Teddy Ruxpin Refurb Part 2 - Unfreezing Stuck Servo Motors

- Continuing my repair and refurbishment of a 1985 Worlds of Wonder Teddy Ruxpin. In this part I take Teddy apart to get his servo motors moving again to re-enable eye and mouth animation. There are complications and I end up swapping out parts with ones from another Ruxpin. I also clean the volume control to prevent crackling audio and take care of some general maintenance while he is in bits.
Thank you for your video! I’ve been really blue lately… suffering some depression. My husband surprised me by bringing me home a Teddy Ruxpin from a yard sale today. None of the animatronics were working, but his cassette player did. So, I came right to TH-cam and found your video. My Teddy not only has sound, but ALL of his animatronics are working now!! His frame inside his head was broken, but I used fingernail acrylic… the powder like they use at the salons… and I repaired the frame! He’s good as new! I was 15 when Teddy was released. I never had an interest in him. I never knew I wanted one until I had one! Lol! I love this bear! Thanks sooooo much for taking the time to make this video! ❤
Great series, this makes me want to take my Teddy from the box and fix him up. He was so hard for my parents to find the Christmas of 1985 here in the US that they made sure I kept him in the box. So in other words he was working perfectly when last played with probably sometime in 1986 but I'm sure he needs some repairs as they eyes and mouth always freeze up and usually the rubber belt on the player turns to goo. Thank you for these videos and for fixing Teddy up to be enjoyed again!
You have given me inspiration to attempt surgery on Teddy. I hate to work on things that other people have attempted to work on before. Teddy's back was already removed when I acquired him. The 4 screws for the back are missing. Any idea of what size I need?

I was able to get mouth and eyes working by just moving jaws and eyes manually up and down carefully but deliberately over and over again and everything came back to life with zero disassembly

screeching is dry bearings, small drop of oil will sort them
Can you do this without taking the whole face covering off? Or is there a way to get some oil up to important, screeching places? My mouth is particularly squeeky - not sure if top or bottom.
@@jarekmatthew8039 no idea I havent owned one since the early 90s, you might be able to see the motor shaft at each end of the motor, just put a small drop of oil on it and it will stop, you can get a oil pen which is used on model railways, I recommend gaugemaster oil pen.

I have a ruxpin that the Cassette wheel that has a dent or grove in the rubber and doesn't play the cassettes properly. It also does not move its eyes and mouth. Do you work on them or do you know someone that will work on them?

My teddy moves a second after turning him on, then does nothing. Same every time I turn it on. I don't want to tear it apart and investigate the problem. Perhaps you could tell me the most likely problem without my having to do that.
It’s probably an issue with the motherboard.
@@TeddyandGrubby I put my multimeter on each component of my teddy, and found the problem to be the speaker. It was changed, and all works as it should.
Also, I had run the batteries down with multiple attempts at making him work, so I also got more of those.

But I absolutely love mine! His cassette player works perfectly fine, but none of his animatronics worked. The frame inside of his face was broken and I fixed it with nail acrylic, you know, the powder kind that they use in the salons. He’s good as new now! After wiggling the barrels inside of his head, just like this gentleman showed in the video, my teddy works perfectly! I am as thrilled as can be!
Fantastic video and explanation. We are attempting our first refurbish on a 2nd Generation Teddy Ruxpin. Do you know if we could rebuild the servo motors?

My son's Teddy Ruxpin is 35years
old his eyes and mouth do not work. However watching your first part replacing the pinch roller I am not sure if I need to as I tested it closing the lid without the tape and it did continue to circulate, however when I insert the tape it does play until I close it fully, then it stops. Would you please advise me. Thank you.
Probably does need a new pinch roller it could be soemthing else but it might be good to replace it but if moves without the tape but not witht the tape then it probably is the pinch roller idk but it might be good to replace it idk but i think it might be rhe pinch roller
You can work wonders on that pinch roller with rubber conditioner. Just as we did with our stereo cassette decks.
How can I find part 1
I bought one recently and the tape plays fine- but the face wasnt moving and it wasnt even making noise. I checked the servos and theyre hard to move, theres no sound and no sign that it powers up? I read that the non movement could have killed the motors in the servos (hope im explaining this right). Is this true? Is there a way to find replacement motors or is it just a thing where ill have to replace the entire piece?
You could probably find similar servos that would fit it, maybe not an original, or try fiddling with the old. Or, usually old servos will still buzz if they are faulty, so it may have becme disconnected from the board, you could check that.
Hi are you able to fix my Ruxpin if I send him to you. When last used eyes and mouth worked but the tape player has since stopped functioning.
awesome stuff. i have one but the neck is completely broken off, how would you go about gluing the foam? im thinking a polyurethane type glue?
Not too horn in on the maker of the video, but I recently fixed my teddy. Actually, I just fixed him today in less than an hour and a half after watching this video. I used a hot glue gun to glue his foam into place. The original owner had tried to fix him and, the foam was ripped. Worked perfectly fine for me.

I may have asked this question on another one of your videos, and my question will probably demonstrate my lack of mechanical knowledge, but I wonder if using stepper motors from floppy disk drives would serve as good substitutes for motors that are too far gone to be repaired.
These are DC (direct current) motors driven by a control IC and using a variable resistor to give feedabck to the IC on the current position. Stepper motors are driven differently, and usually contain 4 or more sets of coils which have to be energised in sequence to change motor position. Have a read through the comments to my part 5b refurb video. Somewhere in there I think I mention that I couldnt get an exact modern equivalent, but could re-use the central rotor from a Ruxpin motor in a casing from 6v equivalent. Cleaning and replacing the spark quenching grease with some from the replacement, you end up with an electrically compatible refurbished motor which has brand new wiper contacts. I really should think about doing a video on that.

awesome job - even tho i knew everything you was talking about because i have opened up alot of mine - and yes i have did the unfreezing on alot of my bears and it does work - 2 of my teddy ruxpin they came to me untested - so i knew for a fact i would have to do the rubbing of the eye moters and mouth moter and it worked - I cant wait to see the video your gonna do about the replacement of the driver belt - very good job on this :) - I need to go threw some of my subscrips on here and remove some because i cant subscribe noone these days - If your probley wondering why i have not subscribed to you yet.
Hi workshop 1138, do you have a service repair shop? I have two teddy ruxpins, one brand new from the box that does not work and one from my youth to use as parts. Do you do repairs? Can I send you both to fix?

I saw someone else's video where they use WD-40 on the servos to unlock them do you recommend that??? I trust your opinion over his.
Hi, in the end of my part5b video, I show the motor contacts and mention the grease. In the comments section I mention the Mabuchi motor companys patent on a spark-quenching mildly conductive grease used to reduce arcing and wear on the motor contacts. I'd be a bit worried about blasting the motor contacts with wd40, purely because this would displace the original grease, or possibly react with it which might be damaging in the long term. As for the rest of the servo, if it got on the rubber wheels which move the face, then these could lose grip. For the internals of the gear housing, I cant see anything in the WD40s FAQs which would suggest that the plastic would get damaged. Thanks for your vote of confidence BTW

I'm pretty sure first and second generation are the same with the exception of the tape deck 3rd Generation Bear the 3rd Generation the same down from the neck as second but I'm only guessing haven't tried it yet

I'm looking on eBay for replacement parts bears and all I can find is 1st Gen and I have 2nd gen is the head Motors jobs near them that had the same between the two generations I know it's not on 3rd
Sorry, I can't really remember what type of motors work in what. Wiring of the servos to the molex connector may change with different versions of the PCB. There might be some clues in my videos where I measure voltages or resistance at the molex connectors, between different types of teddy. If the ebay listing shows a photo of the back, even with a cassette in, you should be able to tell from the colour of the hubs centres that the cassette reels fit on whether it is a metal or plastic tape deck. Best to get the same type as your bear is. If they have a shot with the open mouth, you may be able to determine if it has 2 or 3 servos in the head. The two servo ones have an overlapping plastic hinge at the back of teddys mouth, 3 servo ones have a gap between the back of the top and bottom jaw.

The servos will seize up again because you didn't lube the inside of the servos .are you an engineer ? you over think things and take the long route .you did not have to switch the servos from one to the other . you can get all the servos working

That's what I was thinking watching this is that they just need some lubrication and they'll quiet down and last. The old oil they used when they made them by now has dried up or just hardened and needs cleaning plus fresh added. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought why not just add oil instead of switching parts?
Do you even know what the inside of these things look like?
But not just any oil.....use 10 weight non detergent oil.
