On the southeast coast of Poros, swimming on the windless shore is combined with a visit to an important attraction of the island. A perennial favorite, Poros retains its island charm in all seasons, thanks to its easy access by liner or speedboat from Piraeus, or even by road reaching Galata and crossing over to the picturesque Sphaeria via ferry boat or a traditional boat - taxi. After enjoying your walk in the picturesque Chora, it is worth devoting some of your time to getting to know the other interesting attractions of the island and of course for a swim in the clear blue waters of its organized beaches. On the southeast coast of Poros, right after cosmopolitan Askeli with its large beach and multitude of restaurants and accommodations, the road leads you to a small, peaceful beach that takes its name from the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi. It is one of the most important historical and religious monuments of the island, in operation since 1720. Built at a distance of only 4 km. from Chora and overlooking from the slope the picturesque creek below, this monastery is an excellent example of monastic architecture and a peaceful retreat in the rich nature that surrounds it. It was built on the site of an older monastery, probably from the 14th century. A century later, fighters of 1821 made the Monastery a place of their secret meetings, organizing the sea fight from there. That is why even today in its surroundings the visitor can see the graves of the sailors of the Revolution, Manolis Tombazis from Hydra and Nikolis Apostolis from Psara. A few years later, Ioannis Kapodistrias housed here the first Ecclesiastical School of Greece, with the start of classes officially starting on October 30, 1830 with 15 students and the teaching program including Greek language, Sacred Catechism, History and Carpentry. Before leaving behind the high walls of the Monastery, enjoy the magnificent view of the green hillside and let your gaze wander to the deep blue waters of Monastiri beach, which is often an anchorage for impressive boats. It is now time for a refreshing swim and relaxation at the small and picturesque beach you have been looking down on. With most of it covered by colorful umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds that can be reserved, with a well-organized beach bar-canteen offering cool drinks, cocktails and hearty snacks and with showers available for everyone, all you have to do is is to enjoy swimming in crystal clear water and the wonderful view that reaches the Peloponnese coast, the Lemon Forest of Galata and the small island of Bourtzi.
