    In real life he was famously very tight with his money. My favourite story is him slipping something into the top pocket of a taxi driver and saying "have a drink on me". Obviously assuming it was a generous tip when he looked later it was a tea bag. 😅

    They always spent lavishly on the sets - there were some 14 actors in that roulette sketch, together with 2 chandeliers. All for a sketch where Tommy only says one line.

    The Enligh/German sketch was ridiculous and funny. It's not as off the wall as, say, Spike Milligan but Tommy was a class on his own. Love it.

    When Tommy visited Egypt he went through a bizarre in Cairo and saw a stall selling hats.
    He approached the vendor and picked up a Fez to put on.
    When he put it on his head, the vendor asked "You English?" Tommy replied "yes" and the vendor pushed his arms forward and said "just like that".
    When asked why he did this he replied "every time an Englishman puts on a Fez, he makes the same gesture and says "just like that" (in a Tommy Cooper voice).
    Tommy was the only Englishman he'd met who didn't do a Tommy Cooper impression when trying on a fez.

      The Two Ronnies did two: 'The Picnic' and 'By The Sea' - both are on TH-cam.
      Mr Barker also starred the the classic "Futtock's End", but that's not available - probably because it is about to be released on DVD and Blu Ray

    You should check out another comedian called Les Dawson. He's a lot like Tommy. He is more of a stand up. But he also tells absurd jokes and gets huge laughs from things going wrong, like his piano playing.
    It takes great skill to get up on stage, tell jokes, and do magic tricks. But to do them so incorrectly and get a bigger laugh takes a genius.

    Never try to understand the humour of Tommy Cooper. That will send you down the wrong road right away. As the last poster said, he could use weak material and have you laughing, and sometimes you don't know why. It's a fact that as as he walked onto stage, the audience laughed without him doing anything. One of the Kings of Clowns.

    She Who Must Be Obeyed - was coined by John Mortimer, as used by his brilliant creation Horace Rumpole, defence barrister - which you might like to dip in - not necessarily for reaction material!

    • @dVb9
      @dVb9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Except that he borrowed it, for comic effect, from Sir Henry Rider Haggard's magnum opus, written almost a century previously.

    Hey Squirrel, not a Tommy Cooper comment, more of a recommendation, as you are a Dad, check out Horrible History's these were originally books but the BBC made them into a children's sketch show. They are factually correct, but very funny and entertaining full of songs and they also adapted tv shows like wife swap and master chef. Why not try some out on your youngsters, laugh and learn the best way of retaining information.
