I own several Sport cars, Ferrari 488 Pista, Porsche 992, Portofino, but to be honest my i8 Roadster gives me the most excitement. The Ferraris are much faster, the 992 handles better, but the i8 gives me a very special feeling. Its a concept car for the street. A future classic for sure.
I can't believe you say " most hated". Ive owned them all, yes even the beloved e30 m3, but my I8 is a dream car! It is fast, handles incredibly, very comfortable seats, great on the road, doesnt beat you up with a stiff suspension, gets amazing gas mileage, and draws 4:47 a crowd wherever i go. Its an absolute wonderful car.
nobody hate it... when i get my first one in july/2014 no gas-station or supermarket was possible to enter without get questiond about the i8 and photorgraped. my funny quote was that the i8 was the car with most mobile-pics done from foreign people per km i ever had. and i own some nice cars (Z8/190sl/H1alpha/and M8comp but this M8 is thank god, only in leasing) best story i was out on a friday evening for dinner i came back and some lady has left a fat red lipstick kiss on frontfender. i am so in love with that car that i sold 2019 the 2014model and buy same one new. only a few us-hillbillys from every color here in youtube talk shit about the i8 . pat freeman has the best vids about the i8 here, he is a genius. . if you buy the i8 "as a racecar" like porsche or ferrari ect. you never get the sense ot this beauty right.
It’s easy to get in with the proper technique. Put your butt in first, then swing your legs in - nothing to it. Getting out you put your left leg out first, then push yourself out with your right leg. You are doing it backwards and making it look much harder than it needs to be. I’m 72 and have zero problems getting in and out, I don’t even think about it. The i8 may “only” get to 60 in 4 seconds, but the power delivery with the instant electric torque makes it feel very quick. i agree that there is no reason to dislike this car, and that the haters have most likely never driven one. There is really nothing else quite like it. I have owned one for 6 1/2 years and I still look forward to every drive.
This! Except being 42 year old myself I get in and out with help of my left arm: I'll use the high sill as a point for my left hand in order to push and pivot my butt in and out of the car with out "sliding" in or out. I personally want to preserve the side bolsters of the seat and the sill itself. Kind of hard to explain as I'm not a native speaker but I tried various different ways and this feels most natural, not awkward but rather fluent way. But with everything else: Car is not fast by numbers but in real life, real traffic situations the *instant* power and "get go" is something way more than by looking only the 0-60 time. The electric motor and the instant torque makes the car just go. The first 50-100 yards its much faster than "faster" sports cars, especially only 2WD ones. Anyone who´s driven a Tesla or such does know the INSTANT get go -feeling! The i8 gives you exactly that. And for the sports car and driving is much more than looking the max power or acceleration figures. Those did matter when I was like 15-30 year old kid, not any more =D
Best car I've ever owned. I've had s2000, 911, M3, Speed3,Golf R and more. The i8 though is the only one that I still love 100% after 6months driving it. It literally makes my day when i have to drive it, it also makes me feel like a kid. The combination of beyond cool, economy and reliability is amazing.
The doors are called "Scissor Doors", not gull wing doors. Easiest way to get in, for most people is to sit down of the sill and back-up into the seat and swing your legs in. In the Roadster with the roof panel removed should be easier, especially if your are a larger person.
I’d shoot for a 2019 if you can! They get some nice updated tech and apple car play too. And I think the electric drivetrain got an update that year with double the electric range too.
The people complaining about the performance probably drive a 15 year old Toyota/Ford with a 0-60 of 10 seconds. This cars performance is perfectly acceptable for use on public roads. I love my 2014 i8.
I agree. The performance 10 years ago was insane. Today, for the used price range of $70k for a mint condition i8, still VERY competitive. Considering this car has tech (carplay), looks, interior, and butterfly doors. MIGHT BE TH EBEST VALUE car ever.
@@blocksource4192 Mine doesn't have car play, that came with the LCI model in 2017+. You can get it aftermarket though. For comparison in regards to performance 0-60... BMW i8 (2014) = 4s (2014) Porsche 911 Cararra (2013) = 4.2s Ferrari California (2013) = 3.4s Lexus LFA (2012) = 3.6s Bentley Continental GT (2014) = 3.9s Ok, its not the fastest, but when coming down to 0. of a second then it can come down tot he driver. Its also very good on fuel and free road tax (none of the others are).
@@blocksource4192 My point wasn't about putting it in the same class as such. Some of these are supercars, where the i8 is not. My point was that its not as slow as people make out. They would not call any of the others 'slow', but do the i8 despite it not being far off other cars which are looked at as being fast cars.
You cant complain to much about the sound to much there are a few cars that are double the price of the BMW i8 that sounds and pur like a kitten. simple answer to that problem is to just get an exhaust.
The car is awesome but the price new ($150k-$170k) was a real hard sell. If they just put the M3 drivetrain in this with the hybrid assist and give it ~500hp, it would have been an instant classic. Sadly it just got a bad rep due to the 3 cylinder engine and cost.
' You look cool....' You never look cool getting in and out of the i8. The car looks cool. The people who drive including me... look like a walking midlife crisis...
You keep saying why the hate. If this car is less than 100k , there will absolutely 0% hate. But 140k+ is just crazily overpriced. When You spend that much what is the value You get back. There are plenty of performance car that can smoke it. In fact a much cheaper m2 can run way faster. For a sports car performance is absolutely the most important thing. This is not luxury car like an S class or a 7 series. 10 year old car at 50k seems ok but how much maintenance on it. I had a 10 year old 3 series, on an average I spent 3-4 thousand a year. Something keeps breaking. I would never buy a 10 year old bmw.
Sometimes you just have to take it for what it is like this car the Honda CRZ and even Mazda RX8. Don't compare it to the legends. Personally this is one of my dream ride but I would swap the 3 cylinder engine with a Wankel one so it would be a Wankel hybrid sports car

Those are not scissor doors js btw, scissor doors are on like the older lambos that go straight up and down js fyi
Butterfly doors mate
Absolute dream car. I love the look of it, performance aside. One day it will be mine, don’t care what anyone says
Get super bright under glow and drift kit for the wheels and boost the eletric motor
Looking at buying one now. 2017-2019.

I have a 2015 white with blue accents for an i8. Looks fantastic. Breaks necks everywhere I go with it. Can’t complain
I'm looking at buying one when i move back to Canada, but i heard a lot of little things go wrong with them, are you able to confirm this

Valvetronic recently released an exhaust (3 days ago) for the i8. Super loud and very good sounding. Like a diesel i6.
I just wanna know what’s the performance like after the battery runs out
I think it has a generator in back for rear wheel torque fill and charging the battery on the go.
No different. It has a generator that supplies power to the rear wheels.
Reliability seems good...its fast..looks sharp car...why they stop making it?

My dream car…Why because of X 🖤🖤LLJ
I’m a Audi lover, but I think i8 is one the most beautiful cars on the planet 🫡🔥 maybe to next summer 🙂
I hate this car cuz I'm still not able to afford it
Some day soon 🤞🏻
