How to Connect Slicers on EXCEL Dashboards with Multiple Charts/Tables/Graphs

  • If you generate a dashboard with slicers in EXCEL that has multiple products (charts, tables, graphs) you must connect each product to each slicer in order for the slicers to filter the data in all the products together.
    Just right click on each slicer and look under "Report Connections". It's almost self-explanatory what you need to do. If a box is unchecked that means the slicer is not connected to that product. If you want it to be connected, just check the box. Or, if for some reason you prefer to have slicers only interacting with certain products on your dashboard you can manually disable those connections.

    Thanks, this helped me out with getting started on slicers for a dash I'm putting together in Excel.

      Glad it worked out.
      Every time (and I do mean EVERY time) I demo a simple dashboard to colleagues they are stunned and amazed. "This is what our team has been looking for for years!" And it took me only10 minutes to do it. And they could learn to do it themselves without much trouble.
      Merely inserting slicers is a quantum leap forward for most. And that's just the tip of the iceberg in what you can do with EXCEL today.

    David, thank you for this information. I am an Excel veteran, self-taught. Working on a Mac with Excel 2016. Just very new to Slicers-first day. I am trying to create three different slicers all based on the same field in the source data called Month. One Slicer for Current Month, one for Trailing 3, one for YTD, and one for Trailing 12. Each of them would connect to their group of unique pivot tables. But what is happening when I do this is that the four slicers all end up showing the same selections within the slicer Dialog Box EVEN THOUGH they still only represent the choices originally selected. Very confusing. Any suggestions on how to have multiple slicers from the same source data field driving multiple Pivot Tables?

    Thank you David. I have been using slicers for a long time. However, quite often I find some slicers to lose report connections without my "disconnecting" them from the pivot table(s). I have repaired Excel files many times, not really know if they needed to be repaired, but just to see if that would help. I am using 2013 64 bit. I had the same issue with 2010. Any ideas as to why I would lose report connections? I can easily reconnect them, but i shouldn't have to do that. Thank you for reading and any advice.

    Thank you David. If I create a dashboard in Power Pivot and send it to a party that doesn't have Power Pivot installed, will the non-Power Pivot party be able to use my dashboard?

    • @DavidWettonExcelBI
      @DavidWettonExcelBI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basiaclly no. A Power Pivot product requires Power Pivot to work, but there are some points to consider.
      You can share PP products if they are posted on a Sharepoint site with a PP server. Those products will work for anyone, with or without EXCEL as those PP are just web apps in that case. Of course you need to have access to the properly configured server for this.
      The other (annoying) thing that you can run into is if both parties have PP, but one has 2010 and the other 2013. PowerPivot version are not compatible with each other. Nor can you change them from one to another.

    Is it possible to use slicers for pivot tables that are connected to different sources of data? For instance, I have one data source table that has claims information and I have another data table that has membership information. The claims data is more complex and has data that is not relevant to the member population (e.g. the type of claim, etc.) However, Both data tables have the same category fields that let you define the population (e.g. the region, line of business, etc.) Now, I have 2 pivot tables that reference each data source--one for claims and one for membership. I want to have one slicer that would let me filter the same population for both pivot tables, so that I could see the membership for that population in one pivot table and the types of claims for that population in another table. Is it possible to do this with slicers when the pivot tables have different sources? Even though both tables have many of the same fields, it does not seem that you can hook up slicers to both of them. It seems like you need to use the same data source for slicers, is this correct?

    Hi David. I'm trying to connect to my slicers to my table (connected from access), pivot table and charts and does not work. Is there a way to connect them? Like this video, where can filter your Table 1 and charts at the same time when you use your slicer

      I now recommend that you ALWAYS use Power Query when working with EXCEL. Even if it's just a single worksheet in a local file that I use for only my needs. If you are bringing in multiple data sources you have to connect them inside EXCEL in order for EXCEL to treat them as a unit. So Power Query is used for the ETL (and it has so many additional values I couldn't list here) and Power Pivot creates the relationships between the multiple source. You then build your dashboards etc. from that relational product.

      David Wetton i created all my queries in access because i have not used pivot query before. Thank you very much for your great tip.

      Are the tables and charts all coming from the same data source? I always work from one set of data and can generate multiple views (tables, charts, dashboards) on a single worksheet and the slicers can be connected to all those products. If you were using mutliple data (unrelated) sources I doubt EXCEL can make slicer connections. I've never tried this but I'm guessing you would need to first bring those separate sources together (in a relational Power Pivot model?) or append the data tables (in Power Query) if that can be logically done.
