I cannot believe this band never got enough attention in the U.S., especially in the Christian radio stations during the 80s. Glad I got to discover Koinonia today.
Sadly they were just TOO GOOD. And well, as was said on 'American Bandstand' , "It had a good beat, butt I COULDN'T dance to it". They were so far above the masses comprehension, people just didn't want to go to the trouble of comprehending what was HAPPENING when these musicians were playing. The highest compliment I ever recieved, was from Steve Langdon, a monster drummer in my humble opinion, and he said I played like Bill Maxwell. I was stunned!!!! You had to know Steve, be just DIDN'T blow smoke. I didnt share his assessment, but I enjoyed him saying that.
They were just too good for the masses. ONLY other musicians, and then mostly jazzers, could/would appreciate them. Well, in this realm of time and space... I imagine in eternity it is a different story!
Yes we got a good acceptance and people like us - it was a new band and also some of us had an stablished career and touring with other artists etc but ye we got around a bit Aldo in Euro and Scandinavia - as you can tell on this Jazz festival which is one of the most important and popular in Europe
It’s a great honor to see how people when discovering this music / concert they can feel the presence and power of our God and know who we are in Jesus 🙏🏼”All the Hlory be to God” ✝️
This is what happens when the most in demand session players get together to form a band. Difficult to compare. I saw them live in Kansas City, awesomeness!!!!!!!!
thanks so much for your comments about this Group / Band Koinonia. It was a blessed moment that God send for us to share musically and spiritually the gif he implanted in all of us- great group of gifted players
I co-hosted a jazz radio show in the 90's and Koinonia was always the most requested group to be played. They brought people together with their music and passion. Always a fan favorite!
Hi Alex, I love the beginning of Mercy by Andraé Crouch! You played percussion right? Who else was involved especially in the beginning of the song? Blessings Winfried
I grew up on this! i knew every note, beat and drum/percussion lick from hours and hours and hours of listening to this album on tape! The tape finally gave way :-( I finally found a seller of the vinyl recording a few years ago that i converted to mp3.. it remains my all-time favorite live album of all time. Thanks Alex Acuna for sharing...! Amazing!!!!!!
Me too. Never saw them live in Europe, but was lucky to see Open Hands in Sweden. The Band, Abe, Mark King, Nick Beggs was huge influence in my teens as a bass player.. yes the 80ies 😁
I never listened to Koinonea in the 80s, though I'd heard of the band and listened to jazz. I'm so glad someone shared your music on Facebook. I can listen with Pandora
Ha, Alex I'm watching this in 2023 so it's almost 40 years now, next year. Crazy how time flies, yes ? I recall seeing this as the "Celebration Live Album" in the trademark blue Sparrow Cassette at our Bible Book Store in San Diego in '85 thinking "who ARE these guys?!" I also have Frontline on CD !
I think this was recorded on 1984, really do not remember that well but it was a great tour with friends, always different.-aa.
Hadley was a dear friend in the 70-80's OKC, OK. I used to stay on his and Deb's sofa after they moved from OKC to Orange County. Hadley was a fan of Steve Lukather and never admitted how good his own guitar playing was. The most humble person I've ever known. His wife Debbie is a treasure and no one could appreciate their quality and hospitality who has not experienced it. The example of Christ's love for humanity.
Mr. Alex, your music is so amazing. I love It! I follow everything about You, Mr. Justo and Mr. Laboriel. I knew your music through Mr. Ron Kenoly Albuns. GOD Bless You All!!! Thank You All for this Wonderful Music!!!
Most members of this talented contemporary jazz band also backed up the great Japanese city pop singer, Momoko Kikuchi, for one of her tours in the mid-80's.
I've always thought Bill Maxwell was the most effortless drummer ever. He's fantastic. Now wonder Andre Crouch used him as his drummer. I saw Koinonia with this line up many times in the 80's.
Love this, all of them, but especially Abraham Laboriel. It doesn't get much better than this anywhere. I liked these guy way back when, I just wished they had been more well known in the States. They were awesome in my book.
I grew up listening to you guys; I practiced my drumming to your tracks and knew every note to your music! Thank you for giving me such joy and the realisation that Christian music doesn't have to be mediocre! We can give Jesus a great gift in return for all He has done for us.
I saw Koinonia live in the mid-80s in Wetzlar or Giessen in Hesse, Germany (I don't remember exactly). Quite a small concert hall, but fantastic music and great mood. Thanks for sharing this, it brings back memories, and is also really fine music, worth to hear more often..
Alex, thanks for this. Lately I've rediscovered Koinonia, and being older, I appreciate it even more than when I had it on vinyl so many years ago. What a fantastic opening here! All you fellow played *so well*. Blessings!

I believe that was 1984 or 1985. Cornerstone wasn't around until '84. I saw them too. I was only 13 or 14 but recognized that this was very high quality music.
Hello Rick, yes good catch, It was '84 or '85. Got to spend some time with Abe and play at Willow Creek church with Abe & Justo a few years later. Awesome group of guys. All the best
One of my top 3 all time favorite Christian bands. Excellent musicianship and energy. I always wanted more output, albums from the band, Abraham Laboriel is my all time favorite bassist. What a way to play skillfully for The Lord.. God Bless you all...
This is so Amazing, seeing anointed & gifted musicians worshipping Jesus through their instruments. Your music was an inspiration to me. I sing & play unto the Lord! Thank you for honoring the Lord the way you do.
Seriously , there migt be debate who is the "best" bassplayer, but there is No contest who is the most Annointed player, Abe is the master and can exite the crowd alone as nobody else
Thank you so much for allowing God to use you. My family, especially my brother and I have been so very blessed by your music. Even your testimony, as we were watching (my brother is a drummer he comment that you guys are the absolute BEST and even greater than your skill is your anointing or the anointing of God upon your all). My brother said that it is so powerful that during this session he is sure that you were driving out demons that may have had people bind and for that we are grateful

my friend and I saw you folks play early or mid 80s, i think it was some kind of mall. I stood behind Bill Maxwell, and I remember this song. I could not wait for your guys nxt album to come out. I still have all my old tapes and listen to them. It was funny a few weeks ago my friend commented on my tape player, in my 03 Durango, and said, "AND there is a tape in it. Your music has really blessed my life. Would be great if you guys could do it one more time. There is a fan base.
Pero que lujo escuchar a estos grandes músicos sencillos como Alex Acuña y habraam laboriel.
The best band ever...just awesome and unmatched
