All input was broadcast over UDP and the screen image was projected from the rear onto the input tablet. This technology will be a great asset for architects and industrial designers in the, let's hope, not so distant future. As an architect I would really like to try that stuff for myself, modelers and animators would go crazy over this.
I first saw this video as a junior in college and assumed the technology was years away from the consumer market. I would never have imagined the iPhone coming out the very next year.
Still remember watching this video when I was in school back in the day. Now look at the world, iPhone and Bitcoin. Who could have imagined. We are living in amazing times folks.
it good to see that the multi touch system is finally being used for something. I'm actually kind of glad MS has taken the technology and using it... I hope they include the demo apps (even though they are linux)
This particular screen appears to use infared most touchscreens use a conductive transparant coating. Usually Indium Tin Oxide. Multi-Touch is very cool. The company I work for is working with Apple to make the multi touch screens that will go on the iPhone. Multi-Touch will be the wave of the future.
many companies have been working with multi-touch system, not just microsoft. They each use different methods. For example, microsoft uses multiple cameras and sensors to get the effect, where as Han here uses something different, although I don't remember it off the top of my head.
Actually Surface is being used in a number of formats now... one of them is on a globe display so that its 360 degrees of interaction for multiple people. It also helps with global mapping etc... So it could be Surface, you never know.
Isn't that amazing? This is the first video I ever "favorited" on TH-cam because the technology was so exciting... Now everyone has one in their pocket. These screens are ubiquitous less than a decade later.
@offsetsammy Yes i have, but its not a multi-touch screen is it? It certainly has a very small multi-touch screen on it, but you cant hook that up with your PC and use it as a input device. What i was hoping they could commercialize was those big multi touch monitors you could connect to your personal computer.
this tables are awesome...in the future when one is the common house hold, like computers are to this day- teens are going to have some crazy ass trips:D:D
I agree with the many people who say this is "the future" or "revolutionary", because it is. If this makes it into mainstream computing, the world will quite literally be changed by it. People will understand computers better because they can interact with them in ways that make sense to them. Terminology will [...]
Actually, you can, using settings on your macintosh have the dock do that. Go into your settings and see, mine is on the top and the bouncing is optional. So it is possibly a macintosh bro-ham
This an amazing computer interaction technology that didn't come from MIT Media Lab for once. I guess most of thier ideas tend to be too wacky to implement in the real world until like 10 years later. Simplicity at it's best!
I may be dreaming and such, but for the 3D viewing, the guy didn't move his hand much to rotate in depth... does that mean that this screen could ALSO be pressure sensitive?
Most of those are in Windows 7 touchpack, but where the others? the lava games looks cool. And the one where u draw and you can animate it. Why no one released the software yet?
OMG awesome!!!! I can't wait Apple releases it's next macbook, I read somewhere that it'll have a multi-touch screen (like that), can't wait to get a computer like that, so cool :O
I remember seeing this demo when it first came out and being really excited for the future of touch input. It didn't take that long for the future to arrive. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to killing some swine with irate fowl.
yes what matt said. i think apple just has more patants on it, which is what leads a lot of people to believe that apple will release a smaller macbook pro with a mutlti-touch screen. hopefully it will be announced at macworld this month.
@r4nd0mn4me actually we do... just get a multi touch screen and design software for it... might not meet those standards but still would look almost the same
I agree that Windows couldn't possibly handle what's shown in this demo. It's been rumoured that this is Mac OS X because of the "Dock" in the map segment, but I doubt it due to (1) the fact that it's along the TOP edge, (2) the way it interacted with the user, i.e. the icon simply scales bigger and stays that way when tapped, instead of bouncing, and (3) when tapped, the icon didn't open a new application; it changed the viewing mode within the map application!
First decent demo of a touch screen interface i've found! 1:56 is how google earth should work 0:40 and 2:26 is how Windows7 desktop should behave (without stupid pull down menus - which don't work well on touchscreens)
@jariroth An iPhone or Android cell phone is by definition a multitouch screen. Over 50% of cell phones sold and operated in the US at this time are smartphones, over 80% of those are iPhones and Androids. Ergo most cell phones are multitouch. Also they have in fact done something with this, at least microsoft has. They have even taken it steps further to give us cell phone syncing simply by placing it on this table watch?v=iBUHjaZ2Uk0 Hows that crow taste?
[...] Also, even with bouncing disabled, I don't think icons stay zoomed, but that's not that important; I didn't say I thought it *couldn't* be a Mac, only that it didn't seem like the "official" Dock up there. And rscofield, I'm on my cherished 17" PowerBook which I use all the time. I have an inkling of what they're capable of. Don't sweat it. :)
yeah and the sampled vocals in the track are nina simones... anyone heard of her? im longing for the day when apple releases a laptop with multitouch screen so i can eat my mushrooms and imagine im melting into my computer :)
We're in the future. First the Wii, cars that parallel park themselves, now this? Flying cars by next summer, I'm so excited to be living in the future :)
Actually, you can't place the taskbar wherever you like in the OS X environment, unless you're running Windows in an emulator in order to *have* a taskbar. The Dock, on the other hand, is by default only settable to the left, right and bottom edges. Abnormous, I assume you either have changed settings another way (i.e. Terminal) or have a program that does OS X tweaks. [...]
@Curristoo Good luck with that! The iPad has a portable energy source, while this is very stationary. And besides, ASUS just released a new tablet, which, without a doubt, kicks all *pads in the face.
perhaps in 5 -10 years apple will have integrated glasses free 3d into their multi touch screens on their iphones and ipads. Then we could have holographic touchscreen computers like from Minority Report.
I remember when this video was mindblowing.
its always mindblowing
Me too. I found it in my favorites 😁

This is the future of digital artwork! This is epic, should have one out on the market by the time i can afford one
Whoever gets a machine with this kind of capability on the wide market first is going to make a fortune.
This technology will be a great asset for architects and industrial designers in the, let's hope, not so distant future. As an architect I would really like to try that stuff for myself, modelers and animators would go crazy over this.

I still come back to this video every now and then because of the music. It's funny reading the old 10+ year old comments by the way.
God I remember seeing this video while working at Apple in 2006 and being mesmerized as if it were magic. Now look at us.
Still remember watching this video when I was in school back in the day. Now look at the world, iPhone and Bitcoin. Who could have imagined. We are living in amazing times folks.

is this account still active ?
this reminds me of that Tom Cruise movie "Minority Report"
I bet playing The Sims would be more of a workout with this thing
music and the screen is BADASS!! supersweet

an iphone is an addition to the IPOD mp3 music player. the Iphone is a on the move music system with a phone and camera on it (it is so cool)
@12OunceProphet it's called "who am i? by peace orchestra.
whose soundtrack is it? , the soundtrack is the only reason i ever re-visit this page..
What the music on the background? Great display!
this will be awesome for graphic designers! :O~~~~~~~~
I liked this video in 2006, and now we're living the future.
WHERE'S MY DAMNED HOVERBOARD!
The music is "Who Am I" by Peace Orchestra

Я видел это в 2007....и смотрю его в 2022....
Тогда это казалось космос.... Сейчас обыденность.... Как летит время....
this is so awsome, computer are getting so good these days
yeah they really are
Woah, 2006, your really stepping up your game!
Actually Surface is being used in a number of formats now... one of them is on a globe display so that its 360 degrees of interaction for multiple people. It also helps with global mapping etc... So it could be Surface, you never know.
nice demo!
I liked it!
Peace Orchestra - Who Am I is the song :) It's on the excellent Animatrix Soundtrack
And I'm here watching from my smartphone...
Isn't that amazing? This is the first video I ever "favorited" on TH-cam because the technology was so exciting... Now everyone has one in their pocket. These screens are ubiquitous less than a decade later.

ya they are making like a tablet or a video player portable that will use some of these characteristics in the video
that is the coolest thing I have ever seen, when it comes to gadgets.
Would be really cool.... IF THEY RELEASED IT!
Seriously this video was made in 2006 and still no progress in commercializing it.
@jariroth Look for Perceptive Pixel. This was released years ago, just not for the general public.
Its in the Animatrix Album: "Who Am I? [Anamatrix Edit]" - Peace Orchestra
@pk709394 it would be really hard to play , and warcraft 4 ? i'm not sure if they'll be releasing that anytime soon
this tables are awesome...in the future when one is the common house hold, like computers are to this day- teens are going to have some crazy ass trips:D:D
That is absolutly amazing!
so when are we all getting this? that would be so cool a dual multi-touch screen no more keyboards.
how many inputs can it track at once? is the software available for download? I am particularly interested in the floppy drawing thing.

wow, people 14 years ago knew what was up

New technology from ms, surface, using this idea. Cool video on the ms site with the newer uses of this technolgy
I may be dreaming and such, but for the 3D viewing, the guy didn't move his hand much to rotate in depth... does that mean that this screen could ALSO be pressure sensitive?
waiting for this to come out!
like others say, the screeen will be greasey after some time and you will be forced to clean it often,
but still very good concept.
the song is kruder&dorfmeister with who am i.
sarah
Thumbs Up! Cool design!
Most of those are in Windows 7 touchpack, but where the others? the lava games looks cool. And the one where u draw and you can animate it. Why no one released the software yet?
Mmmm... Matrix soundtrack. I would totally love to use this in Photoshop or Maya!
Not only cool but also useful...
OMG the music for this is so good..
I really want a synth like this, but they are soo expensive :(
Can anyone tell me what this track is?
it's 4 years ago and still much impressive than today
I suggest the IR multi touch frame to show
incredible, I want it :-)
tubetuur: it's Peace Orchestra, song: Who Am I? It was used in Animatrix movie... cool one too.
The most necessary technology!
OMG awesome!!!! I can't wait Apple releases it's next macbook, I read somewhere that it'll have a multi-touch screen (like that), can't wait to get a computer like that, so cool :O
so is this the future? how cool!
The first device to use tec like this was the iPhone back in 2007..

Can't wait to see this screen on every house, probably only the rich will have them.
(Trying my best to fit the 2006 vibes)
where did you get one of these touch screens
thats the coolest thing i've ever seen.
2017 january. 6 years has gone by. check out what happened. sweet. still love this video!
ummmm, 6 years? I has been 11 years.
Heh, it propably just has a video projector, a lot of IR leds and a camera, yes, but it's still a touchscreen. A cheap but functional one at that too.
Absolute madness!!!!! awsome~!!!!!!!!
@willdoyougood
"Who am I?" by Peace Orchestra.
super cool! now this is call technology.

Is this touch screen on the market yet?
If is so?

AHHHHHHHHHHH!Yes! the touchscreens can change our lives
no freak'n way. I can't believe I'm seeing this. What we see in movies is now brought to life
That is wicked awesome :D
what software is this?... i have a touch monitor... think it would work?

I wold trade my soul for this!
Thanks for that!
yeah right. I was wondering all 5 minutes where I heard that - animatrix. thx
That would kick ass on ecstacy!
That is so cool!
