I can appreciate your enthusiasm & passion for the art of sound. It is art for the ears after all.
The fact that you're just getting started with a state of the art, super hi fidelity recording studio in this stage of your life is impressive to say the least. The knowledge you share is also much appreciated. Curious to know if we have mutual acquaintances in the audio world...

Thanks for all the videos. You have helped me on my audio journey. They are always informative, and dare I say it, amusing at the same time.

This is one of the longest sessions Paul has ever done. It's obviously a very technical and important topic. But even I ask the question why so many sampling rates ? This just bamboozles everyone .... it is reminiscent of the days when railways used differing rail gauges...! If you really like and appreciate music like I do then all this technical sampling rates and down conversion is just such a thorn in the side or a burr in the saddle....

Janina, you are asking a very good question. I don't think any label is happy to produce 9 digital formats, a CD, an SACD, a vinyl and a 1/4" tape for every project. The cost of production and storage (both physical and digital) is enormous and confusing to the customer. That said, the customers don't agree on what is the format they want to listen to and we now find stores (digital and physical) that sell formats to customers... including streaming. Not all streaming services use the same formats, not all stores sell vinyl, not everyone wants to buy a CD. The stores follow the customer demand. I'm going to guess that you buy the format you most enjoy and are set up for. Regardless of what format you buy, be happy you are supporting the artist and label... especially if you buy physical products or digital downloads. Thank you for enjoying music.

I just want to make my DAC and ears happy with the most genuine original lossless master quality and any lossy transcoding will make it less happy...I have 1Gbps internet and my DAC (and many modern DACs) can do DSD-512 and 768kHz PCM 32 bits, so why bother with less than master quality original data?

4x or 2x or 1x DSD are mostly word-games for marketing something 'new' for more $$$. People cannot hear the difference in control tests. Most couldn't pass a DBT between 24/96 vs 4x DSD

I do apologize for asking a off topic question, but I couldn't think of anyone but you ask because of your extensive knowledge of audio. Has anyone ever heard of Luxon Lx-727Dx speakers?
    Please help with answer. Thanks

Hey Paul, I kept thinking of you and your studio while watching Rick Beato's interview with author Ted Gioia titled A Warning on the Future of Music. I think you'd like it.

That brings up a question. You said that you mix in analog. Will the vinyl recordings be analog the whole way through? Or, will the analog "master" get DSD "treatment" before going on vinyl?

Yes just connect the output of that mixing console to cutter amplifers and the cutting lathe.

Yes, as a general rule, you could say so . . . unless there's an even more expensive option-of course.

A bit confused there. If I buy a DSD file from Octave Records I actually get the single DSD rate. My equipment can only read single rate DSD. If I am buying next gen DSD’s of Octave Records(2x or 4x), will I still be able to play it on my Single DSD rate equipment?

In addition to the usual vinyl and cassettes I grew up on a bunch of bootlegged hand copied live cassette recordings, traded by mail.
Literally every reasonable streaming format is better than that. I may just have old bad ears, but 99% of what I hear sounds pretty good.
Besides, some day quantum sampling will make all thoughts of bit rate obsolete. 😄

Good practice, doing multiple identical mixes straight into the final 'product'.
I can't help but wonder though; You buy 2x files because you play 2x dsd. What if you upgrade?

0L12 (福岡), city in western Japan. Interviewed for a job once to go there (didn't get it.) Copy and past the Hiragana (the beginning word of my comment) into Google Translate for an approximation of how to pronounce it.

But down sampling has less issues than up sampling, right?

Paul, how long do the elbow pads last on your mixer?
It is decades old, and I am wondering whether or not those are the original pads.
If they have been replaced, what company makes those pads?

There is nobody on the planet that can distinguish between those two sampling rates. It's all placebo effect. Audiophiles are willing to pay big bucks for that effect even though most of them couldn't even ABX the difference between a lossy itunes AAC @ 256 and a 24/192 "hi-res" file. Digital music reproduction long since passed the limitations of our ears and our brains. Best to stop worrying about the "quality" and start enjoying the music.

  • @grampawwillie1665

remember: the Nyquist Theorem tells us: when the sampling rate is 2x the highest frequency we want to reproduce then the DAC reproduction of an analog signal will be identical to the original analog which was digitized. see xipf research: this can be demonstrated. from a practical standpoint CD quality -- 44khz/24 bit is adequate to reproduce the original analog. the "original analog" .... is MIXED("mastered") -- and the quality of the mixing determines your end results. certain source material suffers more from reproduction than others -- particularly where many sound originals such as an orchestra or a choir -- are mixed. I really think we need to move ahead from stereo to the old left-right-center configuration before we can move ahead on sound. I'd like to see Blue-Ray adapted to service a left/center-center/right configuration. this might be built using BlueRay as a source and then building out a system using 2 integrated amps and 4 speakers arranged in an L-CC-R pattern. This should be especially effective where the original performance has 2 leads -- as many do.
    "IMHO", naturally

Sampling rate is only part of the problem in reproducing a signal.

    • @Chrisspru

filtering to prevent frequencies beyond 22khz from causing low resonances can harm a recording because the filter curve can inch into the audible.
unhearable frequencies also physicaly interact with the speakers (or even our bodies), changing how the audible part is reproduced.
so hiher sample rates allow for amore natural resonance foundation and a lessened filtering effect

Every time I hear a supposed high resolution digital recording it doesn't sound good. Someone sent me some high resolution flac files and they sounded cold and hard. I am tired of the cold sterile digital sound so I listen to vinyl only. Interesting thing is that I love my old Telarc vinyl LPs that were made from a digital source sampled at 50k. I have some of the same recordings on CD and they lack dynamic range and bass and almost sound like a different recording. I want to hear a sample of these octave recordings to hear if they sound any good.
