in this case "caliber" is the number you multiply the diameter by to get the barrel's length. So 5" x 50 = 250 inches long. The British 15"/42 gun was an odd length (for example) because it was (basically) a bored out 13.5" gun.

Did you mean to say the main guns are .50? That's 12.7mm, not 100+mm. 104mm is what they used for anti tank rifles, for example.
