It is really awesome that you showing us what is going on in the worms' castings, soil and mostly your enthusiasm. Thank You! In one book by Henry Miller, he mentioned the worms are the most useful creature by nature. He ended up saying: Go figure! I did and i am having a wonderful time taking care of my pets.

Thank you very much for the video. You showed me the soil biology in a nutshell with out a long lecture where I cannot stay awake. I enjoyed that and subscribed your channel.
So glad to hear ya talk about microbe period....I'm really hoping that i can encourage others to start looking harder at the smaller things of life as oppose to the grander things like the stars. I kinda think that we really don't deserve to know what's above us until we can better understand and respect what's below us that we really haven't even scratched the surface of. LoL.....you sound like a little kid with a new toy of discovery. I keep telling people that I'm gonna get a good microscope. They want boats and motorcycles and I want a damn good microscope. None the less....their left confused by me.
Ciliates are the largest of the protozoa and the least numerous. They consume up to ten thousand bacteria per day, and release plant available nitrogen. Ciliates use the fine cilia along their bodies like oars to move rapidly through soil. www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/detailfull/soils/health/biology/?cid=nrcs142p2_053867
Its one thing to talk about these things but when you have a chance to show first hand what your talking about makes it even better. Especially when you find something unexpected your excitement level magnified(no pun intended) 10x
I love your channel. I am sure in person and gardening style we might have some difference - but agree on enough. Watching your whole back catalogue. Lots of the shows online are of poor quality, misinformed and claim there is no evidence when there is loads just on you tube alone!
Wanted to know what has been the change in pest resistance since using this method. noted your tomatoes disease free, noted you made comments less pests, noted your squash you plant late in season and beneficial protected, but your corn not so easy with moth.
The Corn is not due to these moths fly up from the southern states hundreds of mile away. They will arrive by the thousands some years. tomany to battle.
Are you taking college courses on all this stuff? How did you become so knowledgeable? This was really cool to see. I love all the science we're exposed to as growers. I hope to one day get a proper education in these kinds of subjects. But for now, this does the trick. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks for asking. There are a large group and growing fast of farmers that us no fertilizer of sprays ( organic or non ) that are teaching each other though guidance from DR. Elaine Ingham.. soil scientist to grow soil using the SOIL FOOD WEB.( Search TH-cam speeches she has..AMAZING ).
I have a crude worm farm in an old garbage can. The bin is large enough to take the worms through the Texas heat and whatever cold we get. No separations. Just sieve the material when I want some. When I set up grow bags in early spring for peppers I added a few worms to each bag along with some not fully composted compost. Periodically, I fed them a treat of banana. Haven't given them since June. When I dumped bags the other day to recycle the pot mixture the bags had many worms. Had a little life cycle going on in the grow bags. 🙂
Wow! this is the best video I have ever seen, this is incredible, You make me want to be a scientist, I like this very much. I never took up biology, but you made it fun. Thank you for sharing I can learn a lot from you, you make it simple. plus, you are a great teacher. Please show more. Also, I like to dream about this, you showed me a great picture of what is going on in compost. land.
Awesome video. What is the shelf life of wormcastings? I cannot set up a bin inside my house, so I am thinking of having a bin in my unheated shed for about 8 months of the year. In late fall I can retire the worms to the garden beds. Can I save those casting to use in my seed starting medium the next spring?
It's a ciliate with the hairs. If you start seeing lots of them then it's starting to go anaerobic. Anymore than 3-5 in a frame then something gas going on. I seen some good flagellates in there too! . Love to see other people using the scope!! Good work.
I AM ORGANIC GARDENING first one could be but wasn't moving hard to tell. The second microbe I seen had cilia. Usually they move really fast like cars. This guy was full. 1 or 2 is fine. But 3-5 in slide shows something's going on. Keep up the good work.
Hi Mark. You can see a very educational talk from Elaine Ingham about ciliates on Drake's channel where he has posted a series of videos from a soil class she gave in Hawaii. She talks about ciliates in the first video starting at about 53:40 Here is the link. th-cam.com/video/a5Lbag-4Dew/w-d-xo.htmlm27s
I've just discovered Dr Ingham and after watching everything I can find on yt, I believe she'd be proud of your presentation ❤️ Do you think the inputs will impact fungal content? I have access to lots of wood shavings I can use as worm bedding, but I'm not sure id they're better in the worms or as mulch on the garden.
Dr Ingham is a amazing person. She help me so very much understand soil biology 8 years ago. In those year year no fertilize. sprays... etc. Working with nature. Do you mean wood shaving or wood chips? Shaving compress down very easily and will not let water to flow though it...

Ah, the mad scientist and his microscope! 😊 As per a previous comment, this is just like my high school biology class. But back then I was uninterested. Now I understand why I should have been interested. What I think would be interesting is doing this with pure worm castings. Would you expect different results?
A drop or two of some food coloring would add all kinds of contrasts. If you're looking for lab equipment keep your eyes on estate sales or auctions. One can find state-of-the art equipment for almost nothing because nobody, even the auction house, knows what "it is"..
If I grow a cover crop and cut it down, how long will the creatures that are dependent on living roots survive. Can I plant immediately and keep their numbers up.
Very cool to see these creatures. I don't till, I lightly dig into the top soil and remove weeds. I am doing some no dig experiments thins year that is going well. I'll go full no dig at some point.

Yes, They are easily good up to or more than a year. and even up to two years. Just keep dry ( very little moisture is fine )
It's a ciliate with the hairs. If you start seeing lots of them then it's starting to go anaerobic. Anymore than 3-5 in a frame then something gas going on. I seen some good flagellates in there too! . Love to see other people using the scope!! Good work.
Hello, Thank you for writing. Are you speaking about the very first one the is very round? as a Ciliate?

so cool to see you using earthworm castings and showing them under the microscope!
That is one ADVANTAGE you have in your product that glandula organic fertilize does not have...ENJOY
Awesome 🌱 This was !!! Have Worms and Casting 🦋 This was informative and Exciting 🐢 No Worm emoj. But beyond excellent 🌱
THANK YOU. And you would think by now they would have a worm emoj.
Thank you so much for that Mark
THANK YOU for always watching.
Thanks for a great video my friend, I enjoyed it and learned a lot. What size screen do you use for sifting the material to get the finished castings?
Loved this video
THANK YOU very much.
Hi Mark, What microscope and magnification are you using to see the above?
400 power mag. The microscope is from Amscope.com . SKU: B120C-E1 . Best to shop at Walmart or Amazon for better price.
Wow, just wow!!!
Love your channel
THANK YOU so very much. Love sharing.
What site are you using to identify micro-organisms? I am very interested to know more. Thank you!

@@iamorganicgardening what I have is shavings from a wood lathe. Sometimes its sawdust texture and sometimes its ribbons.
I would mix in used coffee grounds to keep it all from sticking together. Try first on a small scale to see how well it works
What microscope are you using

Lol, just kidding. Pretty cool :)
So cool!
THANK YOU...Enjoy
So can I bring in bacteria and microbes into my pot simply by adding worm castings? How can I make it better for them to migrate to my soil?
Yes, worm casting is a great way. The hard part about growing in pots is too keep the flow moving. Adding hand full of fall leaves is helpful.
