Great video! Awesome that you’ve seen Cash live, wish I ever could’ve seen him! He died when I was only 3 years old, wish I’d been born earlier. He’s my favorite artist of all time, I have a tattoo of his autograph on my shoulder. The American Recordings are all such unique and beautiful albums, I really love all of them. One of my favorite songs of his Rick Rubin records is Spiritual (from AII, Unchained). I think it’s a very underrated song, Johnny Cash his vocals are really incredible on this song and while I know that he gave everything he got with every song he sung, for some reason it looks to me like Spiritual has something “extra”. His singing is really outstanding in that song. At least, that’s how I feel when I hear him sing it, the song always manages to make me cry. What do you think about Spiritual?
It’s an amazing song. Johnny Cash can sing spiritual songs because you believe him. He’s lived it. He’s honest and sincere. He acknowledges the dark side of life as well as the light. He’s amazing. The arrangement of the song is outstanding!
Thanks for the reply! Have you listened to his posthumously released album “Bootleg Vol.I Personal File”? It are all songs he plays acoustic only, they are recorded in the 70’s (73 I think). No clue why they didn’t release it back then because it’s a beautiful album. It shows however how much he wanted to do an acoustic album, and thank god that Rick Rubin gave him the opportunity to do so in the ‘90s.
All fantastic albums indeed man! I am almost in complete agreement with your rankings. The only changes would be for me would be with the top three. I would rank American IV as #1...American I as #2...American II as #3!
Cool ranking. You forget how many cover songs he actually does, but I think that's because he makes them his own. Cool that you saw him live. I bet that was amazing
@@ChrisPropfeMusicallyObsessed Yeah definitely. Whoever was taking those photos during that era really captured something special. Goes hand and hand with the stark music.
"First time I shot her, shot her in the side. Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died." My Mother's Hymn Book qualifies as its own Rubin-produced album too (confusing because it wasn't numbered). It was released independent of the Unearthed box set. Arguably, VH1 Storytellers (with Willie Nelson) qualifies too.
Brilliant video Chris! You are right, Rick Rubin really did bring him back from, dare I say it, the dead. His version of If You Could Only Read My Mind is one of his heartbreaking vocal performances ever. Other hights through the series are One, Solitary Man, The Man Comes Around, The Beast In Me amongst many many others. I highly recommend you youtube Nick Lowe talks about The Beast In Me. It tells how Nick wrote the song for him (4 years before he recorded it) and it's hilarious! All the best, Richard th-cam.com/video/Bzee8tQlfis/w-d-xo.html
@@ChrisPropfeMusicallyObsessed aw well, it just tells how Nick wrote the song for Johnny Cash while drinking copious amounts of wine. The interview was in 1990 so he actually wrote the song in the mid 80s. Nick himself recorded his own version for his album The Impossible Bird which was released the same year as Cash's version, 1994. I remember getting both CDs for Christmas that year.
For me
6. Ain't No Grave
5. Unchained
4. American 1
3. Solitary Man
2. Hundred Highways
1. Man Comes Around
Great ranking!
Great video. Love Johnny Cash 💜
Thank you! Big fan here too!

It was an amazing show. He is my favorite Country singer.
I would have loved if there was an art book with all the black and white photography from that Rick Rubin era.
That would have been very cool!
