*Consolation Prize* . The concept of the consolation prize is spot on. I enjoy my thrifting adventures and have lived with a few "place holders". I have a varied collection of home decor pieces, however, as I've honed in on my style, there's a lot that no longer serves my mix. You have presented many great questions for one to ask themselves prior to making a purchase. Regardless if it's new or pre-loved, I have to love it , and have a vision for styling it. I enjoy the challenge of re-styling with items I have on hand.

Anne this is what I have done since last year. I’m doing the same thing. I have been asking myself do I need it. I know that I would like it but, I just can’t justify spending money on something that I already own. I also have given away so many things which is fine. Now, I think about it for a while and then decide if I should buy it. I notice that I really don’t need it. Another thing is that I don’t go to thrift stores as often because I know that I will bring it home. Great 👍 video ☺️✨🙏❤️

@@dellahayden5606 yes!! That’s great! Just like me. My daughter loves thrifting and she comes home with bargains and finds 3 times a week (clothing). I don’t think she can wear it all!! She’s always challenged to organize and clean her room. I told her leas clothing, less mess:). But she’s young yet… she’ll learn.

Several years ago I became obsessed with a utube channel that was adding a bit of glitz here and there in the decor sooooo, I purchased some glitz and tucked it in here and there and lived with it because I thought I had to. Don't have any of it now!! Also have learned that as we age, remember I will be 83 this summer, comfort level must come into play. And so, I purchased a traditional sofa that while I am not wild about, I watch my sweet husband claim it every afternoon for his nap. Having said all that, I love my prim collections and find the hunt to be what I look forward to.

This was such a thought provoking video. It touched on so many good points and hit upon many of the mistakes I've made. Recently I bought what I initially thought was a beautiful cupboard. After getting it home and in better light I realized what poor condition it was in. I was sick over it. The shop I bought it at was in a neighboring state so I didn't want to inconvenience my husband into taking it back (and I didn't think the store would accept the return). So I rolled up my sleeves and spent countless hours trying to restore it without sacrificing its charm. I had some success, but whenever I look at that cupboard, I no longer feel the joy that I did when I initially found it. I learned a costly lesson. I adore primitives, but I also value quality. I think it's important to really inspect what you are buying even when you're able to say "yes" to all of the questions. Thanks, Anne, for another great video😊

I think when you were talking about, 'do I need another one' and 'do I have a place to store the excess?', that I have learned so much by watching the videos where collectors use multiples in display, and learn the art of layering. Take bowls for example....you mentioned you only have so many tables (as do I) but because I like various looks the requires different size bowls and trenchers etc, I now look for creative ways to layer the excess. I will stand a large dough bowl in a corner behind a chair for instance, use a flat bowl as a backdrop, or stack bowls on any level surface...you can put them on top of cabinets and on and on it goes...so if you can perfect the art of layering, you can still keep your pieces out on display, even when you change your look. Of course I also believe there is a stopping point 😀 And I do always make sure there will be a place for what I'm purchasing. Your consolation prize point was interesting....I sort of find myself settling for something less because I can't find what I REALLY want. One question I ask myself, if I ever upgrade, will I get my money back on this piece....I try not to settle. As far as regrets....my style changed over time and I wish I had chosen the primitive style in the first place, then I would not have the job of selling my other things etc, but honestly I think I regret more things that I don't buy, then things I buy....and I regret selling many things I've sold.

@@DeannaMoyers that’s very interesting that you regrets things you’ve gotten rid of… people usually say you never regret things that are gone but I’ve regretted a few things that I parted with too. Yes layering works… I have my trenchers layered but yet eventually one has to stop .:)

Purchased a high back sofa with a lover's knot fabric, black and tan...hated it from the moment it crossed the threshold of the front door. I've always had solid fabric sofas, but decided to try something different, go outside of my box and throw caution to the wind...well, I lived with that very expensive sofa five years and three months..replaced it with a Camelback sofa, solid color..but, with buffalo check throw pillows that match the new fireside chair..Now, I'm at peace and my home is once again calm..lesson learned, even at this age...😉. Hi Anne! My worst purchase that I have made is my sofa. It is something that I find myself purchasing other things to appease myself because I can't stand my sofa. And that is what I think I have to do is stop buying other things trying to make the sofa fit and be okay when I don't like it. I think that's what we do is when we purchase something that we're really not happy with, and then we find ourselves purchasing other things to make up for what we really didn't get that we really wanted. That might have been more money in the long run it's more worth spending the money when something you really want then to purchase something that is just okay.

I am really careful and give great thought about buying a larger item if I am not 100% sure about it. If that is the case I always consider if I don’t love it once I get it home, can I easily resell it and get my investment back. I have made a couple of mistakes with buying yellow ware bowls and also wooden measures when I’ve been at garage or estate sales and the prices are too good to resist. Then I’ve gotten home and realized I already have the exact ones already 🤷‍♀️. Great video Anne!!

    Very interesting!
    Thanks.
My theory is, if you get a bunch of things you really like, then when you get enough cool stuff, it will look great when you put it altogether. That is what has worked for me. If you get a basic black vase, then it will go with a lot of seasonal vignettes. If you get something yellow, then you may be able to add it to a June vignette with blue. You can add yellow into a fall vignette with orange, brown and red. And of course add it to a March vignette with green.
Even an ugly old owl can look good on a stack of books for Back to School in September.
And also in October with the branch and full moon. But I think I will stick to pictures of owls - I haven't seen one I want to buy! If I bought one, I think I would regret it.
