  • Felix Mendelssohn’s "O come, everyone that thirsteth" from his oratorio Elijah is a profound musical expression of spiritual invitation and renewal, directly inspired by Isaiah 55:1: "Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price." This passage speaks to the universal human longing for salvation and the gracious invitation from God to partake in His blessings, regardless of earthly status or material wealth.
In the context of the service for the departed, this invitation takes on an even more poignant meaning for New Apostolic Christians. Our faith emphasizes the extension of God’s grace and salvation to the departed, those who have passed beyond earthly life but are still called to partake in the “waters” of salvation. Mendelssohn’s choral plea, therefore, carries extended meaning for us in that God's love and salvation is offered to every soul and transcends all boundaries, including life and death.
