I (Nick) have a lot more experience than Mitch, being his instructor, but a large shield counters the spear really effectively.
With real weapons, the shield would even be better. on some thrusts with a training spear, the shield flaps to the side, what may result in a hit with the spearthrust. Because its pretty narrow at its low part, and greatsword and cutting/chopping polearms boucing things off way more than thrusting weapons/thrusting-only polearms
Kite shields are one type we've never played with. One guy had one over ten years ago, but that was it. I do intend to get one later this year. The leg coverage they give is definitely excellent. But see as most are double strap, rather than punch grip, they are closer to the body. So less reach, and no pivoting of the grip. That is one of the things that is fascinating using punch grip shields compared to the double strap metal round shields that we often use for renaissance era sword and shield. As for could it defend against those larger weapons, well largely it shouldn't have to, as they were on their way out of usage as those weapons were becoming common. But Im wondering, if kite shield could protect leg from low, powerful greatsword/halberd swing to the legs. Would it bounce off, or not? What is your opinion
I think a powerful swing with those weapons would probably beat the base of a kite shield aside and meet its target. It is light there, and far from the grip position so a lot of leverage. But pushing forward with the shield and allowing it to tilt to displace some of the energy, might be able to handle it.

Nope, there is no perfect weapon or combo. It's all about the context they are being used in. Sword and shield is a great all rounder though. The blade is not treated like a lightsabre at all. The cuts must be delivered in such a way as to wound as the swords were intended. However what you are often seeing in this fight is the pulling of blows from the sword user once they have closed as the spear user is already beaten and so to strike them hard serves no purpose than to harm your training partner. The blows could easily be delivered with power within those ranges of motions. Additionally, a sparring bout like this isn't neccessarily intended to represent the entirety of a fight. It's not clear to me why the spear thrust at 2:58 (second thrust under the shield) doesn't end the fight; it appeared to make solid contact with Red's midsection (or should have, in any case) and Red didn't appear to be in a position to disrupt Black's aim or thrust. Perhaps the floppy point prevented Red, or even both, realizing the hit landed. At 3:30, a couple of things happen: after the blow to Red's hand, Black reveals a vulnerability in Red's reaction to the high thrust (shield rises quite far to defend) and in the next exchange leaves Red massively off-balance after a well-placed thrust (which failed because Black's left hand was much too forward after the spin), but Black is not prepared (or confident?) enough to effectively capitalize on these opportunities.
