition for a 30 yera Old Lawn Tractor/mower! I rescued a Montomery wards /Signature 2000 MTD lawn tractor 14 Hp B&S I/C engine Tractor -kinda rusty - will TRY to get it running .
Thanks for the compliment, but I've really made this mower work hard. It regularly does our bluegrass lawn and then cuts much taller stuff (weeds, thistles, alfalfa, orchard grass, small branches, etc) in a field where I have a bunch of trees. I do take it in for service every couple of years to have them change the oil, sharpen the blade, check the belts. Not too long ago I caught the ratcheting piece and some 2" wide strap from a ratcheting tie down hiding in the field into the blades when I mowed a new section. What a pain to get that pulled out since it was wedged in tight and would blow smoke every time I tried to engage the blades.
the shop I took my yard machine too said it would cost more than 450.00 more beside the 180.00 I already paid to find out why it wont start or make any sound at all! I had just got it out of another shop that charge me 425.00 and it ran 5 min after I got it from him, I paid 650.00 for this used tractor I'm done!
When mine did that it was the fuse under the panel below the steering wheel. I replaced the starter and tried everything before discovering that the fuse even existed.
went o pick it up from shop today and they told me it needed a new wiring harness because the harness on there was burnt out! They said they would charge me only for parts and not labor since i had already paid 180.00 fo9r the 2 hrs labor !
let me help with this check list im a few yrs late but it may help someone later first thing to do is turn switch on press brake pedal down turn key to start did you hear a click but no start if this test tells you (if you hear the click) fuse is good solenoid is engaging causing the click now get off and find a small solenoid it will have 2 large bolts a red going straight to the starter if you found the solenoid use a pr of pliers to short two big bolts on solenoid this will spark will not hurt any thing if you do this right starter will spin motor this test tells you the solenoid is bad need a new one hope the helps takes about 2 min
Thanks for your insight. My MTD went to Garden Tractor Heaven last fall after it just became too hard to keep it going, but it was the absolute best tractor for all those years.
That's so sad. I had a brand new push mower that was cutting out after a few seconds. I went back to the place I got it and they told me that there is some sort of air intake that you have to pull on the lever or cover back off before starting it each time. It seems to stick shut after use. Gee, it would have been nice if you would have told me that when I bought it! Or better yet, not have this ridiculous problem with the product. I put a couple of big yellow stickers by the spot where I have to stick my fingers under the cover and release it each time or I forget and wonder why it won't keep running. Hopefully Lowes can help you. All the best to you, Dave!
@@OTSGVideoBabe Luckily lowes stands behind their products and they're picking it up on Friday but I will try and replace the selnoid but believe me I'm no mechanic lol . Thank you for the video and all the clues 😍
Hay wire isn't a good option. Fuses are there for a reason and can save a massive amount of damage including a risk of fire. If the fuse is blowing, there is something that needs to be fixed. A short circuit could lead to the cables melting through their insulation, ties and any plastic including the fuel tank.

No nonsense, right to the point; I like it! Thanks!

Thanks! It was the deck arm for me.
That one got me once as well. Then it fixed itself for some reason.
Great list. I would put fuel and battery first as they tend to be most common and also the most embarrassing, if you have already asked for help.
Great video I got a scrap blade on mine best mower I have ever had you are so cool

Do you know how fix a john deere riding mower
read my comment on starting any mower
Babe on your MTD when you increase your engine speed do your blades spin the same speed or faster
I believe they spin at the same speed.
@@OTSGVideoBabe They spin faster the engine tells the blades what to do
You may need a big truck. Battry
I wish you were my neighbor. I have a brand new John Deere from Lowe's and it won't start......

U don't need. That. Fuse. Put. A. Piece of hay. Wire in. The. Plug
Yes, that is a solution. I didn't even know the fuse was there until it stopped working and I eliminated nearly everything else as the possible cause.
