Ignore BAD English advice from YouTube teachers

  • Stop learning vocabulary! Don’t learn grammar! Don’t say these 10 words!
Titles like these seem to get a lot of views, and that’s why TH-camr’s do it - but is it good advice, is it a good way to teach and more importantly for you, is it a good way to learn?

I’m so happy I could learn English before everyone and their mum was shouting at me what to STOP doing. Thank you for talking about one of the dangers of relying on social media content and the reason so many English learners are confused and overwhelmed

I usually don't click on a video like that, because I think it's kinda silly. Maybe if you speak English very well, you have good grammar, that could be a valid advice to boost your English up to an advanced level, but if you are learning from the very beginning, an advice like that could be a bit dangerous. 😂😂😂

It's a challenge for the TH-camr because the video has to look exciting, but very important not to mislead learners, I agree.

  • @hannofranz7973

I completely agree. There is a load of clickbait rubbish on youtube. Even if the aim to expand on vocabulary is worthwile in order to get you to use more than just the basic standard vocabulary, teaching based on don'ts isn't the best approach. It provides the whole learning process with authoritarian and highly unflexible features when individual freedom of choice and a more easy-going approach may be more sensible.

You're absolutely right. In my native Latvian language, we probably use about one-tenth of the words we learned at school.
When you're reading books, you need these more sophisticated words to understand what's going on. I don't know where else you've needed these words

I broke the barriers of English in my youth without showing signs of having that language in my head.

@@RobertAlexx You raise a really interesting point. The beauty of TH-cam for creators is the low barrier to entry; anyone can teach whatever they like with the potential for great reward. For learners, this provides an endless supply of free resources, but the quality is not guaranteed. It's up to viewers to decide with views, subs, likes and, in theory, the quality should rise to the top. In terms of traditional qualifications, in my experience there are plenty of highly qualified fools in all fields, education is no exception🙂.

Thank you Mr. D . A much needed reprimand to those fascistic TH-cam English teachers for whom it's either their way or the highway. They fail to recognize that many English words have more than one acceptable pronunciation and that people who pronounce words such as 'uncomfortable' and 'formidable' differently than they do are not necessarily wrong in their pronunciations. Banning the simplest and most often used words in the English language is not the best way to teach an E S. L. student to develop his or her language skills.
