Gloria Steinem says that white women who supported President Trump in 2016 were voting for their husbands' interests, rather than their own. Do you agree?
My response below. She is an arrogant person who has no respect for other women unless they agree with her agenda. Though I do not support Mr. Trump politically, I believe Ms. Steinem's assessment of women who may have voted for Mr. Trump (or anyone else who disagrees with her) as uneducated baffoons who can't speak for themselves is a disgrace and mockery of ALL Women. There was a time when she announced how proud she was of her sister who had gone back to school and graduated (I believe in her 50's) from law school after raising her children.
Only partially. I think many white women also enjoy their privilege as White and don't want to lose that (or feel they have.) Plus, so many of their churches, governments, clubs have insisted that the changes for women's rights, LGBT rights, rights for people of color are threatening their way of life and undermining their families.
@Eilliw Nodrog How can you make these assumptions about the people of welfare, the victims of police brutality, and people who have fled their countries with a simple hope of a better life with less danger when you have never lived in there positions? You don’t know the feelings faced when in these positions... so how can you assume they are all “lazy” if you’ve never had to overcome the same obstacles? You have no idea of the mental and physical challenges these people are facing, yet you are willing to give up hope on them? Based off of what? Statistics? News Sources? Why don’t you go have a conversation with a single mother of welfare, and ask them their story, open your heart and mind to those of others before making a statement about them...
I'm a democrat who loves a bunch of southern states. There's very little depth of thought in the arguments I get from my friends who are GOP and sometimes Independent (though there are a few Independents that have really spent time listening and thinking). It's a basic "I don't trust those Democrats!" with no time spent looking at the policies. It was revealing to me when I argued about Hillary Clinton with a friend from Texas. Over about a year, I slowly debunked all of his ideas about her. In the end, we agreed that her and Bill taking the White House furniture was dumb. But really, all the measurable arguments were something I could slowly pull apart. I still don't think he voted for her, because "he didn't trust her". But I have concluded that a lot of people are just voting based on a bumper sticker's worth of understanding. Is that true for women more than men? Yeah. A lot of them have less sense of needing to learn about the issues than their husbands. They watch less news and don't want to engage or think about big issues. Though I think that eases up as people make more money. I feel like if people weren't so paycheck to paycheck, they'd be more willing to invest their time and energy.
Loved the Podcast even more. But I was bothered by the pre and post narrator’s need to counter Gloria’s statement that the feminist movement believed that the reason that the ERA failed was because of economic resistance especially by the insurance industry reiterating that historians believe that Phyllis Schlafly was responsible instead. This gives the impression that the ERA was a cat fight between women instead of an organized silencing by the establishment to maintain the patriarchal status quo where Schlafly was a orchestrated narrative that hid this fact. All in all, thank you for a wonderful interview of an amazing feminist icon.
Oh, fah sure, it's always men's fault. EEKKK!! THE PATRIARCHY!! HEAD FOR THE HILLS! Guys, I can not make this stuff up.
