Insane 5 mile guess from a single letter! - I saw the sign #2 [PLAY ALONG]

  • More fun on this new map, including a crazy guess in round 2 which put me 5 miles from the marker and all I really had to go on was the letter K. Perfect score still up for grabs, if not, last week's effort of 24,127.
PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to TH-cam to watch my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!

Quick tip for the first map: If you think you're in France, check the phone number. If it's 10 digits (2X5) and start with 01,02,03,04,05 then you're in France. Then cut the map in 4
If it starts with 01: Paris
If it starts with 02: North West
If it starts with 03: North East
If it starts with 04: South East
If it starts with 05: South West

The French numbering system is really easy to learn and very helpful. 01 = Paris and surrounding areas, 02 = NW of the country, 03= NE, 04= SE and Corsica, 05= SW. The point at which all 4 corner zones intersect is in the very middle of the country, not around Paris

Round 1: Didn't bother looking around for Monteaux much, just clicked in the north between Amiens and Saint-Quentin. 4091 points.
Round 2: I was on a similar train of thought as you, except I went for Poland rather than Slovakia/Czechia. Clicked a place called Chojnice because GMaps annoyingly shows me the German names of places and that German name is apparently Konitz. 3604 points.
Round 3: I used the compass to find the correct street, it's the only one in Fatick that's going in a north-and-very-slightly-west direction. It only has one side street coming in at that angle without continuing on the other side, so the exact spot was relatively easy to pinpoint. 5000 points.
Round 4: Saw the church and the cliff and felt reminded of the Meteora monasteries. I knew I had seen them on GMaps before, but it took me five minutes to find them. Since we were in a town, I clicked Kalabaka nearby. Didn't even notice the graffiti before watching your video. Bit annoyed I didn't bother looking at Kalabaka more closely, since I could have easily found the exact location. 4999 points.
Round 5: I knew Babahoyo from my work for a cycling race design contest I participated in. Surprised you didn't at least know Guayaquil, once the largest city of Ecuador (Quito has caught up in recent years). 5000 points.
    22,694 points overall.

I am delighted that I got a perfect score for Kalabaka - the sigma on the blue sign above the graffiti gave it away as Greece for me. I play each round before I watch you, so I also enjoyed the fact that you said 'look at that!' looking down the street, I said to myself 'just wait 'til you look behind you, mate' and you were as gobsmacked as I was at the place. In the end though, I still didn't beat your total score, picking the Amazon delta for the last round (because of the whacking great river you failed to spot, as well as the sun direction which made it southern hemisphere) meant I scored badly in the last round... great content as always (even if I'm a bit late to the party on this one)...

Round 2 - First thought was Poland, but I happened to see a town in Lithuania that started with K and went for it. Big, big mistake. 2990.
Round 3 - As I was scrolling around Senegal I saw the border for Fatick provence and then found the city. I looked for a north-south street with an intersection that matched the image and actually managed to get the exact spot. 2m off! 5000.
Round 4 - The fonts on the signs made me thing of Greece right away. Spent ages scrolling through the mountains of Greece looking for Kalabaka but couldn't find it. Eventually guessed near Kalamata 'cause that seemed close. Should have just guessed in the middle of the country. 4118.
Round 5 - Saw Guayaquil in the back of the bus early on and guessed Ecuador (Guayaquil has been in the news recently). Soon as I zoomed in I saw Babahoyo. Guessed on the biggest road heading north into Babahoyo from Guayaquil but was a bit too far south. 4994.

13:46 It wouldn't actually matter if you were looking north or south, the road would be going the same way. The compass was at about 1 o'clock in the direction you were looking. If you were looking north, that would mean you were facing about north-north-west, and if you were looking south that would mean you were looking south-south-east. Either way the road is bearing slightly north-west/south-east.
What actually happened was you got the road and compass direction mixed up. You read the road as your north, and the compass pin as the road direction. Since the compass pin was at about 1 o'clock, you thought the road was going north-north-east.
Great video as always, just wanted to clear that up since it might prevent you from worrying about which direction you are facing when figuring out road orientation in the future.

This was an interesting challenge, but unlike the GeoDetective challenges, "ISTS" can't really be 5k'd without moving. r1 you made the normal mistake Brits make of mispronouncing Montreux, which usually leads to confusion, but pulled out a good guess. r2 you're surely right that whoever made the map intended for the town name to be visible. r3 you misjudged the angle of the road slightly, but this was difficult to 5k even in moving mode. r4 required a leap of faith to believe that the graffiti was the name of the town. I think it was obvious that the signs were in Greek, although Vlakava (which means Romania I think - an old English name for Romania is Wallachia) is a bit odd. But it was worth doing the challenge just to find out about Greece's answer to Mount Rushmore. r5 I can't really defend you - Guayaquil is such a major city - although ISTS does start to play tricks with your mind after a while! All the best.

Stumbled on this today. Don't really know if this is a coincidence or not but I find it funny that the bit of advice that you said you were given about the clue being in front of you is the first thing you always ignore. Babahoyo was clearly the the name of the town you were looking for but you spent so much time looking for towns with qs in them.also the name of the greek place was graffitied on the wall but you dismissed it because it was graffiti. Even though those were literally the first clues given to you. I think you just outsmarted yourself.

round 3: found fatick, placed the cursor just a bit farther than tom.
round 4: looked at the street signs and realized it’s greece, found kalabaka really quickly and looked around for the street name. found it, found the church, realized i was in a very known area in greece, 5000 pts.
round 5: the sign looked spanish. looked at the sun and saw we were in the southern hemisphere. looked at the bus, saw guayaquil and realized we were in ecuador. looked around between that and quevedo (from the bus) for babahoyo, found it but couldn’t get the exact street. 4999 pts.

You need to learn the difference between Greek and Cyrillic alphabets! It was so obvious it was Greece based on the writing.
And for the last round I was convinced it was Mexico as well until I saw the names on the bus. I knew Guayaquil was one of Ecuador's biggest cities so I looked around there and saw there was a N-S route between Guayaquil and Quevedo and then found the town on the sign.

Nope, it's the big fuck-off letters on the building he found imediately. When you change the date on the StreetView (don't know if that's possible on GeoGuesser) back to Juli 2018 you can clearly read "TECHNIS Kojetin spol. s.r.o.", which is both the city and the exact spot in one sign.
