@@LittleWicketRailway The Hornby super detail class 08 (R2590) is a lovely model. I picked mine up second hand from a well known auction site. I also have a Hornby Class 09 with the same detail, again picked up at a good price from the same site. The big retailers also have them come up second hand on occasion as well.
Seems this is a nice way to get started with DCC, however it would have been nicer if hornby included two more wagons and second set of points so you could do some more shunting
Hi Redback 👋 hope that you get the frog stall problem sorted. Sometimes the plastic frog can lift the wheels slightly as they pass over it or it could be that the pick ups aren't making contact on all the wheels.
I realised after watching it back that it was also slightly broken, the ladder doesn't fit properly and it's pushing up the bright orange plastic thing on top. I don't like being negative, but it was a 👎 from me even befeore I spotted that.
My understanding is HORNBY wont be producing anymore DCC railway sets. I purchased THE MAJESTIC 2 years ago, which is still unpacked. It comes with the ILINK controller. The MIXED TRAFFIC and the MAJESTIC seem to be the last of the DUAL SETS. The impression I am getting is the ILINK is being phased out.. Would like to hear your thoughts on the future of DCC sets and ILINK. I enjoy your Video.
Hi Rusty Kilt! DCC is here to stay so Hornby need to embrace it with their future trains sets by at the very least including DCC ready models and I think that's what they're doing at the moment. You're right that the ILINK seems to be being phased out. I think bluetooth control from a phone app is where Hornby should focus for future sets and you'll see this on some of their releases in 2021. Check out uk.hornby.com/products/hm6000-app-based-analogue-control-r7292
I had one of these a while back, for about two weeks, which is as long as one of the locomotives lasted before the decoder let its magic smoke escape. "meah" that sort of thing happens but it went back anyway. It would have been a lot better with all the rolling stock being even remotely related to each other, and to be honest that Cl08 should be retired as its horrible. Two GWR tank engines and suitable stock would have been fine, or both more modern
Hi all, I'm a young adult mid 20s and just looking to get back into this, have a flying scotsman set from something like 2004 or something like that and I think maybe another engine, plus trucks ect, I know roughly what I want to buy and have everything I'm looking for in bidding wars atm bar a couple of newer sets I was thinking of getting both the traffic sets as the other traffic set is a fair price now however I was keen on this set but the only place I can find it it's £250 brand new, I don't mind paying that but my speciality is comic books not hornby so while I have an eye for quality in terms of used unused Im not a good judge of full sets, it all comes down to the trains for me as track is everywhere to buy so I was wondering how highly people rate this set as a whole but also personally rate both the pannier and the 08 looks wise I'm sold but a few people have noted issues with both engines in terms of stalling any feedback on the set would be appreciated 😎
Hi MachineMan 👋 I started with the Tornado Express set, but if I were to go back and start again I don't think I would buy a set. I think I would buy Peco track separately and then buy new locos/rolling stock that had already been out for a while and were coming up in the sales. New models sometimes aren't much more expensive than secondhand if you shop around. I'd probably go for Bachmann over Hornby. Maybe more expensive models, but overall better quality in my opinion and I'd rather save up for more detailed models and have fewer of them. I now know I like digital control, so I'd stick with DCC++EX with JMRI as my controller and only buy digital ready or fitted locos. It depends on what you want really and you'll have fun figuring that out.
@@LittleWicketRailway thank you, between your videos and Sam's trains I've definitely decided I wanna try the dcc, especially as you have both demonstrated how simple it actually is to use (I thought coding would be a big thing with the digital) the 08 in general Is a must have for any collection I think so I have managed to sniff out 3 dcc 08s on ebay, two pre owned (one has been made dcc ready I believe) and another is supposedly new, I'm not crazy enough to grab them all at once but my hope is I'll snag one for sure just wasn't sure in terms of grabbing a couple of the dcc controllers within a couple of sets would have been a good way to grab a couple of engines and enough gear to make my own track that wasn't like the suggested design as I still have the more or less full suggest layout hornby give (my grandad made it for me back in 04 with the flying Scotsmen and expansion packs) I know both you and Sam did critique the simple 08 in your reviews but the pannier looked very good my original plan was to grab a few older train models along with two sets but if you reckon mixing isn't such a good idea I can easily change that plan.
@@MachineMan-on4ul agreed a class 08 fits almost every layout. The one in the set isn't the best, there are more detailed models out there. The GWR pannier is better. You only need one DCC controller. The Hornby select is fine for basic control, but it has limitations, you won't be able to do more complex programming or control some DCC accessories. Some older locos have stood the test of time, but technology (DCC control, lighting, sound, motors, stay alives, decoder fitting, etc.) has advanced so much recently that most have been left behind. If you're going digital then it's worth investing in good decoders. The original Hornby 8 pin decoders are over priced and lacking in features (can't comment on their newer decoders). There are decoders for a similar price with loads more features, e.g. train-o-matic and ae decoders
@@LittleWicketRailway thank you very much, I've genuinely taken on board what you have had to say and before reading this comment I went back over things that have caught my eye, while no expert in this my knowledge in comics gives me a keen eye for detail and a few of the class 08s I liked the look of are not the same as the dcc ready ones, there was a train pack 08 that looked like the one in this set and I see exactly what you mean now regarding detail, especially compared to the "dick hardy" thank you very much for getting back to me so quick the way I'm working out the "budgeting" now I'm not really missing out with what I'm prioritising with now and I may actually have some money over now to put to a couple of sheds that I was maybe gonna wait on for a bit
This was the set that got me back into model railways. I have moved onto more detailed locos, but this set definitely started my love of digital.
Got any recommendations for the more detailed end of things? I'm trying to find the right balance between price and detail at the moment.

Great review I love the wagons!👍😀

This set is also my first foray into digital. Happy so far, other than both locomotives stall on insulfrog points. Trying to overcome that

That pannier ain’t bad for a train set!
Nice review. I totally agree about that tanker looking toy-like.

@@LittleWicketRailway Always appreciate the time you take to respond to questions... great work.
I really think they would be stupid of Hornby not to be pushing it.
Nice review, although doesn't appear to be on sale now. Hornby seem to have moves away from dcc sets.
My first digital set and I picked it up for $30AUD minus the green loco.
That's a fantastic bargain!
@@LittleWicketRailway ok on getting home and inspecting it the controller is a new style DC type. Bummer but still a great score.
Hi Rob im sorry about asking about the 08 i didn't see this video can i ask can you review the dapol class 68?
Why dont Hornby do these digital train sets anymore? :(
They seem to have focused on the new HM6000 with the phone app recently.
Is there a way to purchase this set? Because when i tried to find it on amazon or hornby is it off sale?
It doesn't look like this is being sold currently unfortunately 😕

Yeah, very odd mix of stock.
the two locos don't look right beside each other.

Yes. This set comes with a DCC controller and both locomotives are pre-fitted with decoders (DCC fitted).

Double train set
Fair review,a bit expensive
Yeah, not a cheap set, but you get a fair bit.
I think you get a fair amount for your money though compared to some.
