As someone who has primarily MTH engines, you won’t be disappointed. They’re great runners even in conventional mode.
Also, you can access some select DCS features in convention mode using series of horn and bell button strokes. Can be found in the instruction manual. Mainly the PFA and the couplers.
Just a small warning, you can accidentally direction lock it as that’s one of the features, but it’s easy to unlock it. The manual with each engine will explain it easier than I can.
As for DCS, strongly recommend a used TIU/Remote combo if you find one at a decent price. Newer setups use the smartphone app.
I personally prefer the remote.
I concur. Most of my engines are MTH and they've been great runners. I'm a conventional operator myself and have stayed away from the "exotic" features as they just don't fit my needs.
I’ll have to check out the instructions. Although I’m more likely to just run it conventionally and ignore the features. I do have a dcs explorer I will probably hook up.
Thank You Dave what a great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice Pickups Dave...Miss this Show but Will be There This Fall.. Happy Railroading buddie 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks! The fall show is better one anyway. But yeah never fun to miss one
So fricken cool man you got lots of awesome finds there very cool bud
Thanks! I’m happy! Now if I could just get more time in the train room!
" it has to be done..." epic words to live by!!!
This is the way
Very nice haul Dave! Very cool MTH pieces!
Thank you kindly
I was there on Tuesday for the free shows at the Wyndham Gardens Hotel, the Reliance Fire Hall and the Free Purple Hall show. All were great and I picked up some excellent buys with some $5 quad hoppers, some $2 scale cars and my coup de grace a 1987 Lionel Burlington diesel brand new in the original box. I have attended York many times but this was my first attendance at the free shows and it was well worth my three hour drive. Nice video and good luck with your purchases and future videos. I'm looking forward tot he e-unit video.
I went to Wyndam Gardens too, fought that traffic. I bought a GG-1, 5 passenger cars, 3 box cars, a truck and 4 whistle activators...prices there were phenominal. Better than what I saw friday at the fairgrounds
@@blackrocks8413 Yep, that traffic was horrendous, took me 45 minutes to go about 400 feet to where the police made you turn off. Luckily that was Loucks road.
I’ll have to get to the pre shows one of these days.
Those B&O passenger cars are sweet! I just hope you don't go all non-conventional on us. 🤭
Thanks! No I still love conventional! I don’t worry about those engines, I know they will work. The electronic stuff is just something I’m trying to grow into and learn about
Great video Dave! Sounds like you had a great time again. You need to get those E7’s up and running to use with those beautiful passenger cars unless of course you have something else that matches those cars and pull them. As far as what you think you need to get into the game with, unlike stickers, what about your DAGRYFFYN Hobby Service Sign placed on a button with a pin that you can attach to your clothes? Your logo on a paper plate? A bottle/can coaster? Just a few ideas for you. Tom
I believe Dave's got some B&O F3's that'll look just fine with those passenger cars. Close enough!
Thanks for the ideas Tom! I have a set of E8s and F7s in addition to the E7s, so I have options!
Hey Dave...you hit home with the B&M RS3. One of my favorites being a local RR.
I had my eyes glued to it rolling until I realized it was at Nick's train room. I actually called Pete a while back and he did offer a terrific price. I couldn't decide on the RS3 or the newly released Railking US Navy switcher. I still haven't decided... I want both. 🤷 Great haul, awesome video. Thank you...😆
Thanks! I really like the engine and running it on Nicks layout was so much fun. Get them both!
It's ok, I just picked up a second hand MTH ATSF wood side caboose, and the first thing I did was drop it too. Luckily it was onto carpet and only like a 1.5 foot fall, but it was still a drop lol. Personally I'm glad the Kato SD45 I got didn't get dropped too, or the nice Walther's trinity 3 bay that is brand spankin new lol.
Stuff happens, luckily it's from a time when models were made to handle bumps and scrapes and be relatively easy to fix.
Happens to the best of us I guess! I dropped one of my n scale engines and it didn’t appreciate it!
Great haul Dave.
Thanks!
Awesome haul you got from York! That Boston and Maine alco rs3 looks pretty nice!
Thanks much!
Nice finds there! Especially with the B&O E8s and passenger cars. The RS3 was also another great choice Dave
Thanks 👍
Saw you with the TH-camrs on Fri hanging out by the Standard Gauge Layout. Nice engine, I did see some good deals
Thanks. 👋
Dave, nice haul I like the MTH engine have been reluctant to buy one as I on run in conventional and do not want to pay for features I would not be able to use. I was at the show on Thursday and Friday and saw Nick but I unfortunately did not see you. I go to Pete's Just Trains all the time it is a great shop and great people. On another not last spring was my first York and to me it seemed so much busier then this year. Hopefully in the fall I will run into you. Thanks for the heads up about Saturday as I was thinking of going as well but did not want to make the hour and a half trip besides my knees were barking a lot from Thursday and Friday. LOL
I understand you completely. I'm a conventional runner myself, I have bought some current production engines with electronic "gee-whiz" features I'll never use but the reason I bought the articles was I wanted some prototypically correct models of particular engines. Now that that's out of the way it's strictly Post-Wars from now on, maybe some Pre-Wars if the price is right.
To be honest I haven’t run it at home more than once so far. I think it’s gorgeous and I’m glad to have it. But will it turn out to be worth the money. Time will tell. Maybe of if I get DCC set up I’ll run it more. Who knows!
It was great meeting you at the York show!! Im Trey if you remember lol. Around early April my train club Yadkin and Catawba Model Railroad, hosts the NC Railroad Expo in Hickory you should check it out!
Nice meeting you too.
I found some low cost Lionel post war 3469 coal dump cars at prices the lowest I ever acquired them at 7 total $5 - $10 and one with box @ $15. I don’t care about boxes so gave it to my buddy that does. Sunoco tank car with a coil coupler caboose for $5 pair. Some reasonable prices on Lionel post war parts in orange building as long as one is willing to sort thru containers of parts. This show is so much better and less expensive than ebay shopping. Sounds like you had a couple good days of shopping.😊
Plus at a show you can SEE the article before you buy it. Personally I always want to see the piece first and only mail-order (for lack of a better term) when I absolutely-positively can't find it anywhere else and aren't likely to.
Sounds like some fantastic finds!
We want something with your signature! Now for the Boston & Maine RS-3. To dirty them trucks down a bit, just mix 1 part black model paint (latex or water based) with 6 parts water. This makes a good wash. Clean the parts being washed if needed, and fully dry. The wash will settle into the recesses and make them darker. use your paint brush to soak up any extra wash you don't want on that coat. Let the paint dry between washes. Your can do up to 6 or 7 washes to really darken a project. Seal with a satin clear coat if you wish (recommended). Advanced modellers use different colored washes for effect. View real photographs for color ideas. Try a bit of dry brushing afterwards to highlight. I use this trick on ore car loads to good effect! Great video Dave!
I was thinking of suggesting just a coat of flat black paint over that odd silver finish (In the real railroad world it wouldn't last long!) but there's something to be said for your more artistic approach.
Great tips! I’ll have to try it out.
And I’ll sign whatever you like!
just about burst out laughing when you talked about looking for a beater truck to customize. I'm always picking up Marx searchlight cars to get roller pickups for making customs. Then I end up restoring the car instead of cannibalizing it! I have well over 30 of them now! Hoping to try to finally make the show this fall, Lord willing!
Haha that sounds like something I would do. I wonder if I’ll ever get a truck for the spot or if there will just have to be a new one instead.
Congratulations on your treasured finds.
Thanks so much!
Keep up the good work, maybe someone will make you some stickers one day
Thanks! I really need to take care of that!
Awesome haul, you should try to 3D print interiors for those passenger cars. Nice job with the 3rails4dads sticker! Nice Railking engine, those are great value locomotives!
Thanks! I’ve been looking at full interiors and also parts, I was thinking some nice detailed interiors would really look nice with these cars.
Dave, you have discovered a whole new world. Lots to be said for dcs. Conventional is always fun, dcs adds another level to the fun. Take your time and you will find a tiu and handheld controller that is not horribly pricey. Like that railking diesel.
Thanks! Hopefully I can find the equipment I need. And then I can finally get everything wired properly
That was an excellent video, enthusiasm is a good thing. :) B&O kind of where I've headed. A history thing. Pennsylvania & NYC have been the focus, but funny thing is; CSX with it's root in B&O has shifted my focus. In the grand scheme of things, despite less favorable topology & route, B&O won the test of time. NYC & Pennsylvania got hacked up between Norfolk Southern and CSX :)
Thanks so much! Sounds like you’ve thought about it more than I have. I just see pretty engine! lol.
Thanks for sharing your haul from the York TCA spring show, Dave. Brings back memories of train journeys from Cleveland to Baltimore on the B&O as a kid. Very good looking passenger set. The Boston and Maine Alco RS3 is a super acquisition! It's a grand looking diesel and I agree the truck plates are too bright...could be weathered a bit (maybe a lot!). Thanks for the run on Nix (Nick's?) layout.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video.
Beautiful cars love the nomad 👍 looks like you had a lot of fun I seen you met up with my friend Zach @countrybunkers 👍 great looking passenger car that engine is sweet love the color , love that horn motor sound Great purchases 👍 I would like get a sticker with your TH-cam pics but what ever u come up with is great , Thanks for sharing your experience at York
Thanks so much. Had a great time hanging out with Zac and friends.
As soon as I finish redoing my logo, I hope to get some stuff done
Cool stuff Dave, like the new road name!
Thanks!
Those E7s are going to look great leading the streamline cars , looking forward to you getting them running on your layout
Thanks! I really like them. You and me both!
Another great video Dave! I have 5 Proto 3 MTH S Scale engines. I need the dcs controls for my layout. I also have three American Flyer Legacy/TMCC engines I run with cab 1 control. This all started when I was 2 years old and got my first Lionel set, then age 3 got my First American Flyer set. 65 years later and still going lol! Hope to make York someday before I die! Great video! Thanks for sharing as always! Chris @Cbtrainnut!
Thanks Chris! I hope you get to York. It’s so much fun
The B&M is my favorite railroad, so i was pretty happy to see you pull that engine out of the box! Great video per usual!
Thanks! It’s got an awesome paint scheme
Nice haul Dave it’s always great seeing you at shows. And duh of course we want dagryffyn hobby merch!!
Thanks and great hanging out. Ok well I’ll get on it! I’m doing a little redesign of the logo and I’m having software issues, but as soon as that’s done!
New engine is cool, but the Red Skins Foot Ball colors nice
👍
Wow Dave, that Boston & Maine RS-3 is gorgeous! Of all the first-generation diesel paint schemes the B&M's was one of the best and looked great on any unit it was applied to. $320 on that one was a VERY good price indeed and MTH products are top-quality. Most of my collection (Accumulation?) are MTH products and I've never been disappointed with any of them!
That four car Williams streamlined B&O passenger set was an absolute steal for $100. I'm not too suprised the passenger profile strips have fallen off, the cars are probably at least 20 years old and most likely the old contact cement's dried out. Not a hard fix at all. Just so you know in 2012 the suggested retail on that set was $359.95. There was an add-on set of two cars made to go with it which listed at $179.95 so that'll be something you should keep an eye out for.
For what it's worth though back then I never saw any Williams products going for list price.
I'm one of those people who don't keep boxes for individual pieces of rolling stock (space won't allow it) but I'd definately make an exception for that vintage Atlas box! I've never seen one like that! Maybe it's not unique but it is in my experience, I've been in an out of train shops and shows for 30 years and I've never seen one!
I don't blame you for not wanting to spend $700 on that Ontario & Western diesel. I wouldn't either. BUT if you're looking for O&W engines both Lionel and MTH made O&W Camelbacks! I picked up a good used Lionel O&W Camel at Henning's for $250 back in 2019. They're out there, you just got to keep your eyes open. MTH also made RailKing O&W "Mountain" type steam engines which were pretty reasonable.
Exhibitors leaving York early. Well, I've got contacts with the Eastern Division of the TCA (I won't say who they are to protect their privacy) and they tell me they're really between a rock and a hard place on that subject. They realize it takes hours for the major exhibitors to set up and hours to tear down and many come from a great distance as well. They could enforce the "No tear down before 2:30!" rule with a vengeance BUT they don't want to upset the exhibitors to the point they don't come back.
(They've got enough of a problem with Lionel not coming as it is, too many demands TCA can't meet. Long story.) Also I've been told the Saturday attendance at the show is pretty anemic, as hard as that is to believe. So some exhibitors don't see the point of hanging around until the last minute. It's a situation with no easy answers when they want to be fair with the exhibitors and show visitors as well.
Dagryffyn Hobby merchandise? Well you can start with stickers and if you do I promise I'll sticker some coal cars and mix 'em in with my Public Service coal cars! Dagryffyn T-shirts would be just the thing for the gym! A Dagryffyn Hobby sweatshirt might be just the thing for a Fall train show fashion statement and perfect for that Autumn chill. So many possibilities!
I couldn't make this show, the finances wouldn't allow it, but I'm planning on making the Fall show!
(I really don't need anything but as you said, the show's a ball, pure fun any way you look at it and you never know who you'll run into!)
Fun video, thanks for posting and well done on the purchases!
Thanks Wayne that all makes sense about Saturdays. I’m sure there are many many factors I’m not aware of. Even still I enjoy walking around on Saturday when it’s quieter, also a great time for deals, if there is anything left!
I want the e-unit tool video now, yesterday, even! Anticipation will make me wait! Dag nabbit! 😮
Sorry for the delay! I really need to do that one!
Dave it was great meeting you at York on Thursday...congratulations on your recent acquisitions, all nice pieces. Best to you, Bill Thomas
Great meeting you too Bill.
It has to be done. Haha A T-shirt or a cool little billboard would be neat.
Oh a billboard! I like that!
Dave went to York and KICKED BUTT. You STOLE that Williams passenger set!!!!!
Even if it needs a little TLC it's a fantastic purchase for $100.
A word to the wise, don't overlook Williams products. They were always a great value for the money and with little or no collector interest most can be had for very reasonable prices.
Yeah buddy! I’m thrilled with the Williams cars. I may add interiors or just put silhouettes back, not sure yet, but either way, I love them,
I always love your videos. Thank you for your time. I live in southern Maine and the big train shows are just too far away for me to attend. Alas! I would be VERY upset if I showed up on Saturday to find it was in effect a half day show for half of the vendors so thanks for pointing that out.
Thanks so much! Have you been to the Amherst show in MA? Looks like it’s about 3 hours from Portland. That’s a great large show.
@@dagryffynhobby I just looked it up and it was in January. I will keep it in mind for next January (annual only). Thanks for the tip. I am only an hour north of Boston but no big train shows there that I know of. Strange.
That MTH 0-8-0 needs the tender to power it. If you have another MTH tender with the same code letter you can use it on this one to see if it runs like normal. Otherwise you will have to look inside to see how it is wired and see if the plug in the back can have power to it to make it run, DC power or use a bridge rectifier. Great collection Dave! Note: my experience with MTH engines is not so happy in some ways due to their unique reverse board combination sound system electronics. I have one dead one and one that is stuck in forward only. One thing for sure, be sure to have the battery in the unit charged up well, and the correct one before powering it. I have more news on them later.
There is nothing in the engine or tender other than the motor, it’s been completely stripped. I’ll come up with something to do with it eventually
Boston and Maine rules. One of my favorite railroads 😎👍!
Nice 👍
So great to finally meet you! Folks like you make me wanna go back just for the opportunity to see you all again! The trains are cool, but you guys make it worth the trip!!
It was great meeting you too. We have some really great people in this hobby!
Great video Dave. You got a lot of nice items. Congratulations on your first DCS engine, that RS3 is nice. Those passenger cars are really nice. I was laughing at it being your most expensive engine.
Thanks Corey. Yeah one day I’ll actually spend some serious money on an engine. I wouldn’t hold my breath though.
Went on Friday. Found two cabooses I was looking for at Gryzboski's. I wasn't keen on his price, but I'd been looking so long I had to buy it. Would cost the same on ebay with shipping. Somehow I didn't see a single youtuber this time. No idea where they were, although honestly I don't get too excited to see them. I'll nod or say hey while walking by lol. I'm a nobody to them.
You know, as far as prices go you just have to do what you have to do. I wanted a Jersey Central Camelback for quite a few years, Lionel or MTH didn't matter. When I finally ran into a used one at a Greenberg show I paid more than I wanted to but you just don't see them anywhere. Just the way it is.
Two cabooses is nice. Even at the same price sometimes it’s just nice to get your hands on it before you buy.
And as a TH-camr I can say you are not nobody to us, at least as far as I’m concerned, every single person that takes time to watch and comment is important.
I would totally rock a T-Shirt with your logo!
Nice! Soon hopefully!
Saturday was my first time at York came from MA had about 2 hours before everyone started packing up and I was the only one walking around looking for stuff😂 I guess the party was over
Veteran York attendees both exhibitor and visitor tell me Saturday attendence is pretty anemic. They have no explanation as to why that is. Every other Saturday train show I've gone to is usually hopping until an hour before closing. Makes no sense.
All the way from MA for Saturday?! Oh man. Don’t get me wrong I love being there on Saturdays but yeah, anemic is right
So Dave, are you going to be our go-to B&O channel? I mean, Pennsy, NYC, NS, FEC, ACL, C&O, and Conrail are all taken! 😄
Haha, probably not, I’m not that focused and I’m easily distracted. Who knows what I’ll like next…
PE tools (wheel puller) is awesome. I used it on my 671 engine go replace the drive gear.
Nice. I have to finish up a few projects then I hope to put it to work!
My Uncle was an engineer on the Boston and Maine, also my grandfather was a conductor on the New York Central. I love the way you are putting scenery , trees and grass and buildings on your layout. You have done an awesome job.
Oh that’s cool.
Thank you so much
It was a great show this year. Sorry I missed you.
It really was. There is always next time
Wow! That B&M is gorgeous. And thanks for the sticker shoutout.
Thanks and of course!
🤠🚂🖐
👍👍
Enjoyed the video. The RS 3 is a sharp looking engine, congratulations on your purchase. Also I was wondering about a wheel puller and now you got one. I’m restoring my dada’s Lionel 1666 steamer and I’ve learned that the wheels are out of time. So l’m assuming l need to pull some wheels to re align them.
Thanks! If the wheels are not properly quartered, then yes they will need to be pulled and aligned properly. Might be worth replacing the axles too.
I have a vintage pu that my dead dog chewed up. It's in a box waiting to go back on the layout. Road Champions are true 0 scale. Road Signature are 027 sized. Small enough to fit in service bay of Plasticville gas station. Beep people fit in them w/ o amputation. They also fit inside the MPC car carrier.
Oh good info. Thanks!
@@dagryffynhobby Your welcome. Diecast Direct is where I got them. I like the way Road Signature cars just slide in to a MPC car carrier. I put black duct tape on the inside of plasticville cars to simulate windows tinted. Light weight cars l put on the top rack of the carrier. A little bit of paint makes them look ok.
I have the Lionel version of that Northern Pacific engine same road number of 1178 and everything!
Nice 👍
I still see B/M passing through Exeter, New Hampshire.
Nice!
The show needs to be Fri / Sat / Sun rather than Thurs / Fri / Sat. That would alleviate any issues with attendees not being able to make it until the weekend and being greeted with vendors packing up early
It has been discussed but rejected by the TCA and your guess as well as mine as to why. Possibly the bigger exhibitors won't go for it? Maybe the York County Fairgrounds want them out by Saturday afternoon? Maybe because Saturday attendance has been historically pretty anemic? (It's true.) Who knows? In my opinion the Saturday-Sunday (with maybe Friday thrown in) timing used by other train shows makes more sense but it is what it is.
That being said I've been to the York train show myself and am really looking forward to going again but in my opinion as good as York is it's not the be-all and end-all of train shows. If there's local train club sponsored shows in your area by all means patronize them. Same for regional shows like Greenberg's or the "World's Greatest Hobby On Tour" shows. You have just as much a chance at finding what you're looking for at a local show as you might anywhere else. Just saying, you know?
This might just be one of those things we never get an answer to. I’m sure it can be argued either way.
There's been a number of very understandable complaints (for lack of a better term) concerning the Satuday hours of the TCA York show. I won't say any more about the subject than I have already BUT as someone who's been going to train (and other kinds of) shows for a good 40+ years let me give all a bit of advice.
Do your homework before you go. By this I mean in addition to location and admission costs check hours of operation. If it's a Saturday-Sunday show be advised if the show closes Sunday at 3:00 its a safe bet exhibitors are going to start tearing down at 2:00, especially if it's a long drive home. On Saturday the York show closes around 3:00 so that should set off some "alarm bells" of what you're likely to find if you get there at any time after 12:00 so be prepared to be disappointed. That's just the way it is. And in this age of the Internet and websites getting the information is easy.
Just saying folks. That's all. The best thing to do is take the day off Friday and go then.
Makes sense and I agree. There are smaller shows I go to that are open till 2 or 3 but anytime after 11:30 is a crap shoot. If I can’t get there early, I don’t go.
@@dagryffynhobby Same here Dave. For one-day small shows I try to be there within a half-hour of opening time. Open at nine, I'm there at nine-thirty. And if the one-day show's more than a two-hour drive away I usually won't bother with it. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't worry about it.
is your new 0-8-0 set up for 2 rail operation?
Nope. It’s really not set up for anything. Nothing inside but the motor
Don't u hate when u drop a new car or engine is the worst to drop I ones drop a car on the floor I was so mad but it did brake good video nice models trains
I don’t like dropping anything but a new item is the worst! I am a tad clumsy, so it does happen.
Oh brother, I dropped a Williams passenger car two weeks ago and broke one of the trucks. It hit the floor at just the right angle to do the damage. My fault entirely. Luckily I was able to find a replacement truck but I've been doing the "HOW could I be so stupid!" mantra since!
@wayneantoniazzi2706 wow I remember last trainsshow I just got a engine and I got home to look at and as I was taking out the box I drop it on the floor the Front and the steps it was my fault I was to Excited when u go to a trainsshow or it Christmas It a feeling u can explain
@@michaellindsey8769 Jeez! I hope it wasn't too badly damaged!
@wayneantoniazzi2706 not too bad
Oh no! Not an MTH! I'll put you on our prayer request. Haven't you been watching Nick with all his problems keeping them MTH engines working? In his last video, his engine was smoking really well until it wasn't when the fan motor failed. Maybe they just weren't conditioned to work with the new layout wiring and power supplies. It must be like owning a Maverick Hybrid. It's been a PITA, but I absolutely love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. At least it's a great looking and sounding RS-3. The passenger cars are a pretty sweet deal, though, and the other items all make it worthwhile. Enjoy, it's sure to put a smile on your face, which makes it priceless.
I know! I’ve been influenced by those who wish to destroy me! I’m not worried about the engine, it’s brand new with a warranty. If it breaks after that, well then we will see. I dont know that I’ll be buying more. We will see.
@dagryffynhobby LOL, you just pointed out all the same things a Maverick Hybrid owner rationlizes when buying one. It's heavily laden with high tech computer gadgetry also. So far all the recalls have been corrected with computer software updates.
