Mr Allstar Who do you think compares? Tupac? Tupac has great content and storytelling (not to say that Em doesn't, but we talkin' lyricism), and he was no slouch when it came to lyrics, but he's just not on par with Eminem when it comes to wordplay.
The thing that's really different about Eminem is his double/triple entendres, having little/no filler, painting a vivid picture with not only each and every word, but every syllable. When Eminem's fully in his bag, this stuff just pours out of him effortlessly. He'll write stuff that flies over people's heads repeatedly, because they think it's "random", but put his lyrics under the microscope and you'll see a genius/savant at work. I wouldn't be surprised if he's functionally autistic, because a normal brain just doesn't cluster words like this.
Again, we're talkin' lyricism. That doesn't mean I think rappers like Schoolboy Q, Nas, Lil Wayne, Tech N9ne, etc aren't lyrically great - it's just that Eminem isn't a normal human being with this shit and is on another level. There's a reason hip hop heads that catch the bars, like Shaq, lose their minds when listening to some Eminem. Watch some of his reactions. "I can't even keep going - it's too much" is a common theme for a reason.
