Studio-wise, Blind Guardian is Queen + Iron Maiden. They do a lot of layering of vocal and guitar melodies like what Queen did, with the galloping metal like what Iron Maiden does. Plus they are somewhat unique in that they normally don't do a standard verse/chorus/verse/chorus/guitar solo style song. Lead guitarist Andre Olbrich plays lyrical guitar solos throughout the song, even while the singer is singing. You don't see many bands do that. Live, they can't replicate all the layering, but their stripped down sound is much heavier, and the band is super-tight, just excellent and well prepared musicianship.
Yeah, they've always been considered the "Queen of power metal" (as well as basically its innovators). Even "A Night at the Opera" is a reference to Queen's album of the same name. And yes, they're definitely worth checking out live. They never have an overly huge stage-show going on, but just the quality of performance and the amazing crowds, no matter how big or small, make them one of the greatest live bands. Though, Hansi's voice in live is starting to catch up with his age in recent years, so it's probably best to check out live stuff from, say, 10-15 years ago. He's still good, though, but he used to be arguably the best vocalist in metal. 1994-2004 he basically used to sound exactly like he did on the albums, minus the layering.
all what you said are the reason why blind guardian brought me into metal, was the first band i heared from that genre and i stuck to it, in the age of 12 haha
The beauty of this song is it's subject. Not the war of troy.... But the VISION Cassandra had of it. Apollo spat in the mouth of the Pithy Cassandra so noone would ever believe her again. I love how this Band is able to give you a feeling of Claasic (Bach and Bethoven) Prog-Rock (Queen and Pink Floyd) and combining this with fairy tales and Fantasy. Andre Olbrich supports with his melodic play the voice of one of the best Rock-Singers in the WOrld: Hansi Kürsch. Bass and drums take care of a fast and sometimes furious Rythm. On their Last Tour the Band played with a 90 head Symphinic Orchestra and a 80 head Choir. Worth to hear are the whole *Imaginations from the other side*; *Nightfall in middle earth* and *Beyond The Red Mirror* album. As single songs you may listen to *The Bards Song-in the Forrest* and *Valhalla* both from the Imaginations through the looking glas DVD. Their all worth to hear and show a lot of diversity (not all the same Stuff....Blind Guardian is a little bit like Queen [They did *Spread Your Wings* too^^] every song is another style but you allways hear: its the Guardians. Long Talk, short sense from me: Thank you for this reaction.
@Vin- I love that ending part too. There's another layer to the lyrics that holds a deeper lesson. An important part of this song is that it's meant to be a vision experienced by the Cassandra, who was a slave in Troy. She was a prophet who could unerringly see the future, but she was cursed so that no one would ever believe her. At the the end, where everyone is dancing, Cassandra sees what's about to happen, but no one wants to listen. That, of course, is followed by: "Father, your handsome son is returning home." (Hector tells Priam that Paris is returning from Greece, but no one realizes yet that he's taken Helen.) "Still the wind blows, calm and silent, carries news from a distant shore." (Cassandra foresees that her vision was real. The Greek ships are coming. But no one listens to her.) "Can't get it out of my head... Sorrow and Defeat. "
I don't know your fascination of start listening a power metal band by their longest songs 🤷♂️. Anyway, one of my favorite bands. Very Queen-esque style. NEXT power metal epic: Keeper of the Seven Keys from Helloween. Try some Tiamat too. You won't regret
Yeah, BLIND GUARDIAN! The storytelling aspect of their songs is usually through the roof, supported by some unique badass instrumentation. They are not called the Bards for nothing, for sure. :) That said, I agree long songs are the ultimate test of composers chops and listeners' patience. Remember, Vin and Sori were kinda put off when they jumped into SYMPHONY X and landed on "The Divine Wings of Tragedy". Here also, something like "Mirror Mirror" or "Valhalla" (ESPECIALLY Live) could have made a perfect introduction. But the fans like to try their favorite reactors on the more heady stuff. :) Myself, upon the first listen, "And Then There Was Silence" came at the weary end of the band's most overproduced album, and those vocal acrobatics were so different and seemed not to work, I thought, boy you are in for a ride. It seemed (and is) truly congested music, progressive in the original sense, but then - the ride became cosmic, with everything falling into place, the musical motifs started connecting, the Hansi - choir dialogue was dynamic, and by the time chorus hit, I was reconsidering the whole album - from "meh" to "actually great". For one, the three-storey chorus that starts with "misty tales and poems lost..." is probably the most expansive and engaging thing of its sort - every time you think now THIS is it, turns out what you heard was just a bridge to a greater height, and it keeps building! So sure, brave start with one of the most complicated GUARDIAN songs ever. ;) But I hope you inquisitive couple got intrigued enough to return for more quests! Cheers, Big G
Also - Patroclus (sp?) isn't the brother of Achilles (at least, not by blood, I think he is mentioned as a Sword Brother? but it's been a while) - basically Patroclus was the best-bud of Achilles. After Agermemnon stole Brieses for his prize (after having to return his prize to the Priest of Apollo), Achilles told Agememnon that he would not fight, not until the forces of Troy burned his ships. The gods aided the forces of Troy, breaching the Greek camp and setting fire to a good number of ships, but Achilles in embittered by his Anger, would not fight as they had not reached *His* ships, seeing the Greek host being slaughtered however, he let Patroclus take his Armour, to rally the Greek host - but warned him, not to pursue the fight passed the Greek lines. Patroclus managed to rally the Greeks, driving them back, almost to the gates of Troy, but the Gods interfered, causing Achilles Helmet (which was worn by Patroclus) to fall off, the Trojans seeing it wasn't Achilles, counter-attacked and Hector killed Patroclus.
Edit, it's not the Brother: The Trojan war was started because Paris (the prince of Troy) fell in love Menelaus' Wife (Helen of the Fair Cheeks) who was promised to him by Aphrodite after he awarded discord's Golden Apple 'To the Fairest' (against Hera and Athena). Menelaus was the brother of Agamemnon, the high king of the Greeks.
Oh wow, this is great. This track, and The Odyssey by Symphony X are two of my favorite metal songs. I'm not a huge metalhead, but I can't get enough of these two tracks. So damn epic. And obviously, as you can tell by the name of the second track, it basically goes perfectly being played right after And Then There Was Silence since it's about the Trojan War. Then you get the epic(way longer) Odyssey which is basically like a symphonic work mixed with Metal. Glad this one finally came onto your radar. It's an awesome experience.
That was an amazing song, I love "The Odyssey" and "Illiad". Paris not only slept with Helena with took her away with him, so Agamenon want her back. You need to do more Blind Guardian songs, most of them are about J.R.R Tolkien world, especially the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, check out "The Bard's Song" (live version) or the whole Nightfall In The Middle Earth, an concept album about "The Sirmarillion" (it goes from Quenta Sirmarillion to Nirnaeth Arnoediad), that record is fantastic.
This is one of the best songs in the history of human kind goddamnit. It's just a lot for people who are not used to this kind of music. It's super long, dramatic, lots of sound layers, it's just too much, even I admit it, but that's also what makes it so great. Not sure why you decided to go for this behemoth of a song instead of something like Mirror Mirror which I have seen requested millions of times!!
I am really happy for 100 thousand subs! You guys made me reanalize some lyrics of songs that I have heard for a million times :) Nice job! Keep on rocking in the free world and stay dark!

This song production is very complex with tones of layers and layers of vocals and music. It can be overwhelming at first listen. Much of it has to do with the production. You should check out the live version. it's much more striped down and IMHO is much better than the studio version. Honestly, Blind Guardian are a live band. They kick ass live. Very fun live band. The singer, Hansi Kursch, is one of my favorite singers in Metal. His voice is amazing! His earlier style has a more Dio quality to his singing. You need to react to "Valhalla" live from "Imaginations Through The Looking Glass". This live version is amazing! It really showcases how good of a live band Blind Guardian are and how passionate their fans are. If you do, it is very important to watch the entire video. Don't just stop it early because the music stopped. There is more.
Great, Blind Guardian! This is good music to accompagn pen & paper rpgs like Das Schwarze Auge (German, The Black Eye) and Dungeons & Dragons. Loved the sessions in my youth with that music. Greetings from Germany
Try Demons and Wizards Hansi Kursch the singer who also sings for Blind Guardian teamed up with long time friend Jon Schaefer of Iced Earth Down where I Am ( would be interested in what you think with Sori being pregnant. ) Fiddler on the Green
Okay, since our doing Blind Guardian, look up Another Holy War and look them up dong it live, particularly from this show done in Germany about a decade ago for a DVD. For one, Blind Guardian's recorded work isn't any where as good as they're live work, they are amazing live and that DVD (and the crowd) prove that. As for the song, it's actually about Jesus but not so much in a Christian way or even a pro or against way, it's just a metal song singing about him, what happened to him and the aftermath of the faith it built, that's it. Seriously, check it out.
Wrong song to start with this great band, come on. You want to know how great and well respected this band is go and watch "the bard's song" at the wacken festival, it was sung by the crowd, a very emotive moment in metal history. Theres so many songs from blind guardian easier to catch than this one, like "mordred's song" or "nightfall" for example. You should give a chance to those songs and believe me, you'd be surprise.
When it gets towards the end "roam in darkness," I always thought it was interesting how it could also be heard "Roman darkness"... alluding to how Aeneas was a refugee from Troy and was precursor to the Roman Empire... dunno of that makes sense but it always made sense to me lol.
When I first read the Illiad I liked it for the fighting but I was really young then. The second time I read it I started noticing the little things. The war was for nothing, brave and valorous people did great things and died like dogs. Today we tent to go one sided when creating war related art. Either "our side" is good and the other bad or the opposite. War itself is either glory or massacre of innocents. Surprisingly a 3000 year old book is more mature about the whole thing. The war was inevitable and not because of love, that never convinced anyone, not even the men fighting in the book. It even starts with Agamemnon taking one of Achilles' captive girls resulting in Achilles refusing to fight. It is just about pride. Homeric heroes do great things, they find glory in war however the tragedy and futility of the whole thing is equally important and Homer made sure that you knew that the dude that Achilles just killed so gloriously was a loving husband and father and he really liked his horses or something. There is a great video from lindybeige regarding the book. "The Iliad - what is it really about?" TL;DR Iliad is about respect and honor among enemies and the tragedy and greatness of war.
You guys have such an interesting underlying dynamic. I think a great high tier Patreon reward would be to subtitle what you're both actually thinking while you're speaking (and not speaking). Why does Sori want people to believe she doesn't know who Brad Pitt is?
I love this song, but the first time I heard it I thought it was all over the place. It definitely takes a few listens before it flows...but once is does it's glorious!
Iliad TLDR (as far as I remember): Paris of Troy fell in love with Menelaus's wife Helena of Sparta. Paris and Helena flew to Troy. Menelaus felt hurt and convinced his brother Agamemnon to bring a whole lot of greek clans to assault and siege Troy.Achilles was Spartas prime warrior and Hector was Troys prime warrior. So each side has chosen a warrior to fight on their behalf. That didn't brought justice so the spartans had the idea with the horse. With worked. Achilles was wounded (henced the Achilles heel). The creator of the Iliad (Homer) later also "composed" The Odyssey. Also a very famous story.
1st of all: Fucking Finally!!! 2nd of all: Thank you for reviewing my favorite band! 3rd of all: if you want more epic Blind Guardian songs try : "all of their songs" its a banger! Or go with "Sacred Worlds" (my favorite song and first song by them i heard)

And Two songs made for Computer-games: *Children of the Smith* from the Dwarfs and *Sacred World* an ingame Concert in Sacred II.
Wheel of Time by blind guardian is another good one
"Keeper..." Live in Wacken 2018!
Blind Guardian should aways be live, all of their song are designed to interact with the crowd too
Yeah, BLIND GUARDIAN! The storytelling aspect of their songs is usually through the roof, supported by some unique badass instrumentation. They are not called the Bards for nothing, for sure. :)
That said, I agree long songs are the ultimate test of composers chops and listeners' patience. :)
Myself, upon the first listen, "And Then There Was Silence" came at the weary end of the band's most overproduced album, and those vocal acrobatics were so different and seemed not to work, I thought, boy you are in for a ride.

The day will come!
Doom is coming!!!!
Man every video within 15 minutes..
Dudes gonna die of intense orgasm when that day comes
Respect for your perseverance!
Blind Guardian has arouse some deep thoughts: myths, passion, wrath, jealousy, self sabotage, unconscious drives... This reaction got philosophic. Loved it!
The Piper Never Dies - Edguy
I am really happy for 100 thousand subs! You guys made me reanalize some lyrics of songs that I have heard for a million times :) Nice job! Keep on rocking in the free world and stay dark!
In Germany they're called THE BLIND CURTAINS ... that's because GUARDIANS just sounds similar to the German word for curtains: Gardinen. So they got dubbed (by the german Metal Magazine Rock Hard I believe) BLINDE GARDINEN 😂😂😂
I will say it again, Hansi Kursch could record himself singing a phone book and I would buy it.
Yay!! BLIND GUARDIAN!!!
Waited a long time for you guys to do some Blind Guardian
That’s incredible you’re almost at 🔥100,000🔥 Love y’all!
Holy shit, guys. Almost 100k. You've come a long way. Grats.
Still waiting for that Nergal interview.
Be'lakor - The smoke of many fires.
They have a pretty good lyric video for that song.
Amazing band
This is the best metal song for me. No competition. It has always been and will always be.
blind guardian mirror mirror liveeeee
no
The Blind Guardian is here already :o
Manowar - Achilles, Agony And Ecstasy In Eight Parts
I would love any reaction channel to do this one. Not sure what Manowar are like for copyright tho.
Yeah they are a great band but Joey DeMaio is kind of a douche with copyrights and running a business.
I enjoy this song so much that I've memorized the lyrics to almost the entire thing. Only way this is happening is through patreon since its 28 minutes...
Amen to that!
Good song, but making them listen for half an hour is a bit much. I'd prefer Bridge of Death. Seems a fitting song for Christians to react to.
Morbid Angel - God of Emptiness
@Malcolm Reynolds Altars is great too! Recorded the same time, at the same studio, using the same kit, same drummer, as on Terrorizer - World Downfall
All first 5 studio albums... Altars is beautiful raw, Formulas is so dark and Sumerian/Lovecraft oriented... Blessed is great balance between first album and l8r Covenant... Morbid Angel is probably in top 3 Death Metal bands ever...
@@matijagloncak5382 Formulas fucking rules!! Although Rutan was on Gateways, right? But Formulas still has Tucker. Killer album! Love Invocation from it, but a lot of other cool songs. One of the albums you listen to in full
Hi guys the best power metal band IMO, great song but you have to do Valhalla, Mirror Mirror, Time Stands Still at the Iron Hill all LIVE it will change your life
Blind Guardian "battlefields" is my personal favourite 🤘🤘
Black Fast-I conspire
Spiritbox-the mara effect pt2 (or belcarra)
Primordial-nail their tongues
Architects-a match made in heaven, naysayer or these colours don't run
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
It’s the musical equivalent of eating at one of those medieval re-enactment restaurants
u need to watch Live Videos! The crowd is always insane, singing everything.
Try Demons and Wizards
Hansi Kursch the singer who also sings for Blind Guardian teamed up with long time friend Jon Schaefer of Iced Earth
Down where I Am ( would be interested in what you think with Sori being pregnant. )
Fiddler on the Green
Misfits - Astro Zombies
MACHINE HEAD - HALO (full version)
*Or MACHINE HEAD : Descend The Shades Of Night / Imperium*
Okay, since our doing Blind Guardian, look up Another Holy War and look them up dong it live, particularly from this show done in Germany about a decade ago for a DVD. For one, Blind Guardian's recorded work isn't any where as good as they're live work, they are amazing live and that DVD (and the crowd) prove that. As for the song, it's actually about Jesus but not so much in a Christian way or even a pro or against way, it's just a metal song singing about him, what happened to him and the aftermath of the faith it built, that's it. Seriously, check it out.
Make a mark at the 9th of November: a new Blind Guardian Studio Album will be released....the first after 5 Years
Also they have found the city of Troy so parts of the story could be true
I am really pleasantly and completely surprised with this song choice. Bling Guardian is awesome and this is a masterpiece. well done!
Well I am glad I have something to look forward to this morning
Wrong song to start with this great band, come on.
You want to know how great and well respected this band is go and watch "the bard's song" at the wacken festival, it was sung by the crowd, a very emotive moment in metal history.
Theres so many songs from blind guardian easier to catch than this one, like "mordred's song" or "nightfall" for example. You should give a chance to those songs and believe me, you'd be surprise.
Jesus Guerra ita better the imaginaton thorugh the looking glass live version of the bards song
Yeah, you're completely right about it.
When it gets towards the end "roam in darkness," I always thought it was interesting how it could also be heard "Roman darkness"... alluding to how Aeneas was a refugee from Troy and was precursor to the Roman Empire... dunno of that makes sense but it always made sense to me lol.
Congrats on the 100k! And holy moly, the longest BG magnum opus, tiring, bombastic song. What a choice. :D
Congrats on a 100k you craaaaaaaaaazy people!!!! Much love. (p.s. check some Entombed Left Hand Path , or Dismember Dreaming In Red on your free time)
Haggard- Eppur si Muove, Per Aspera Ad Astra, Awakening the Centuries
Congrats on 100K! Y’all earned it. Keep it up! Keep it heavy 🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽🔥
"The Iliad - what is it really about?"
TL;DR Iliad is about respect and honor among enemies and the tragedy and greatness of war.
Great song, but u should have done the live version from looking glass! The real greatness of the song became clear right there!
Dream Theater- Stream of Consciousness live @ Budokan video
This song is from their "A night at the opera" album, so kinda thematic with all its bombastic stuff.
Arch Enemy - We Will Rise + Fields of Desolation (LIVE Tyrants of the Rising Sun 2008)
CONGRATULATIONS ON 100 000.!!!
amazing that you guys did this one!!!!!!!!
THE live song to do by them is Valhalla. The crowd is so into it esp. at the end
Iliad TLDR (as far as I remember):
Paris of Troy fell in love with Menelaus's wife Helena of Sparta.
It's about damn time. Love Blind Guardian!
The runner up from our poll, yay! 😉
Edguy - The Piper Never Dies
Opeth - Demon of the Fall!!
