Manhattan used to have very distinctive neighborhood and loads of mom and pop stores.
    Now its mostly homoginized.

Wouldn't you rather five of those mom and pop shops get closed down so Guy Fieri can have a place to serve his Trashcan Nachos?

I used to have a cleaners with an awesome old school italian couple. The sweetest people ever. They've both passed on, Then I moved to Harlem and had an awesome cleaners on 152nd and Broadway.owned by an Asian family...the Lees. Literally saw the daughter grow from at kid in elementary school to a college student. Small shops are the backbone of NYC.

I’d think the shoplifting hurts the big chain stores more than the mom and pop. Rents are killing mom and pop, that and the big chains taking all the customers

Blame urbanists from the 1960s. They made it so small businesses who want to make a living here can’t. Fortunately NYC was one of the few places small businesses can flourish until the rampage of inflation and high rent costs start to now drive them away.

Dear @eddie, At 1:10 minutes, I agree, in part, with your sentiment.
Nowadays, one need not bring his art to the factory.
      People are struggling financially.
The CWA union kicked their own to the curb, causing crime -- coming to confused, confounded, and consternated citizens. China's redress is certainly congruent.

I'm someone who would be happy to pay "congestion pricing" (Congestion they created BTW) with a couple of caveats. Get rid of the bike lanes, outdoor dining shacks, ban ride shares & put the BQE back to the way it was in 2014.

      @@ThundersMcCoyNO!!!
You're the kind of people that don't care about anyone but yourself. People work, ride, walk, sits or hangout on these streets long before you were born. They moved out cause of the increase crimes, bums on the streets, toxic leads on cars and noise that gets bigger. Once the congestion pricing takes over, things are getting cleaner, quieter and develop new characteristic on the neighborhood. And these MaP will still thrive in years

TO NY small shop owners or workers. To California Fast Food workers: If you lose your jobs..... I suggest wellness. Hang around in Whole Foods parking lots. Lots of money, nice cars, nice unarmed people too. OH and YOGA studios....in strip malls in affluent areas. Sexy women come outside the door at night, all alone. You'll have time on your hands.....and I hope you pursue wellness.
