    Excellent tips thanks so much since I moved to Oklahoma I’ve had a hard time doing collards we live in a very wooded area so we get about six hours of sun a day, so I’ll try some of your tips see what happens

    Hi Cortney! Your video is really helpful! I came across some seedlings at my local nursery (zone 9b) when is the best time to transplant them for the spring? I’m a beginner and want to make sure I plant them during the right time! I’ll also plan on growing them in September/October to experiment based off your tips 🥰

    That was a great video. Straight to the point and perfect for me trying them the first time here in Englewood, FL (10A). I will wait till the end of July and direct sow in my raised bed. Got lots of cow peas growing and they love this heat. Thanks!

      Thank you so much Paul. Good luck with your collards. August - September may be a better time to start. Right before the weather starts to cool down. It may still be too hot in July in zone 10A. Collards don't enjoy the heat.

      Also, can you share a simple recipe for them that you use at home? I have never made them but get them every chance I can when out. Leroy's Southern Kitchen in Punta Gorda makes the best I ever had.

    I live in Miami, Florida, and I would like to see how to fertilize my Collard Greens and what brand I should use.

      May is the absolute worst time to start Collards here in S Florida. It's just way too hot! 🥵 I start mine in the cooler months. Fish emulsion is the best. I also use bonemeal and bloodmeal.

      You're welcome. It'll be a while before harvest. Let them grow around 2 to 3 months so that they are a good size. Good luck with everything.

      I’m in 8B and haven’t planted them yet…the agricultural extension says I still have time. It’s just gotten too hot here in Central Texas to plant anything for spring/ summer, so I’m definitely going for fall and winter. I’ve never planted collards, spinach or even lettuce, but I’m hoping! This is an excellent video. I’m covered everything I needed to hear.

    I like winter sewing my collards ( plant them in a milk jug and put it outside in winter) by spring the jug act like a green house, all I have to do is replant them , works great

      @@vmitchell1158 I cut the milk jug in half , at the bottom part of The jug I put holes , then I filled the bottom part of the jug with planting soil , planted the seeds , the duct tape the jug back together , left the lid off The jug , label the jug and set it outside in dead winter 🥶 buy spring everything sprouted and I just replanted it in the garden , works perfect , the easiest way to sprout seeds

      @@CortneysLittleGarden I have some collards, but don't seem like they are growing that much, I also have cucumbers the veins are growing long, but no product, not sure of the time line it takes to produce them, they are also still in pots, I am considering a raised bed

      @@MsShane1977 Collards don't respond well in this heat. I plan on starting my collards next month. The cucumbers definitely need more space. Their roots spread out. The growth may be stunted in a pot.

      Absolutely. I use mushroom compost, it's a little pricey and not that easy to find in my area. I mix it with my homemade compost and fertilize every 2 weeks or so. Thank you for watching!

    I was wondering if "collards" are similar to growing swiss chard?
    I'm growing aquaponic and my swiss chard is growing like wildfire.

      Nice! They both grow well in cooler temps but I wouldn't say they are similar in growth patterns. Collards grow super tall and the leaves can be HUGE, depending on the variety. Swiss Chard is a cut and come again crop but won't grow that long stalk that collards do.

    How often do you water? I tried growing Georgia collards and I'? In zone 9a and they just kept turning brown

      Yea. Unfortunately I had these in the sunniest part of my garden so I was watering twice a day. They don't do well in extreme heat. You will have to water often. Especially if they get full sun.

      Yes. It gets really windy in my backyard. I put them there to keep the collards from snapping.

      I've tried seeds from almost everywhere. Home Depot, Lowe's, even my local nurseries. It all depends on what works for you. MIGardener.com also has seeds that are reasonably priced with almost 100% germination rate.

      According to the Old Farmers Almanac, you should have started them since September. Your next chance will be in February.
