I love music from the 2000s. Brings me nostalgia. There's a 2008 song of similar tone to this song that I recently re-discovered called "Great White Coma" by The Sunstreak (The 4-minute TH-cam-Topic version is best). Great White Coma is more about heartbreak than unrequited love, it's unclear who is more at fault in the song (him or her) and because he's singing with his heartbroken perspective he paints her as the careless one and him as the noble one. But clearly he is hurt and because he's so distraught by what has happened it's easy to hear him as a sympathetic yet also unreliable narrator. It's an intense passionate song which can be interpreted many ways with the main line "I promise you I'll never change"... having a tragic ambiguity to it. With the rock intensity of the line you think either he means he'll never heal from his heartbreak or he'll never learn from his own mistakes which he's probably glossed over. It could also be hopeful or sentimental, that maybe he'll never stop being a well-intentioned romantic. But the he way he bursts the line that he'll "never change" is definitely unsettling, like a kind of heartbroken recoil, an emotional backfire against himself. I love how in his love-broken confusion he asks the listener directly some deep questions. How many songs ask questions to you? Not many. Most songs explicitly direct you where to go or what to feel; whereas "Great White Coma" asks rhetorical questions about love and ruminates in the ambiguity of the singer's heartbroken skewed perspective. Anyway- it's worth a listening to. I highly recommend.
