  • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242

    The M1 was my favorite keyboard for decades from it's introduction right up until the Yamaha MODX came out, which I bought 2 months after it's introduction.
    I bought an M1 when they were still available new. Eventually I bought a 2nd one so I could leave one at practice and have a spare. I upgraded both of mine to the internal Invision Plus 1 board which was the best expansion made for the M1. A/B testing the M1 soft synth next to my real M1's shows the power of soft synths. It's rare I can even tell a difference, it's that good! Plus I loaded my favorite 3rd party patches right in as it's sysex compatible. Something all soft synths that model a real keyboard should do.
    I still have both of my real M1's, but Korg's VST has effectively replaced them. I sampled my most used Plus 1 expansion patch into my MODX using Sample Robot, and I'll do the same for others. I wish Korg would get the rights to the Plus 1 samples and include them.
    Korg's M1 soft synth is near the top of my list of VST's. It's a real shame iM1 doesn't work on an iPhone and requires an iPad because I'd love to have it with me all the time. iWavestatiion does work on the iPhone, and there is no good reason not to offer iM1 for iPhone.
    It took decades, but the MODX6 over took the M1 as my favorite hardware keyboard because it too has a ton of great sounds made for it and countless 3rd party sounds are compatible with it like the M1. The MODX can import over 20 years worth of MOTIF sounds, plus use Montage sounds and the DX-7 series. And I really love it's portability that I can transport it in a backpack and it weighs half what the M1 did. I use my MIDI controller which has aftertouch with the M1 VST as the M1's sounds made great use of aftertouch unlike the sounds of the Montage, Kronos or Fantom.

    • @roderickalbus5818
      @roderickalbus5818 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man! I’m new to this and have recently bought the MODX8+! But do love the sounds of the M1. Do you use any of those patches in your MODX? If you want to use this software do you really need a DAW program? Sorry if any of those questions are common sense to most…

    • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242
      @classicarcadeamusementpark4242 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roderickalbus5818 I have seen M1 sounds available for the MODX, but I don't have them because I use Korg's M1 VST on my laptop.
      There is a stand alone version of the Korg M1 VST that doesn't require a DAW if it's still available. There are many advantages to using a DAW, such as the ability to load more than one VST instrument at the same time and map splits across your MIDI keyboard or send them to more than one MIDI keyboard.
      I'd like to hear about which M1 samples for the MODX are any good if anyone reading has them.
      One key feature missing on the MODX the M1 made great use of is aftertouch on the physical keyboard. I use a MIDI controller that has it. The MODX lacks aftertouch. It's not that big a deal for MODX sounds since the Montage, as well as today's modern synths like the Korg Kronos/Nautilus, and Roland Fantom in their sound collections generally don't make good use of aftertouch anyway, but M1 sound collections made much better use of it and it gave great expression.

    So, I guess we've already given up on the "Only 2 Synths you actually need" idea then? ;-) I don't think Diva sounds like the M1, huh? I actually love these recreations from Korg since I can put the hardware away and still have the sounds when the mood strikes. I think we've hit "Peak VST" now and could pretty much recreate any classic synth and probably any current synth too since they're mostly software. What we need now is the next evolution in sound creation, whatever that might be.

    It’s 1988 (I think), I had sold my Juno 6 (to buy my first car) a few years earlier, I am in Carlsbro Sound, Nottingham UK messing about on a Roland D20. Sales guy comes up to me and says ‘come and try this’. Takes me over to an M1. He says ‘This is what you want’. Played the first patch ‘Universe’ Wow, I said ‘I’ll take it’, filled in the credit agreement, which I couldn’t really afford and walked out with it. Only sold it a couple of years ago…Why, why did I sell it? Storage space mainly. Software recreations are fantastic and is great we have them but they will never, ever, be the real thing, with the memories that go with them. 👍🙂

      I’m still holding on to my original M1 for the same reason. Had it since I was 13 and somehow convinced my parents to buy it for me after the amount of time I was spending on my Yamaha PSR and needing something more sophisticated to advance my skills.
      My beloved M1 has followed me from the UK (bought it at Hammonds in Watford - RIP) to several states I’ve lived in in the US, and has spent its years both proudly on display, and locked in its travel case to keep it safe from my kids when they were too young to treat it with respect. It now sits to my left in my office, with a few age-related quirks impacting its usability.
      Every week I wonder if I should get it fixed or sell it off and buy the VST (which really does sound identical). The struggle continues.

      I prefer software reviews Woody. I have 14 hardware keyboards. I see myself eventually greatly scaling down as it's....simply not needed anymore. Software is much easier to transport to gigs, band practice, far more cost effective and don't require all the maintenance. I've effectively replaced many of my keyboards from Korg, Roland, ARP, Casio (CZ's) and others with software clones. Plus added many of the synths of my dreams I could never afford, or afford to transport thanks to software.
      My wife & I eventually see ourselves in a small house, and having room to store so many keyboards is not something a lot of people have, nor is it really necessary anymore with all the great soft synths.
      It was soft synths back in 1985 that got me into synths in the first place. It's finally come full circle, completing the original vision I had of not needing to have a huge collection of physical keyboards to make all the great sounds. Sure it looks cool, and is more fun, but it's so impractical.

    • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242
      @classicarcadeamusementpark4242 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same. The M1 piano is the one thing that quickly got dated. Most everything else stood up well for many years. The M1 had a good piano for 1988 for a portable keyboard and at a price that wasn't insane, but it wasn't long before decent grand piano samples were available in other keyboards competing with the M1. The M1 still beat out a lot of other keyboards for many, many years, but not for the piano sounds.
      I used the M1 piano for many years as it was the best I had. But I don't miss it in the least. The pianos in the keyboards of the past 25 years are much better.

    Great sound never goes out of style. I have a Korg MicroArranger a little keyboard that has incredible sound for just $500 US. I assume Korg used the Triton engine from around the year 2000 for this little wonder. I can mix up to 3 sounds in layer and it is angelic. Too bad the MicroArranger is out of production. You're using software which means you need great DACs and preamps on your interface output to achieve that great sound. But keyboards need the same attention at their outputs too. Analog doesn't have the same problems, but digital needs high quality electronics at the output to make great sound out of any synth engine.

      На ру-трекере есть взломанные версии для нищебродов, скряг или просто пользователей старых компьютеров и операционных систем.

      @@chaosme1ster Yes, especially because the prices are very reasonable, Korg's software manager is a breeze to use and also because Korg kindly offers a 50% discount every year at Christmas.

      @@Acrimonious_Snake And at the same time you say in Russian that "there are hacked versions on the ru-tracker"? Okay... very special idea about ethical behaviour you have...

    Korg Software manager is far superior than the RCM... It works very fast and has very clean and simple purpose. Day and night. Roland's software manager is a big slow pile of junk, bugs, ads and too much stuff in one place.
